    Hi . Thanks for the videos . So beneficials. I’ve been practicing the wrist vibrato for couple of months and the problem is that when I’m practicing a scale especially on 3rd or 4th position, and when I do the vibrato with 80 rpm ( 4 in each click ) so my violin is shaking , which affects my bow and it bounces ( just the middle part and the other part is tight ) . So is it because I do it too fast and should practice with lower speed ? Or is there another reason to this ? Again thanks a lot for a good channel

    Dr. Lee, one issue that I haven't been able to perform well is spiccato. I keep reading is about finding the "bounce". My bounce is too high. Too high, in my mind is too slow. I move closer to the frog and the bounce gets small, but even then my spiccato doesn't work. I know, practice it. But, is there any technique that I can practice to lead me to a spiccato? Pearlman has a very funny anecdote on learning spiccato, but it's just a funny story, nothing really helpful. Any ideas?

    one thing i always question why is: why music stands are so small in height? they never go as high as the ideal position for someone taller than 1,60m for example. i recommend all my pupils to practise with the music stand mounted in the top of a box or similar, like i do when i'm practising.

    • @violindoctor2
      @violindoctor2 Před 8 měsíci

      Absolutely. I run into this all the time. I think usually the folding/portable stands are the worst since they prioritize being compact - so most of them are quite short. Even some heavy black metal stands are too short, which doesn't make sense to me either. However, most people practice and perform while sitting, so I think this in combination with the company wanting to cut production costs might be why. Once I see the student is quite serious in their violin studies, and/or if posture continues to be a problem, I have my students upgrade to the manhasset standard black which has a "tall" version for my taller students. These will usually last a lifetime if properly taken care of. I advise the student to place a small wire stand up on a coffee table or such if there is no other solution, just as you mentioned. Thank you so much for raising this point. I do hope to discuss music stands more in a future video. Best, as always....

    I think I'm moving my left hand efficiently, but I always practice standing up and can feel my back tensing up.

    • @violindoctor2
      @violindoctor2 Před 8 měsíci

      Unfortunately, back muscles are definitely one of the first to experience fatigue and tension while playing the violin. You raise an important issue - thank you for that. If I can incorporate the topic into a future video, I certainly will. There are a few gentle stretches I have my students do with me during the lesson whenever they complain of pain or tension. If the pain is in the upper back, it is probably coming from a difference source than if it's the lower or mid back. I usually have all my students practice while standing the majority of the time, as it's the best way to understand balance and posture from the ground up. In addition, sitting tends to lend itself to slouching, especially in young ones. However, I think it's perfectly fine to practice while sitting sometimes, especially if one plays regularly in an orchestra or other setting where performing is done sitting. It's also good to give your legs and back a rest from standing for hours at a time as long as the sitting posture is correct.

    Merry Christmas to you. If you have others who are interested in a topic on intervals i wanted to express an interest in such a video. I have a method book by Nicholas Laoureux called A practical method for violin part one and two. He addresses the major keys and focuses early on intervals. Sam Applebaum also briefly mentions intervals in his method book. Is interval identification icing on the cake or does that come with practicing arpeggios to a degree. Too music theory oriented? Curious.

    • @violindoctor2

      David, thank you for prompting this great topic. I think intervals are an important facet of note reading and analysis on the violin, and it's definitely an approachable topic within Music Theory. I confess I tend to incorporate theory in violin lessons only as needed, but it's so helpful to know one's intervals. I think the easiest way to learn them without much effort is while practicing double stops (and arpeggios, as you mention). I will definitely incorporate this topic into videos coming soon. Laoureux's method is fascinating, but I think for a more sophisticated or mature player who enjoys a methodical, analytical, patient approach.
