that hairdo on joan, always reminds me of my Granny, who wore her hair like that and i LOVED IT! as a small child all that hair piled up so high was pure magic. Granny was a Super Great Lady too, kind and loving, lived a humble life, died of heart failure when i was 16, at the time, i thought that meant a broken heart. ❤RIP Granny: its been almost 50years, but, still thinking of You still loving You still missing You xox

This is amusing, but Joan Crawford was a very kind and generous person. Her twin daughters adored her. Christina was a holy terror intensely craving praise. Not affection...just praise. She never got it because she wasn't particularly nice. Nor was she very talented. She was determined Joan Crawford would pay the price for that.

Did Mrs. Chadwick ever say anything about Joan Crawford? I’ve never read an interview with her - I assume you are referring to the headmistress at Christina’s school. However, I read this account from a Chadwick student in Vanity Fair that was illuminating. “HOW CAN I BELIEVE “Daughter Dearest” [by Charlotte Chandler, March] when I personally know that much of the information written in it is totally false? In 1952, I was enrolled in the fifth grade as a scholarship student at Chadwick School, in Rolling Hills, California. To help defray costs, my mother served as a secretary to the school’s founder and headmistress, Mrs. Margaret Lee Chadwick. At that time, both Christopher and Christina Crawford were students at Chadwick, Christopher in fourth grade and Christina in eighth. Christina also worked as a cleaning girl in Mrs. Chadwick’s home. Joan would call the school extremely agitated and disturbed at times when my mother was working the switchboard. She would scream into the phone, demanding that one or the other of her children be put on the line immediately. On one of these occasions, my mother, who was partially disabled, explained to her that the entire school was at an assembly in the auditorium (a building half a mile away across the large campus) and that she was physically unable to go and get Christina to speak to her. Often, both Crawford children were not picked up for the alternating weekends when boarding children returned home. Faculty would be forced to host them. Whatever Christina went through was pale in comparison to Joan's childhood. Joan crawled her way out of poverty and sexual abuse to reach where she did in life. She was able to give Christina a life, and education that her birth parents could not give her. Joan also left her a legacy that she could exploit and make money from.
