Yeah watch your tires on all that daybriii
I witnessed this crash live in person. I was 12 or 13 years old with my dad. I didn’t see the impact but my dad did and told me to look. When I looked up his legs were hanging out of the front of the car. I had a “spytech hidden camera” 35mm with me and snapped a few pictures of it. I will never forget that day.
song name?
Appears that at 0.25 speed that Stan Fox loses the back end after getting too close to someone side by side. Dirty air causes the crash because Fox actually fishtails below the apron and then does a classic road racing overcorrect, hitting the wall head-on like Smiley did. Had this accident been at full speed, it would've been fatal. Amazing he survived this... RIP
My first race live,, right in front of me
i had to go to my wedding reception following seeing this crash on t.v.......
I know it’s Indycar but Stan Fox’s near fates crash back at the Indianapolis 500.
I know it’s Indycar but
3:56 scott blayton........
I was there about 15 rows back just past the green flag. You could hear the muffled thumps, but it was scary just seeing it. My heart was pounding.
The way his legs were rag dolling and exposed was at the time, the most horrific thing I had seen as a 18 year old. The advancements all of motorsports have made since are leaps and bounds compared to pre 2000's.
Lucky to be alive. Had this been at full speed, he likely would have died. That probably kept his legs from being ripped off by the catch fence maybe and landing back on the track.
If the car didn't break like this he would have died. They built to disintigrate to dissipate the energy from the crash into the car and not the driver
I like how psychopath Bobby Unser’s main focus and concern is all the debris and worrying about other cars cutting down tires.
my thinking :D thanks for this comment
I seriously can’t understand how you see a guy laying lifeless with the entire front half of the safety cell missing and your first thought is "oh man, these other drivers better be careful! You wouldn’t want to cut a tire!"
I like to think he wasn’t trying to worry viewers. No matter how obvious it was.
I don't think it's misplaced concern... if the debris causes a tire to slowly lose it's integrity and then it blows out at 220mph you're going to have the risk of another driver in the medical center. Bobby is just thinking like a driver - which is why he's there.
I remember watching this live on our old school RCA console television with my Dad when I was 13. The image of the car at rest with Stan’s lifeless body exposed from his destroyed car has been seared into my brain. I was convinced that I had just witnessed death for the first time.
I was just coming to say the same thing (except I was 14 at the time). I've seen a lot of crashes in the 27 years since (some that actually were fatal) but I've never seen another wreck that was so memorable. I was convinced he was dead or at least had his legs totally destroyed.
Shame what happened to Stan Fox. After a career like that with those experiences only to be killed in a head on collision with a truck on a dirty back road in a silly, irrelevant country like NZ.
A silly irrelevant country? Not sure why ya gotta take a sentiment like, "insane that he survived a career in racing, including this crash only to die im a collision w a truck on a backroad.<PERIOD>"... Way to take that and make it a disparaging and borderling prejudicial comment.
@@HellfireHellesto agree
Thats sad i never knew that. Rest in peace Stan
Wikipedia: Fox was killed in a head-on collision on December 18, 2000 on the Desert Road some 200 miles (320 km) south of Auckland, New Zealand. Fox was driving through the night to attend a speedway meeting and collided head on with a northbound truck and trailer Unit.
Yeah i have to agree on that. I know little about New Zealand. But ut sounds like you know less. RIP Stan the man
Azóta is beleborzongok…
Wait a second… thats the Indy 500 thats Jacques Villenueve won???
Yes
Yes, the last one before the split.
And he was penalized 2 laps earlier in that race incorrectly since the pace car picked up the wrong leading carI believe.
You mean the year Scott Goodyear got screwed by the pace car not doing his job correctly? And Jacques taking out Jimmy Vasser with 20 to go with head games on the track at those speeds and then doing it again with Goodyear? Yeah my 11 year old self remembers that bullshit
@@Poundcakebowler Oh so from your point of view Scott was right passing the pace car before it entered the pit lane? How do you explain that he was the only driver making that mistake? I felt bad for him as I am pretty sure he would have win the race but the indy 500 is a race where even the tiniest mistake can ruined a race. On the other hand what Jacques did to get on the leading lap after his penalty is incrdeibile and that accomplisment shall be recognized.
Stan Fox was lucky to survive this F1 crash.
Lol
You kinda confuse the two categories here mate
Could be a troll.
F1 huh??.
F1?
His crash kind of looks like a cartoon where their feet sticks out and only hold onto the steering wheel
He survives this recovers from a major head injury then dies in a traffic accident.
Sorta like Alex Zanardi. Loses his legs. Now he's fighting for his life.
Unlucky
@@mvd4436 He nearly died after the Indy Car crash. Lost over half his blood because of the broken legs.
@@mvd4436 What?

those times, indi race wa a lot more emoptioned. but a lot more dangeorus..
It's still plenty dangerous now, especially on the Ovals.
I thought one of his legs got cut off like Alex zenardi in 2001
Man Zanardi’s was a terrible wreck. Just seeing the pictures of what was left of his legs just exploding.

he was not kucky
no it was 5 years later at 2000 he died at a car crash

Tomaž Humar was a top climber, never had an injury whilst climbing. Well he broke both of his legs at home, doing some carpenting. The gods called for him on his descent from Langtang.... I guess, when your time is up, its up...
Michael Schumacher managed to race F1 cars for 18 seasons and made it through okay. He goes skiing with his son one day, hits his head on a rock, and suffers a life-altering traumatic brain injury. It's strange how life works sometimes.
In 1995 5 years later in 2000 he died in family car crash
Stan Fox was one lucky F1 crash survivor

Cheever at 0:58

It's amazing how he escaped without a single broken bone... he quit racing after this race, but passed away in 2000 at a car accident. Life is weird, RIP.
Not a broken bone, but he suffered serious head injuries which put him in a coma for five days, and had surgery to have a blood clot removed from his brain.
A car accident he died in 2000 rest in peace

Barely, yes
Hindi pala siya natay
In 95 was 'hard wall' yet
How this wasn’t fatal be a question forever
Yeah that’s the crazy thing about Motorsport crashes is that most crash’s that look fatal aren’t really but the ones that like nothing bad is the most damaging ones
Gordon Smiley and Swede Savage looked terrible tho
@@TDDDDDDDO Swede Savage would have been one of those accidents that looked terrible and still survived had he not gotten an infection while he was in the hospital.
Martin Donnelly could probably answer your question! His accident was way more horrific than Stan Fox's. Donnelly got ejected onto the track with his seat still attached to him after hitting an armco barrier head on at racing speed. There's lots of aftermath footage of that brutal crash...
@@TDDDDDDDO they both died of injuries... Swede Savage 6wks after the fact. Stan Fox survived the crash and died while driving a civilian vehicle years later...

Revoltante ver uma cena dessas...o carro nao ser capaz de proteger o piloto...horrivel ter visto o piloto com o corpo todo exposto...triste...
A corrida ainda continuou?
@@adamoluik7755 Claro.

Crazy that he didn't lose his legs in this. Alex Zanardi had a similar crash where the front of his car tore off and he lost both his legs. You can even see the blood and tissue in pictures of his crash. He survived also though.
Alex Zanardi’s crash was different because his car literally got cut in half and his legs were basically exploded. I’m sure you know that though.
@@pohlars3320 From the initial impact of this crash, it seems most of the damage was done from that and not a secondary crash like Zinardi's. Still pretty amazingly lucky of Fox. The stars had to align for him to escape this without major injuries. Even the last bit of the crash where his bare legs made contact with the wall was just very innocently brushing along. Very, very lucky.
The in car footage of the Billy Monger crash is a real sickener, absolutely nowhere to go and he knew he'd made a mess of his legs. His parents and sister were at the track and his sister went to the scene to be with him as they were taking him out the car. The documentary into the accident and his recovery since is incredible but hasn't had that many views. czcams.com/video/i3fwLgWaFmM/video.html

Crazy SOB's, that's who.
@@davislemons4887 People always repeat this fallacy. Statistically, you're correct but that's down to the fact that there are more cars on the road, i.e more chance of an accident. Conversely, these guys race once every few weeks compared to say you're in your car every day, 5 times a week on average.
