Thank you for posting this. I was a student at Penn when this concerto was premiered by Isaac Stern, and I remember a discussion one evening where both Stern and Rochberg spoke about this concerto. Stern asserted adamantly that this was a great concerto (his early championship is a matter of record) but also that it was the hardest concerto he had ever had to learn. I don’t remember any discussion about the cuts that he had asked for, but I was immensely grateful to hear the restored version in your Naxos recording, and now in this live concert recording.

About half way in there is a progression that for all the world sounds to me like an echo of French church bells ringing. Quite a piece of music.

An epic journey!

I've just finished listening. It's hard to describe how wonderful this is. The second movement is particularly astonishing for me. I own the score of this piece, and yet listening to this recording today it really seems very different from my recollection. I must return to the score and investigate (I wonder if the score I own is not the "original version"). In any case, this version surely is *the one*. A very important concerto!
