Are The FD Asphericals Worth It? | Canon FD 55mm f1.2 Aspherical
Today we are comparing the Canon FD 55mm Aspherical to the regular 55mm SSC to see what you get for your money. The aspherical is worth about ten times the price compared to the regular 55 so this should be fun to see what you get for your money

sx260 hs or this camera?
I carried this camera to the other side of the world. Would buy again
That’s really cool!
Good stuff...and well done video...thanks for sharing your knowledge. Just purchased the 55 1.2 SSC non-aspherical for my Leica SL. Hoping to love it. Cheers...Ron J
Glad you got something from the video! Enjoy the lens
Deberías investigar más y tener más y mejores imágenes de muestra, parece una publicidad del Zeiss
You got a 32GB card to work? Max I could get was 4GB
Oh really?!? That’s wild yeah my card worked fine, just a basic Sandisk card
@@calebbrunkow I’ll try formatting on the camera itself. Also I read that fast write SD cards make old tech cranky. I may have used one of those!
@blainerohlfs it seems like the cheaper the better for sd cards with these old cameras lol
Used the 135 f2.8 AIS on my z6. Focusing is soneasy on the Z bodies. I used it on d700 and d7100. There also focusing was easy due to the focus dot.
Manual focusing on mirrorless cameras is such a nice experience, especially with focus peaking
my favorite lens is the new fx23mm. 1.4 Lm WR by using xt5 >> i going to buy this lens >> right now i'm practice how to manual focus by using fuji len the 23mm. and set it to shooting without len and evf +5 so u can see the highlight when focusing better but the second screen is very small to my eyesight but still i m manage the nail focusing about 85%
That’s awesome!
I have a Pentax though and aberrations are not something that should be happening in my application, most of the stuff in looking at is high contrast, dim and really fine.
Like chromatic aberrations?
@@calebbrunkow chromatic, spherical, coma, and astigmatism. It's not too bad if they are super minor but the less the better.
I have decision paralysis between this and the Fujifilm 27mm pancake only because of WR
me too
This lens works well with a Pentax Q7 camera, full coverage and infinity focus with a $15 adapter.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the head up!
A great review summarising the pros and cons of the 50R as an X-pan alternative. I had one but sold it largely because I was struggling with the ergonomics (particularly lack of grip). I didn't realiser how much I'd miss the files though. I stupidly thought the X-T5 with its 40MP sensor might be an effective alternative. It isn't. (Although it's still a great camera). So I bought a used 50s for £1000. It's practically mint - only used in a studio I think. I'm getting on with it so much better than the 50R, even though it's a little bigger and heavier. So happy to have those files back (and, of course, the 65:24 crop!)
That’s so awesome! Glad you found a camera that works for ya
love the vid i use a sony dsc wx50
Thank you!
For eliminating the yellowing from thorium, I've had the best results using a UVB bulb. They're sold at pet stores and are used for pet lizards.
Appreciate it!
You can also cut a cardboard box so that your lens will align into direct sun. I used to do this with my old thoriated Pentax lenses...it works very well, you just need to be patient...it takes a day or two depending on where you live and how intense the sun is on any particular day. Hope this helps...Ron J
@ronaldjohnston7989 appreciate the insight!
@@ronaldjohnston7989 I live in Arizona, so leaving glass under the sun will cause more problems, such as lubricants getting all over the internals due to expansion, and damage to the plastic parts. UVB bulb works great.
@@enanosiniestro Well that makes perfect sense. I'm in Pennsylvania so never that hot...thanks for the reply and best to you! RJ
Yes they are absolutely amazing lenses..i know vause ive got a half a dozen of them..
That’s awesome! They’re great
Hello friends, how are you? I am a photography enthusiast, but I am not obsessed with cameras, lenses or technicalities. I love photography and to portray images that resemble the reality we see, I have my main camera, however, I am fascinated by the possibility that photography offers us to explore "other realities", thanks to its characteristics, weaknesses, etc.,. To explore those "other dimensions", I love to use cameras from the early 2000's and take advantage of their weaknesses, thanks to noise, focus errors, etc and see how they interpret what they see. I'm following several options and this SD1000 is one of the ones I might be interested in...and also the IXUS 400 which apparently has the same sensor and processor as the PowerShot G2 and G3, and its behavior in terms of color science and ISO treatment is very similar. Maybe the IXUS 400 is more suited to what I need, which is a "rougher" image, less refined...and maybe being older and closer to the analog era, the color reference makes the IXUS 400 closer to the point-and-shoot disposable film cameras. I don't know what you think about it. Greetings from the Mediterranean coast 😊
All of those seem like great options. I haven’t used any of those other ones you mentioned but I’m sure they create similar images
My SD1000 is my Aunt’s who forgot it at my house 8 years ago. It has only 42 pictures on it total, half are from a single party in 2010 and then she didn’t take another picture until 2016.
That’s wild!
I remember when the aspherical was 25k
Woah! When were they that much? I know the 24 was getting around there a while ago
Hermosa camara
Not worth it. I have normal SSC and it’s beautiful for what it is. But, I keep 50L on my Fuji more.
The 50L is definitely more worth it over the regular 50 than the aspherical over the regular 55
I had to think about this very question "Is it worth it" as I have a Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AIS and was thinking of getting the NOCT version that is like $3000+. I came to the conclusion that it really wasn't. It would be cool for bragging rights but even then? Meh. After watching this I can say the same about this Aspherical lens. I have the chrome nose version of these lenses (Sold my SSC back in May) and I really don't think I am missing out too much on not owning this lens either. Great review and congratulations on the lens and set. Maybe make a video about your set ranking them from your favorite to least.
That’s awesome! I’ve been eyeing the 58 Noct for a while but it’s so expensive. That’s a pretty good idea! I’ve been wanting to make a comparison video between canon FD, Leica R, Contax Zeiss, Olympus OM, and a few others but just don’t have the time at the moment as it would take forever to craft that
@@calebbrunkow there is a good video I watched awhile back called "Nikkor 58mm NOCT f1.2 Shoot Out vs 50mm f1.2, f1.4 and Nikon Z 50mm f1.2 S lens. $5000 Vintage lens" that compares the 50 AIS to the NOCT. Pretty similar to this video. Worth a watch.
For the past 3-4 years the interest from the filmmaker community drove up the prices for the whole Canon FD line up. And when you take into account the collector value of the Aspherical version, it makes it simply insane to buy it for most people. Although it looks like prices are trending down for the past year or so, but 55mm Aspherical is still untenable. Also, 55mm Aspherical was the state-of-the-art lens in the 70s that was designed to produce the highest quality image (aka clean modern look) given the limitation of the technology of that age. So for me it sits in the weird place between vintage lenses that produce unmistakably vintage looking images, and modern lenses that display little to no character. With that said, the alure of that golden "Aspherical" badge is still felt after all the decades that passed, soooo... when should we expect the review of the 85mm Aspherical? 😅
Thanks for the input! I’d love to own the 24 and 85 asphericals but simply it makes no sense for me so I’ll stick with my FD 24 1.4 L and 85 1.2 L
@@calebbrunkow Well, never say never: from what I see on the Japanese auctions, these halo lenses are often end up unsold because the demand for has finaly started to come down. So I bet in couple of years we'll be back to the "reasonable" 1$-2$.
@@calebbrunkow Also, it goes without saying at this point, but, as usual, a great, insightful video with great production, and I really hope more people will see it!
Honestly to get a comparable product today you’re talking 2500 so kind of a good deal for something that’s proven it’s worth over 50years
@@TheCreativeContentHub hmm maybe I'm missing something but Voigtlander and all those Chinese brands managed to bring something similar to the market. And those Chinese factories are allegedly ripping off lens designes from 70s, so they are literally doing the same thing all over again :)
With a lens this expensive. No way would I use the sun to correct the Thorium. It will get so hot it is likely to damage the elements. Temperature outside is measured in the shade not direct sunlight so add an extra 15-20 degrees in the direct sun for how hot it is.
Exactly! It is definitely not recommended to use sunlight for that process
There's also a non-SSC, silver nose Canon FD 55mm 1.2, which I own two copies of. In a Canon marketing brochure from the 70s, I found that these 55mm silver nose lenses were the first to have the Canon's Super Spectral coatings, but they were simply never marketed as SSC lenses. I can sort of confirm that, as the lens with the latter serial number (>174xx) definitely has that multicoating color of reflections. But the other one (<164xx) has the blueish/yellowish hue to the lens elements reflections, which makes me think that it has single coatings. These silver nose lenses are quite a bit cheaper and even better looking in my opinion, so hopefully that will help someone to save some money.
Thanks for the input! The chrome noses are great lenses too. They’re quite a bit heavier than the marked SSC versions. I used to have a chrome nose 35mm concave and it was a decent bit heavier than my SSC 35 concave
I can confirm the coating as well. Its beautiful
@@calebbrunkow hmm, you're probably right because when I disassembled both 55mm chrome noses I discovered that their focusing mechanisms are made entirely out of brass. Apparently weight savings wasn't a consideration when those lenses were designed :) But 55mm SSC looks to be the same size, so it's still a beast when compared to another vintage 50mm I have: Zuiko 50mm 1.2. Speaking of which, you should definitely check out some Zuiko glass one of these days: earlier lenses are insanely compact, and the latter ones have Canon L levels of image quality, but Olympus never compromised on the build quality, and... like with Canon glass, there are also plenty of overpriced, overengineered lenses to strive for :)
@androoy.p I have a full set of 12 Olympus OM lenses that I’ve been wanting to make a video of but just haven’t had the time yet and haven’t shot enough with them yet. Love the OM’s though, I’ll get around to making a video on them someday hopefully somewhat soon
@@calebbrunkow Ahahaha, GAS is real 😂 Looking forward to that video some day, especially with some in-depth direct comparison with other vintage lenses, as there aren't many of such comparisons.
Excited to see your take on this. My own findings were very controversial 😂
Thanks Alan! What’s your controversial findings? 😂
@@calebbrunkowI preferred the non ASPH version :)
@alanbesedin I think most people are gonna prefer the non asph version given the price difference. I like the flares on the asph more than the regular but they do get close. The thorium yellowing on the asph is also a pain to deal with since that lens uses a ton of thorium
First comment!
Was hoping to find the Konica UR hexanon 15mm f2,8 among the tested lenses! Otherwise enjoyed you video, even when not knowing how they compare to my Konica!
I was only doing rectilinear lenses for this video
If you need "Fast Wide", the SMC K/KM/KA have those. If the EF ring is a little loose (depending on manufacturer), a layer of Mylar tape with evaporated metal surface stuck to the adapter's front face and trimmed to shape, will fill the gap and make the ring much more secure on the lens. The comments on colour rendition and focus breathing, also match the K/KM/KA's,.. and looks real nice with an anamorphic adapter in front. The comment about being sharp and detailed and softening skin at the same time, is ideal for use on modern cinema cameras, where modern lenses can be harsh and too sharp.
Great points! I’ve been wondering how the slightly newer K mount lenses were but never had any before
@@calebbrunkow I'm missing the 50 f1.2 (in working condition), but have the fastest of each, 24, 35, 50, 85, 100, 135, 200 for my Cine Kit, with follow focus gears I printed from a tool that calculates tooth sizes and diameters, plus my own caps for the mounts and step rings to suit. They've been on Sony, Panasonic, Pentax, Canon DSLR's and MILC's, ILC Camcorders and Cine cameras, plus BMD's and on my AJA Cion. All of them produce spectacular images, for video and for stills. And they're not even from either of Pentax's best lens collections,.....
@PiDsPagePrototypes that is such a cool kit and no way you’ve got an AJA Cion, those look so fun
@@calebbrunkow Put them on a steadicam and chase running actors, from the side,.... No Jello Wobble of bent vertical objects. Global Shutter is fantastic. One of the Cion community members figured out a workspace, from the Uncompressed Linear Raw, in to ANY colourspace you want, so I can shoot on it and just nod to the client, "yeah, it's the same colourspace as you'd get from a Red/Sony/BMD/Fuji/Nikon/Canon/Etc,..." The rest of the difference between them is in the Gaffer's talents.
I use on my xe3 a bigger rubber hood for the fiew finder. Because I use old vitage lenses and for focusing it’s very useful.
That’s really cool! Love using vintage lenses
I saw your video about wanting the Squarehood for that lens a few days before they announced it. I immediately thought about you when they revealed it was finally available. Glad you finally got one!

Sick setup!
I once though the same opinion about the thumb grip, until I brought the original Fujifilm X-E4 thumb grip and thumb rest, it just changes my mind completely. It gives another level of comfortable while holding the camera with one hand. But after putting the lens hood on my XF27mm pancake lens ... it's not a small flat camera anymore 😩
It sure does build up real quick, a nice lens hood looks so good though
you may find the ones you describe as warm use radioactive coated glass be careful , google it
bought an X-E2s used about a month ago and fixed these things to it: 1. Anchor links, reason is obvious 2. a red shutter button, you can hold the camera with your hand around the lens, at hips height pointing forward, and then actually press the shutter button unnoticed, with the palm of your hand 3. a hot shoe cover, on all of my other cameras, this thing rests in the boxes together with the X-T2 flash, or the X-T3 charging device, or the X-H2 charging cable (bought a 2x charger for the batteries instead) unluckily, the hot shoe of the X-E2s does not work! So I decided to leave the hot shoe on. 4. the 7 artisans 25mm/2.0
Awesome setup! That 25mm f2 is awesome, my wife uses it all the time
Has anyone tried it on the black magic pocket 4k?
I have not personally but it should cover the 2.6k mode on the pocket 4K and if not it’ll just have very slight vignetting

Thank you so much!
Wait, o my understanding F stopping down a lens with periferal fog will make it sharper, since you are in theory using less of that peripheral foggy area to create the image... contrary to scratches and dust, the wider the aperture the less visible they are because the mage is being formed with the "whole" glass/lens.
I’m not a lens tech but from my experience this is true
