Battling 70mph Winds in Rocky Mountain National Park | Landscape Photography w/ Fuji GFX 50s II
With the full moon landing on a weekend and clear weather forecast, I knew that I had to make the trip up to Rocky Mountain National Park to see if I could photograph sunrise with the full moon towering over the rocky mountain peaks. What I didn't account for in the weather forecast was the WIND. With a storm system off to the west and rapidly warming weather near my home on the plains, the air was highly imbalanced, leading to howling winds as the temperature and pressure differences rushed to equalize.
Despite the challenges of photography in strong winds, I was determined to find a composition of the full moon and the majestic mountain peaks. I packed my medium format camera kit (Fuji GFX 50s II and lenses) at 4am and hit the road up into the mountains. The experience was certainly memorable - leading to a pretty good haul of images and even more learning experiences. I know now how to better prepare for these conditions as well as found a few new spots that I can plan to photograph in the future.
I hope you enjoy this morning's trip to the Rockies!
Happy shooting,
Brian

Quiet Morning Landscape Photography during a Stunning Sunrise

Saturday morning I woke up at around 7am, sleeping in slightly after a busy work week only to see the sky ablaze to the east. The landscape around my home was cast in a beautiful golden glow with the clouds overhead various shades of purples and pinks against a dark blue pre-dawn sky. I rolled the dice the next morning hoping for similar conditions as I jumped in my Jeep with my coffee and head...
Beautiful Wintry Morning but Boring Location... A Challenging Search for Compositions

After waking up to a fresh blanket of snow, I brewed a fresh pot of coffee and grabbed my GFX to head out for some winter landscape photography on part of a local trail I hadn’t yet explored. Despite beautiful conditions, I found myself struggling a bit to find interesting compositions....

My favorite season of the year is fall, easily. And the best part of fall (other than peak color) is when the first hint of winter takes over, creating a mix of snowy conditions, fall color, chilly temps. Hey Matt - my opinion it’s the best value for money canon camera today. Results that approach medium format (at least comparable to the 50mpx models) and it feels just about bulletproof. If you check my other videos with it you’ll see a lot of the 24-70 2.8 ii, 16-35 f4, and 100-400 ii. I have others but those are the main 3

    Quite an interesting comparison. Cameras have come a long way in the past decade, especially in focusing and video capabilities, thanks to mirrorless and image processing tech. But when it comes to resolution and color science, the progress hasn't been as noticeable. Fuji's got some charm, but it's not a huge leap ahead, in my book. I still think it falls short of the incredible detail and color you get with 6x9 film. Seriously, give medium format Ektar or Portra a try, and you'll see what I mean. And don't get me started on wide to ultra-wide lenses on full-frame digital cameras. They just don't do it for me, no matter how good the gear is. Stitching images helps, but it's not always practical. Meanwhile, wide angles on medium format cameras? Now, that's a different story - miles better! Would I go for the Fuji? Nah, not my cup of tea. I'll stick with my trusty 5DS R and R6 for digital stuff and keep medium format photography to film. Digital medium format still has a ways to go, in my opinion.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 2 měsíci

      All valid points. I haven't given MF film a try yet, but maybe someday. The high cost of film and processing has been a hangup of mine. I slightly disagree with you on the improvement of digital MF. I can definitely see a pretty substantial improvement over even the superb 5DSR images. Whether that's enough of a reason to have another body and set of lenses, well that's something I'm still wrestling with :)

    When comparing fuji to 5DSR, did you account for diffraction? I mostly use my lenses for shots of this type at around f5, since after that I see loss of sharpness on 5DSr due to diffraction, which is confirmed by DXOmark data. The key is to have good lenses of course, the ones that don't drag their corners up untif F8 or so. Since Fujis pixels and sensor are bigger, the Fuji suffers from diffraction much less. I believe that 5DSr could have held its own better if the lens was a bit more open in your test.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 3 měsíci

      Great point! And I did... somewhat haha. When I shoot with either Canon body, I tend to stick around f/8 to f/10 depending on the type of DOF needed. While I could shoot below the 5DSR's diffraction limited aperture of ~f/7.1, but then I could potentially need to focus stack to get more pieces of the scene in focus, which adds a lot to the workflow vs. just stopping down to f/9. At that point, any diffraction is barely noticeable, at least in my experience. I have noticed it once stopping down beyond f/11, so I use that as my smallest aperture. If anything, stopping down should've benefitted the R5, which shouldn't be diffraction limited until f/9 or later. Based only on the diffraction and pixel size, the R5 should be sharper, but it isn't (excluding lens impact). I'd say this has more to do with the AA filter than anything. Yes, you are correct that the GFX and it's bigger pixels allow stopping down further. I could do a follow up with wider apertures at some point that could address your points.

      @sunlbx Před 3 měsíci

      @@brianbeattyphotography thanks! it would be interesting to watch, I am sure of that. also, I sincerely believe you could have gotten away with f5.6 on the 5DSr in your first faraway-snowy-mountain shot, if you had placed the center of DOF on the closest trees of that forest. I, as a user of 5DSr, also find that demosaicing with DXO Pureraw 3 gives me better detail than in Lightroom, for some reason. I also denoise the files with their deep prime xd algorithm, which doesn't kill detail at all and lets me raise the shadows without noise showing up. I dunno how they did that, but the detail is neither sharpened nor lost when denoising.

    Thanks for this review, just what I've been looking for. The other reviews talk more about video than photography and don't make a review just like yours. I'm using a 6D mark II but I'm planning on getting a 5DS R for some photos that need more detail, like facades, interiors with a lot of textures and fabrics or some where the trees in the background would need a little more of detail. The only thing that keeps me thinking is the dynamic range, I don't think the 6D is better but I would be guessing. The R5 is a great camera, I think it really fullfill my needs but is not in my budget. I was thinking in the sony A7 IV, and it may be in my budget but I like Canon. Is very difficult to decide.

      I had the 6d2 too! Back before starting YT. I sold it a few months later though because I never really connected with it. The 5dsr is so much better in so many ways. DR, detail, build quality, etc. For what you describe it would be perfect and way cheaper than the R5. The only things the R5 is better at is autofocus and dynamic range. Detail would be better on the 5dsr. Good news is that it can be found for $1100 or so too, which is crazy good value. Just use a tripod and shutter release to get the most out of those details!

    Not familiar with GFX sensor/lens depth of field and other differences. Referring to final image why shoot f/10 on flat scene? Considering the windy conditions, wider f stop would allow faster shutter to minimize shake from wind. You succeeded in capturing magical light on mountain scene along with moon.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you! When the scene is flat like that yes I could’ve stayed with a wider aperture. It’s a little misleading with all the wind, but I was somewhat protected from the wind behind the embankment of the creek on the other side of where I was standing. F/10 is my go to aperture to make sure even flat surfaces are all sharp in the off chance that there’s some slight variation I can’t quite see when shooting

    In RAW, I dont get the colour story. The colours you see has to do with the sensor, but also with the profile you apply to the raw data. So if you create the correct profile, the colour can be whatever you want it to be. You can fix it by editing, but it should actually be a raw thing. But the image resolving is real and DR obviously also. It is a pity that one cannot really see what you describe, I imagine because of compression on youtube. But when you zoom in, yeah I see what you are on about. Good to know. Thank you, this is valuable.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 4 měsíci

      that’s a fair point about colors, but I’ve found that the closer a camera is to what I really see at the time, then I end up liking the image more with minimal editing. It’s possible I could get similar colors with the R5 by adjusting the hues of each channel individually, but that’s a ton more work as I end up needing to mask many different areas too to isolate where the colors need changed.

    Wow, we are at the tail end of three days of continuous 55 mph wind and though I did get out one afternoon for some photography it was pretty unpleasant. But in the end those sometimes end up being the most memorable days, even if I don't come away with the best shots. At 8:39 I think I liked the zoomed in shot a little better because ultimately there are a couple distractions in the creek that offset the added benefit of keeping it in. Regardless, they are both pretty magical shots!

      Thanks Chad! I really was too. I kept checking after to make sure I at least got one or two versions of the image sharp and took at least 5-6 each time just to make sure. Thankfully the wind was fairly gusty, so I could try to time it a little

    I think I prefer the last image that is zoomed in closer to the mountains. Although the one with a bit of the creek is nice. It doesn’t add to the image. To me the main subject there is the mountain and the moon. And that first image straight up and down is definitely a keeper. The rocks contrast beautifully against the white ice! Well done.

    For landscape photography, I conclude the old 5DSR is not only as good as the newer R5 in 2024 for properly exposed images in the ISO 100-400 range, but it is a great value at only $1100 to $1200 used in excellent condition. I can't think of a time when I have ever under exposed by 3 stops. The added insurance to lift the shadows of the R5 is indeed nice, but it comes at a hefty price tag. I am using the 5DSR as a second/backup to my R5 for landscape work.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 4 měsíci

      Could not agree more! Only thing is that the 5DSR is still ahead of the R5 for me. If I take the time to properly expose, keep ISO at 100, and use a tripod, it's still the better option.

    Photo at 11:45 of ferns is great! A focus stack would have sealed the deal with a 10/10 imho. I think landscape photography in PA is one of the hardest photography exercises there is. It takes a lot of time and effort to find and refine compositions. The forests are usually very busy with foliage, second generation tree growth is very common, and our mountains were ground down to rounded sameness by the glacier maximum.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks! Glad you like it. I actually tried a focus stack but with the slight wind it became a processing impossibility with all the movement. PA can definitely be a challenge but that’s what makes it so fun 👍

      Oh there’s definitely an impact in terms of burst, processing time, probably the film sims, EVF, IBIS, all of which the processor supports that makes it a huge improvement with a better user experience.
