This is what young people have to do. Work hard and grow. Grow from the neck up. Even if you do not see your star rising, in due time you will if you refrain from negativity, conspiracies, and abusing those people in your circle. Think and do family. That chain must and will be strong, forever!!!
Got chills the first time I watched it and still do fifty something times later watching it. Greatest sports movie ever. Kurt Russell doesn't get the credit he deserves. Miracle and Tombstone are masterpieces.
I remember being so focused on the idea that you don't need to be the best all the time. Sometimes, you only need to be the best today. You dont need to worry about being the best later on. Or if people will remember you being the best ever. You just need to be the best today because you can. You don't always win, but put all the energy into winning today and it will matter today. Worry about tomorrow tomorrow,
Hockey players are just different but if every person was built like a hockey player we wouldn’t lack an effort as a people. Toughest people I know. Including all sports
Locker room speeches are cliche in movies, but the effect they have is real. In my JV year of football, we were terrible but in the very first game at halftime (which we were losing) our coach gave us a speech that by the end he was literally crying, telling us we were better than this. We ended up going undefeated that year, and in then the next 2 years of varsity. That one speech transformed the entire group of guys.
I was 9 years old this game was played and it still brings tears to my eyes thinking about how proud I was and how big this win was for the USA. Easily the biggest game every played. I will remember it forever. I pray for an event like this to bring our country back together. Those days in our country are not a whole lot different then the way they are now.
In Canada hockey is the dance of life, it's our game, but I've never seen anything like this Lake Placid US team before or since. Total desire, amazing performance. Indelibly etched on my mind 44 years later
I’ve seen so many comments from Canadians alive at the time to watch/listen to the “Miracle on Ice” back when it happened, and it seems like the border between the US and Canada didn’t matter at all, it was like their victory as well.
Even 44 years later I'm still ecstatic for Herb Brooks even posthumously because of what it meant to Herb. Here's a trivia question you can ask over and over again w/ friends & family and or sitting in a bar. What was the name of the player that had the winning contribution toward his team's victory in the greatest Win in Team Sports history? It's Mike Eruzione the team captain and less physically talented of his teammates. Greatest Moment in USA Sports History and there is NOT a close second!
I watched the game and jumped for joy when we won! I grew up watching The Rangers in Madison Square Garden. The Lake Placid Olympic victory was an iconic sports victory for the ages! It brings a tear just remembering the passion, the joy, THE PATRIOTISM!
THEY DID SOMETHING GREAT....Beyond Themselves!!!! UNDERSTAND??!! GRESTNESS!! THEY GAVE ALL THEY HAD AND IT WAS JUST GOOD ENOUGH!! Will never forget this!!
I hope USA in 2026, in some locker room somewhere where the Final is, is sitting there wondering, if and why them? Then they have a coach walk in and give them something like this that leads the USA to the 1st ever Gold Ball.
The telegram and postcard wall must have been an amazing reward for them after learning who they represent and all the sweat and blood they paid to get there.
The following game was against Finland. Speech after the second period was “lose this one and you’ll take it to your Fu@king graves!” Another come from behind win!
I remember watching the actual game in college with a bunch of my ROTC friends. We all went absolutely nuts. This was a wonderful speech - Kurt Russell did a fantastic job. And as someone born in Michigan's upper peninsula, who grew up hearing speech filled with immigrant 2nd generation accents? His was dead on - a small thing that shows the details of a great actor.
Tap the stick on every letter
Kurt's such a pro....
I was 11 when this happened. I still watch 1980 Hockey highlights. Core memory for me.

if coach giving that speech i’m giving a heart and a half n
Need English first my boy
It is impossible for me to ever hate America growing up seeing this in the 80s. Every young person today needs to see this.

In the actual pre-game speech Herb didn't say "screw 'em"... :)
Dude

I don’t want to ruin an epic moment but this was not a miracle. Team USA deserved to win that game.
In fairness Coach Brooks taught the USA team how Europeans play hickey different from Americans/Canadians. That made all the difference in the world.

The tap of the roster card on the binder is just so classic Minnesota. RIP

It’s sad today probably half the country would be pulling against them
You are one thousand percent wrong.
NOT TONIGHT! USA!!!
they dont make them like this anymore
Modern day David and Goliath! God Bless those boys and coach! RIP HB.
Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world .... I would run through a brick wall after that line
The best team ever! USA

My little sister plays hockey and the local rink plays a part of this speech out loud before her team’s home games. It’s a great way to generate hype.
Great moments, were born from great opportunity!
Iconic line............Herb Brooks hit it out of the park w/ that comment. It will live forever in USA Sports History and beyond.
And thats what youve got here tonite boys

I still wonder what would’ve happened if the guy hadn’t tapped Eruzione’s helmet.

USA 🇺🇸 !!!
THEY DID SOMETHING GREAT....Beyond Themselves!!!! UNDERSTAND??!! GRESTNESS!! THEY GAVE ALL THEY HAD AND IT WAS JUST GOOD ENOUGH!! Will never forget this!!
BEST. sports.memory. ever. Period.
No, inches speech from Any Given Sunday by Pacino is the best speech.
Why. A. Period. After. Every. Word? A foolish attempt at effect or creating sensationalism
We need this today . 2024
Kurt didn't even get an Oscar nod... Easily his best performance
I 2nd that 100%!

When Herb said "screw em" The puck was officially dropped. You saw it in their eyes. They won the game right here.
he really said, 'fuck 'em' but this is Disney
When America was still built by men
One of my high school teachers was Patrick Demsey's dad. Mr. (Gene) Demsey. He's is the Jolly Green Giant. Hope you're well Mr. Demsey.
Every time I see this clip... I get a big lump in my throat.
Doc just recently passed away at 100.
I love the line "Maybe if they hate him enough, they won't have time to hate each other."
Patriots!!

Loved his accent. Such a Midwestern souvenir.
