The Frugal Sketcher
I have always loved to draw and sketch and it seems to me that a lot of people out there really don't have the time to do long-drawn-out paintings or going out to visit places to sketch.
So I thought it would be a fun idea to provide reference photographs that I took to use for black and white sketches.
I'm using photos from rural Ontario Canada.
I thought the sketches should take no longer than half an hour.
I have chosen to use inexpensive and easy to find black Sharpie markers .
I provide sketching videos in real time demonstrating how I approach back and white sketching.
From the videos provided you can take your time and go back to revisit the the video.
You can enjoy the sketching experience without any pressure.
I plan on uploading a free sketching video tutorials every two weeks.

Quit using sketchbooks
I always had problems with urban sketching and having the ink from the sketch bleeding through to the back of the paper.
With the bleed through of the ink the back of the paper is a waste and useless.
I have a fantastic solution for you?
Look at this.
A clipboard with a case
You can clip your sketch paper to a solid surface and happily sketch away.
Inside the attached case you can store any kind of paper you want.
Including , watercolor paper colored paper or just regular copy paper.
When you finish a sketch just put it in the case and protect it from damage and the weather.
The case also has a place for your pen and pencils.
Look at that, that's fantastic.
The clipboard case is my favorite urban sketching platform.
When I'm finished with the sketches I store them by month in a three ring binder.
Whenever I want to look for a sketch that I've done I just go to the month.
The clipboard case is a great solution to a lot of urban sketching problems.
I have three, one for the studio and one for each of my cars.
You can get clipboard cases very cheaply from Amazon.

I have always loved to sketch. The sketches are of old farmhouses and landscaper images in Ontario Canada. Sketching with markers is inexpensive and fun I have found that many subjects make better sketches than paintings. And just think, you won't need a lot of space to store your drawings. I have always loved to sketch. Enjoy a free black and white marker sketching tutorial. I nearly froze taking photos of Whiteman's Creek located near Burford at Apps Mill. i love this idea. clipboard case? i have clipboards. playing with idea of where to do pencil carry frugal, instead of buying.

Laptop stands aren't real cheap. It's a neat idea but I wouldn't call it "frugal."

Cool, I never saw such a thing 🙂 I use a self-made sketchbook with changeable pages and good paper. But I have to have at least DinA3 paper so that I can put my pages in because is wide instead of high.

Can you tell me what that roller thing is called please? I ask because here in the UK we don't have window screens, so such tools may also not be available here, but if I know what it's called, I could search for it online. Thank you.
It's a screen roller tool. I saw one called a screen mouse roller tool that looked neat because it was more ergonomic.

I absolutely adore your sketch! Making the first floor a lighter value was a great choice to draw your eye there. I also love how the shop and door are off to the right instead of central in the composition. Makes it feel more mysterious and interesting.

Been looking for a frugal way to protect y i pad
Where do I get the wheel tool from.I'm asking this because I live in Italy.
I. Got the wheel tool from a hardware store, The tool is used to put in a spline to hold a window screen to prevent bugs from getting into the house.
I ordered the template but I didn't see a layered template for the cards to sit on within the Box.
The edges of the sheet outside the spline boundary lift up. Is there anything to do to keep this from happing. They are flap-like and get in the way.

I don't understand how parchment paper can be used as the stay-wet palette since parchment paper is, by designed, covered with wax on both sides, rendering it waterproof. How would the moisture from the underlying spongy material permeate into the parchment paper(s) above to keep the paint wet? Don't understand.
Good morning Tim, Thankyou for your question. You are thinking of wax paper. Parchment paper isn't waxed.

Hi Arthur, Many thanks for your comment. The first graphic in the video gives you all the supplies and quantities needed to make the easel. Just pause the video and make a materials list from the graphic. You can ignore the audio or turn it down. You could also print a screen shot for the graphic in the video. I hope this is a help.
