I was so excited to binge this connect. Sad you've been away from the platform - but I definitely get it. Interests change, life gets in the way, and we all have shit happen that can change our day-to-day lives. No pressure at all - but I personally would LOVE more of these videos. I've been running my RTX 3070ti Founders Edition copper modded by myself 2 years now since this video released. I recently had to put more thermal paste on the chip because the GPU started to throttle, but after repasting, all is back to normal. Furthermore, I can even overclock it about 10%, and the only limit is the 100% GPU load on some games, and lack of more than 8GB memory. Truly an unstoppable card after that copper mod. Thanks again for the video! The only reason why they use thermal pads instead of this, is that an average user won't be able to know how to repaste it, maintain it, or will cause warranty issues.

My RTX 3080 memory never gets above 85c and it is an OEM Dell 3080 😂.

Buddy got an older gaming PC for $10 that had a Corsair closed liquid cooled system but had been empty for years and full of bacteria so he bought a new heatsink and fan but it wouldnt cover the entire CPU. Four corners were exposed even though it fit the board. So I too apart the copper plate from the Corsair liquid cool system and used that over the CPU then attached the the aluminum heatsink and fan to it and so far idle at 38C. I got to put an OS on it and stress test it.

Why would it change after only a month? its not like anything is moving on the PCB...

Ive been struggling to improve my razer blade 14 2021 rtx 3080 addition and i think i will do this and make a video for everyone struggling with their laptops. This is the best solution ive seen to heat probems.

My Gigabyte 3070ti GPU runs at around 57°..try not using a shit tower with shit cooling. Also, set your fan curve on MSI afterburner. If you're hitting temps that high your build is trash.

What about using copper sheets instead of shims? You can buy pure copper sheets as thin as 0.1mm, 0.2mm etc. These sheets are available as soft copper as well, which means they are slightly compressible. 1 benefit is that you can fill the exact size of the gap without increasing the height for the memory chips. The best way to measure the required thickness would be to stick some putty on the die, tighten the heat sink, then take it off and check the thickness of the squashed putty. Once you've got the exact thickness you got a piece of copper sheet with that exact thickness or a 0.1/0.2mm thicker copper sheet and stick in on the die with very little thermal paste. This should give you a perfect fit. Another option you could do is to tape of the area around the die and extend the copper shim/sheet, increasing the surface area of the copper sheet/shim that is in contact with the die, allowing for greater thermal distribution directly in the horizontal plane.

Jesus... you use extremle to much thermal paste. More != better.... You add it a little one. Then you smear it... rest will do PRESSURE, when you put radiator. MAIN reason when we need to add thermal paste. IS TO FILL GAP between 2 surface. And when put almost flat surface to another, you need only tiny amount of thermal paste. If you add to much, most all of it will flow over.

Living the tape on is a mistake, you just keep the heat on those areas and those components, will be under thermal continuous stress. I copper moded 2 cards 1060 6GB Zotac and HD 7950 3GB, with no damn tape, are still alive with better temps on VRAM. Is no way coppers shims can shortcut anything because they don't bend, not even at 100 C. Because is a clearance in between PCB contacts or parts, like resistors, and copper shims. The only problems on copper moding is the thickness of the copper shims, sometimes you have to sand down more than you want, so you better start with 180 grit and go with finer 400 and over after. If you stop on 400 grit use rougher paste like I 7 Diamond. If you don't get the right thickness on copper shims than the radiator contact is poor and you'll see it soon. Putty for me was worst than copper but, I didn't test too many brands of putty. The worst part is that manufacturers, most of them, now are coating radiators fins and pipes, contact plates with Nickel which got very bad thermal conductibility and convection compared with copper and tbh don't think are even use copper anymore, just saying they do. Those who don't coat them with Nickel are painting them, another crap idea! Copper moding is safe unless you use thermal paste with electric conductibility or blow copper residue on the PCB.

I don´t get why you always have to fight with high memory temps. My 4080 is all stock and only my Hot Spot is 90 degrees Celsius which seems normal.

You can easily achieve the same results using non conductive thermal Putty to cover more surface area. The problem here isnt the copper but because there a too much gap between contact points.

The second result is far better, you've managed to get the hotspot temp within 10c of the core temp.. this indicates a very good mount between the cards cooler and the die of the GPU.

Copper Mod can kill your gpu! ideal temps for vram is at most 10c higher than gpu core! the simplest inexpensive way is to buy some good heat transfer pads for vram 3070ti and if i can remember exactly the 3090's will run vram hotter than other cards

On an built like this, breaking warranty anyway. Why not nail polish all those components instead of tape them off. Also, just check if it would short so everything is flush as possible. Then nail polish all possible risk components. And tada, a invisible, permanent protection against shorts.

Once the MX4 dries out a bit more and gets more clay-like it glues shit together. I've yanked like 3 AM4 CPUs out of their socket trying to remove a cooler I used MX4 on a year or so prior.
