28:00 I remember one of the biggest issues in undergrad was, it was meant to be a time of learning and discussion but when it came to the final crit, even though you were told it’s a discussion you would find yourself irritating the lectures if you didn’t simply agree. I think it’s a product of time constraint (you’re not the only student so you can’t debate for hours), also perhaps a perceived defensiveness but sometimes you didn’t want to be the type of architect they were encouraging you to be. But sometimes you were wrong, hard to know what to take on and what to reject when you’re looking from the bottom up 😄 Thankfully post-grad was much more of a discussion. And there was basically only constructive criticism.

He's full of words that don't mean much. I saw a lecture where Zaha, Foster and this guy were in, somewhere in Spain. Zaha and Foster were of course razor sharp in their ideas. This guy spoke from time to time and you literally fell sleep instantly. Doesn't really say anything meaningful!....annoyingly people like this that can talk confusingly can get to the top, architecture is full of these tools. I would hate it if I had to attend his lectures. Theorists that don't do much. I listened to about 20 % of this whilst at work (architect) ,.... switching off before I need to slap myself awake. Watch one of Fosters, or Renzo Piano videos (proper architects) as an antidote to this nonsense, and you will actually learn something.

He is getting to emergent properties of urban design from a very difficult, obtuse angle. Architects need to learn more about the concept of emergent properties. Cities will surpass the beauty of any city we have today.

A marketing strategy for an architectural style by claiming that the style represents an almost scientific discipline. In fact, the organic masses style (which is what it is after all the jargon is removed) may lend itself to some unique functionality when a patron wants to advertise his building with a dominant, unusual look, and is willing to pay the astronomical cost for it. There are very few successful examples that are highly artistic and people respond positively to them. However, at most, any integrated urban fabric of any city will not comfortably accommodate more than one building of this style. In addition, this style quickly loses its lustre with repetition, especially when it is crammed into an urban environment without any justification, and what is worse is when it is practice without any artistic sense.

If we assume objective beauty comes from evolutionary traits and pattern recognition (EG: plant is good to eat, so it makes us happy to see it -we think its beautiful, mechanism for survival) then it would likely never be universal beauty and vary accross geographic regions? I think beauty can be both objective and subjective in its own way. I would catagories beauty to A : objective 'survival' beauty, biomorphic etc (mainly what was discussed in the interview) and then B : 'spiritual' beauty, this more subjective beauty which clearly exists and is far harder to pinpoint, perhaps more related to culture than to survival mechanisms. Both catagories likely merge and intermingle.

Not mentioning any of the contemporary cultural conditions that produces homogenous architecture or the level of social inequality during antiquity and pre-enlightenment which subsequently birthed modernity, tells you everything you need to know.

Very stimulating Bruce, Thanks for your keen diligence with this. You may be interested in a concept called Living Design Process which is greatly inspired by Christopher Alexander, though aims to work from the core premise of how we may design and create health and wholeness through living processes (rather than simply try to extend on Alexander's life work). The subject of LDP is intentionally not limited to architecture (but more broadly in the realm of 'making' and creation processes). Influences in the ongoing development of this concept are: Henri Bortoft, David Bohm, Carol Sanford, Regenesis group, Allan Savory, Gurdjief, Robert Fritz, Possibility Management, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Daniel Schmachtenberger, among many others. Some high level questions are: How conscious are we of where our creative processes are sourced (eg: mechanistic worldview/assembly, growth and evolution, hegemonic "best practices")? How would it go if human processes of design and creation were at one with how the rest of life continually creates itself? Sadly, the key inquisitor of LDP has tragically passed on just last year, however there is a small community of practice who continue to explore these questions and experiment with the idea of Living Design Process in our own realms.
