    A few points. 1. most social security recipients did not pay taxes already on their benefits, since their employer contributed half of the annual payroll tax contribution. Only self employed individuals paid the full payroll tax. 2 The taxes on social security benefits are paid to the Social Security Trust Fund, extending its solvency. 3. Since this doesn't go into the general fund, it is indirectly a cut in benefits. About half of social security recipients are actually taxed. Of those, the most adversely effected financially are probably those who have limited additional taxable income and have to pay the tax. For high income taxpayers, the burden is usually minimal. The failure to index the income thresholds since 1984, when the law was passed, is probably the main reason why low and middle class taxpayers are caught in the middle of this tax issue.

    Well, I retired at 65, which I still consider to have been just perfect. I really did not want to retire earlier than that. Went to the SS office & signed up for SS & Medicare all at one time & it was very easy. Hey Josh, remember the other day when you were talking about reading Anne Rivers Siddons?, which kind of surprised me & it jogged my memory about her & I got her book, The House Next Door, which is one of her earlier works. Very engaging & kind of spooky. Here's one to add to you reading list...Fever in the Heartland by Tim Egan. It's about the Klu Klux Klan. Whew! Very interesting.

    The difference is living or retired comfortably. I am sure SS is enough for people to maintain basic living or surviving. But if the retirement includes two international trips and multi domestic trips. Enjoy fine food once in a while. Don’t have to worry if the roof or HVAC needs replacement. Then you will need more than SS.

    The title reminds me of a CZcams channel called Buzz's Retirement Garage, where Buzz left his job in late 2023 at age 63 when his company was about to encounter financial troubles, and instead of searching for another job, decided to try to live solely on his and his wife's social security total of $3783/month. The main videos I watch are the ones at the end of each month where he breaks down their expenses from that month in great detail. He's not super knowledgeable about personal finance, but he doesn't pretend to be, and that sort of real, in depth information is just so interesting! It helps that he seems like such a genuine, likeable guy, too.

    Every persons situation is unique. $5k in California wouldn’t cut it even if you are debt free however in Wyoming or many other states you can live just fine. Also depends on needs and wants. You may want to travel in retirement - not cheap either domestic or international. Need an emergency fund - refrigerator craps out of transmission goes in the car. Again, just saying it depends on your individual circumstances.

    If you want to help senior citizens, especially those on social security and medicare part b, take their AGI after deductions. Those who gamble won't end up paying 85% social security tax plus maximum part b cost for the next year. Seniors like to gamble, but just one win of a few thousand dollars (which you lost) could cost you a lot in taxes and medicare part b. I know - it happened to me.

    I agree with Josh. People make too big a deal about it in most cases. I have been retired almost 5 years now (when I was 56) - and if I add up my premiums plus out of pocket (medical & dental ) and compare it to what I spent on healthcare in 2019 while still working it’s only about $2k a year more in 2024. Even if it was 5k more than 2019 I’d have no regrets about retiring early! COBRA from work for most of 2020 was actually THE most expensive healthcare year I ever had! 2021 was $1000 less than 2019 with employer insurance. Now $2k a year more than 2019… not a big deal. Not much more than Medicare B plus a Supplement. Don’t let it keep you from retiring if you are otherwise ready. Don’t just assume it’s THE big difference maker like the MSM and some so-called finance gurus preach!

    PPO’s are a waste of money in my opinion. You don’t get any better care and the premiums are higher. You do get a bigger pool of MD’s to choose from and that’s about it. Never had a PPO in the 35 years of employment and I lived to tell about it. When working, healthcare was running about 250.00 a month give or take. My IRMAA charges will actually end up being more than that in retirement.

    • @thomasmoshier3920
      @thomasmoshier3920 Před 20 hodinami

      What are the odds you get sick while visiting Nebraska? HMO’s should cover urgent care visits. If you or one of your kids have a specific illness requiring special medical care then sure, go with the PPO. But if everyone is happy and healthy you need health care for colds and flu’s and the occasional broken bones. Maybe a tonsillectomy or prenatal care. HMO can do all that in spades. We always had open enrollment every year and I never felt the need to switch to a PPO. I did however pay extra for better dental care. Kids always get cavities and need braces.
