Tiny Mac mini M4 - PORTS DELETED‽
This is Unbelievable! It’s like the original iMac having no floppy drive! Apple HATES ports!
I told you things were getting busy! So, Mark Gurman, holder of knowledge at Bloomberg has revealed some new tidbits about the Mac mini that will be released with a new smaller design, and a change to the port selection that we’re getting on the device, which is going to upset some.
The new version of the Mac mini will be much smaller than the previous generation, with a footprint much closer to the Apple TV, and potentially slightly taller than the current version, which in my head makes it basically a scaled down Mac Studio. And, it has another Mac Studio like feature, which we’ll come to in a moment.
So first up, the power supply will be internal, no external power brick like the iMac, and I don’t think anyone will be upset about that. Just a power cord right in the back, alongside 3 USB-C ports, HDMI, Ethernet and a headphone jack. That’s right, while we were worried before about the future of the ethernet and headphone jack, it seems they were just missed off the original leak. Winning. That’s not it though, just like the Mac Studio, we’re apparently getting front USB-C ports too, a pair of them, so you won’t have to give it the classic reach around.
But here we go with what will most likely cause the most controversy. The USB-A ports will be no more. And good riddance.
Smash the dislike button - I know, I know, you’re all going to hate me for saying it, but losing the USB-A is overdue. No, it shouldn’t come back on the laptops. No, it shouldn’t come back on the Mac Pro or the iMac. And most likely it’ll be gone from the Mac Studio later this year too. And that’s good. Hear me out.
Remember when we mentioned the first iMac not having a floppy drive, and that being super controversial? It had a CD drive instead. It was also controversial because it introduced USB-A - version 1.1 in the place of ADB, GeoPort and SCSI.
Apple has form. Apple has always been this way, and probably will always be this way. USB was originally developed by Intel and was struggling for adoption when Apple adopted it in 1998. And while the change from those old ports was uncomfortable for some, it didn’t make the iMac struggle, it flourished. It saved Apple. And the industry followed. Just like you can follow my channel by capacitively touching the subscribe button. Don’t smash it. Too aggressive.
Then in 2015 Apple was one of the first companies to bring USB-C to their devices in the tiny 12” MacBook, again, ahead of the vast majority of their competitors, and again, at the cost of older legacy ports, like USB-A. Almost 10 years later, and Apple has finally relented and replaced the Lightning charge port on the iPhone with USB-C too, because USB-C is now so ubiquitous.
So is it time to do away with USB-A? The cries of people with older wired peripherals would say no. But Bluetooth is ubiquitous, and almost all devices with a USB-A cable could just get a new cable, so this isn’t exactly DongleGate all over again. BUT - if you do need some USB-A to USB-C adapters, I’ve linked some in the description.
Honestly, the USB-A ports were super handy for the Mac mini in its first role, a drop in replacement for people who wanted to dip a toe into the Mac ecosystem and keep their keyboard, mouse and display. But now, bluetooth keyboards and mice are super cheap and there’s designs for every taste. The other major use of those ports was USB-Thumb drives, but with the advent of airdrop, google drive, dropbox, and iCloud, the utility of them is way less than in the past, and doesn’t really outweigh the risks of them being used to deploy malware or even direct electronic attacks that can fry a system just by being plugged in.
And just as a reminder, this new Mac mini will be landing before the end of the year, with M4 AND M4 Pro inside, most likely at an October event alongside an M4 iMac and M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pros, which will apart from that Mac mini all look basically as they do right now. And I still think there’s an outside chance Apple could have the new Mac mini pulling double duty as an Apple TV Ultra, bringing higher end gaming to your TV. But, like a very outside chance.
So, a decade after USB-C, will you mourn the loss of USB-A? Or will you embrace change? We all love progress when it comes to performance, speed, more storage, better efficiency, but somehow if we loose a port we’re used to, the world is going to end. We’ve managed fine without SCSI, FireWire, iPod 30 pin connectors, parallel ports, and even DVI. At some point, it’s kinder to just say goodbye.

So many people complaining about the loss of USB-A but they fail to realize that so many people with it have purchased 3rd party docks that come with extra ports. The market for docks is insane you can spend a day getting lost online comparing all the ones out there and it is great !! I was waiting for the M3 Mac Mini and now I am extremely happy it got scrapped and a new M4 Mac Mini with a body refresh is coming out !!!
2 year old washing machine had the drain pump go out and I had to fix it, literally the NEXT day the dryer went out. Now I’m here fixing my Samsung washing machine a few weeks later. These are only 1-2 years old and we do take care of them (clean filter etc.) All their products are trash
Imagine having a Samsung phone…
yea good riddance to the USA-A ports, so we can spend more money on docks and hubs that sometimes aren't as stable as native ports, because nobody is using USB A ports anymore. Yea because bluetooth isn't full of problems and connection issues, yea because we all have endless truck loads of cash to replace all of our USB-A port drives with large capacity SSDs which are still incredibly expensive. Yea makes sense. Ok
Ahhh. A guy that gets to the point. Sub’d Looking to upgrade my 2016 MPB! (I stopped everything during 2020 covid when the world went stupid).
I try not to waffle too much! 😂
Sir when will be macbook pros.. Release begining of oct aur beginning of nov.. Aur is best to go for discount mac pro m3 max. Is there any battery longevity improvements in m4 aur built aur ports features coming as it only a month away so I hope to get ur response to this. 😊
Late October I think, no port changes, but M4 is more efficient so could get some battery life gains
So is there gonna be a redesign?
Not on the MacBook Pros, the Mac mini is set to get one this fall.
If you want more ports then just click option 3 on the “buy” part of their mac mini web page…it is only an extra 1k…and you get 3 ports
I find USB-A frustrating since it’s physically polarizing. As you said: “let it die”. USB-A to USB-C adapters are cheap if one needs to use legacy USB-A accessories. ISB-C is/should be the default and if Mark Gurman is right about five USB-C ports on the M4 Mac Mini, I’m in!
Good bye USB-A!
I don’t hate you for saying it. I’ll say it with you. “Good Riddance!” USB A needs to go and live in the home with the serial ports now.
Should i upgrade to m4 from a 2019 intel MacBook Pro? I heard M5 changes are massive but definitely could use an upgrade asap
Anything with Intel, you'd have seen an enormous jump in performance even with M1 - M4 is well worth it - I've seen nothing on M5 yet but if you have a source, please share!
They could at least make an affordable dock with like 5 to 8 USB-A's on it for the MacBook and Mini's. There are so many devices you still need them on EVERY actual machine used for business application.. Every memory stick clients and suppliers hand to you is USB-A. Headset dongle, monitor Speakerbar, Handsfree conference devices, External Desktop storage disks, monitor webcams, printers, Document Scanners, barcode scanners signature pads etc etc all USB-A. Even with USB-C cables, there are not enough ports to connect everything without swapping. So a simple offical Dock would solve so much of the USB-A and number of port issues. Bluetooth devices are simply not provided by businesses due to costs and support issues with wireless devices. Most businesses also only supply cabled keyboards and mice to staff. The trick is for apple to make a dock or USB hub that is cost effective and uses a thunderbolt port bandwidth and not simply a USB-C dock which bottlenecks all devices over a single 10Gb/s USB-C port.
I can't imagine Apple doing it because that would basically endorse keeping those standards around. Makes perfect sense for third parties to do though!
What makes you think a dock or a hub wouldn't be available? Also seems like you have come across offices that aren't exactly up to date. Most businesses around here run Bluetooth and wireless stuff. I can't remember the last time I saw a wired printer or external desktop drives.
Excited for the new base Mac mini. I will take the smaller size, new design and 2 front facing additional USB-C ports over 2 USB-A ports all day long. For me additional Unified Memory and a new design are the most important considerations. a Front facing SD card reader would also be welcome but not a deal breaker. I do not see dropping those A ports from the M4 Studio ie it would require retooling of the moulds at additional cost.
The fact it's also likely starting with 16GB of unified memory on M4 is a MASSIVE win too!
Also on the Studio, because each shell is CNC cut from an aluminium block there are no moulds involved, so it would likely not be a massive cost to update.
@@iCaveDave Yes if this is true I will order immediately once it is available here. The mini will make a great mactv when I upgrade to a Studio in the future.
@@iCaveDave It is milled from a solid block? Then it might come true ie it just involves deleting lines of instructions from the CAM file. But... is notoriously lazy in updating things that are not big money spinners. ie the mini took 14 years to redesign.
Absolutely, we just need Front Row back!
Huzzah usb-c. Forget 3rd time right usb-a. My dell pc for, when I need a pc, front ports fell apart after a couple of months of plugging midi adaptor in and out. Now to find a usb-c midi cable.
Yep, new cable time!
No issue with me if Apple are scrapping usba but I do want more usbc ports if they’re going to do that
2 USB-A for 3 USB-C is a good trade.
Thanks for the info roundup/opinions Dave! I´ll upgrade from my M1 mac mini which has been mightily problèmatic recently kept freezing up from systém data bloating (spotlight index was the culprit); other issues and generally lagging with my old friend the beachball wheel of death around every corner. I might miss the USB-A port until I get some sense and a few new cables. Keep smiling and all the best from southeast France!
I'm surprised to hear the M1 mini is locking up - that's what I'm typing this from - is your storage almost full? May be an issue with the swap struggling.
Hey iCaveDave, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, currently I'm looking for more works, I see you have a iC logo but I think you could benefit with a logo that is more quirky like these small Easter eggs and animation Apple UI has, I have a logo idea for you that fit really well for that, it has Apple element in it to represent the I, it has Cave and Dave ideas too, all without a letter in the logo, let me know if you interested for me to work on it for you to have it! :-)
Shakespeare 2024: “Alas, poor USB-A Port, I knew him well”.
Direct quote. Love it.
Ok, Dave, I STILL think you’re secretly dreaming for a USB-A port on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Come on Dave, ADMIT IT! 😵
I think it's the only reason they made it so big. We've cracked the case!
@@iCaveDave LOL! Sherlock “Dave” Holmes, cracks the case again!
Nice, informative video. I hope you're right about the extra USB-C port (vs the 4 in the current Pro model)! I expect to buy one of the new Mini's when they come out, and for me, more C ports is what is important. I can get along without a USB-A port by using a USB-A to USB-C adapter. I could still use a fast SD port if only they would add one of these too!
I feel like the number of people using SD cards these days is dropping because phones are most people's primary cameras, so I don't hold too much hope.
I’m fine with it. The only use I have for a USB-A port is my Logitech Bluetooth dongle. Other than that… I don’t use “A”. Everything is “C”.
Eventually Logitech will hopefully update those too!
Sorry, couldnt finish watching. Plosives were killing me.
Imagine being the one having to edit it. Painful.
I want to see Apple Adobe the eye tracking and eliminate the mouse and keyboard.
Its coming on iOS and iPad this year, so maybe once Macs get FaceID.
They don't hate ports they love money. Removing the ports would lead customers to the mac Studio. So maybe a slight price drop on the entry level model...Both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio... but better margins...
They're not removing ports, they're adding more and swapping old ones for new ones. And the Studio is likely to get rid of the old ports too
The Mac Mini just becoming every other Mini PC will be unfortunate
Not sure what you mean by that?
@@iCaveDave Limited on ports, the thing that the Mac Mini had was an incredible I/O selection compared to most Windows mini pcs of the same price. Like sure you could get one with the same ports but that's a higher-end Mini PC. The Mac Mini could get you all of that for just $500.
This is bringing more ports, not fewer, and they’re more modern, faster ports.
@@RobloxianX If you need ports there are docks and hubs and adapters. Apple wants to move forwards. There is no need to hold on to obsolete ports when most people won't use them. The Mini will have an M-chip and will run macOS so it still will be different from any other Mini-PC.
I think my Mac Mini M2 will stay around a while longer, since it supplies As and Cs, and I have it sitting on a matched shape expander that provides 2 As, a C, SD card slots, an audio jack, and an internal SSD slot where I keep my Time Machine backups for all my Macs on a 1 Gig SSD drive. If it ain’t broke, don’t “fix” it.
I have one of those expanders under my M1 mini too, still going strong!
Knew this would happen sooner or later. i have no problem with it, USB-C will take over all these, just as one day there will be another interface that takes over USB-C
Not if Europe has anything to do with it! The forever hole.
DONGLE FOR THE MAC MINI??? 😵💫🤯
Only If you have old stuff.
I think it’s time to get rid of usb-a tbh. It’s been enough years especially since iPhone changed that Im on usb-c anyways. I think the port selection is good enough for a consumer product.
100%
Have you looked at the MB Pro right side lately ????
It does not have USB-A.
I understand narrow margins on low end devices, but I also wonder if there won’t be tax breaks for Stateside manufacturing of entire PCs now that there is the same in place for microchip production. Seems like mini would be a no-brainer in that case. Just a hypothetical.
Would be pretty cool to be fair.
I still miss my Griffin Powermate knob. Yes that was USB-A, but It got lost in a move long ago. I weep.😢
I have no idea what that is but I enjoy a funny name.
@@iCaveDave it was super cool but very simple. A big old programmable knob made out of machined aluminum with a glowing blue base that would tell you if your Mac was asleep by slowly pulsing. I used it mostly as a volume control, because its movements were too dampened to use it to play pong. I had one back in the pre-Intel days.
Just been over on reddit reading some of the apoplectic "OMG they're removing the USB-A!!!" comments. Apparently every time Apple remove a legacy port from a new product, 2000 cute little puppies die. And I look forward to no longer shaking with frustration every time I flip a USB-A connector over 3 times to try to get the bloody thing into the slot (even worse when you're trying to do it blind behind the machine). I have $5 adaptor to use on those products where the manufacturer stubbornly insists on not updating their cable to USB-C.
Reddit is such a wonderful place.
Its not a legacy port when like 80% of devices use it, including the new ones. There is no reason they couldn't have 3 USB C and 1 USB A.
@teamacio9043 it wouldn’t be if your 80% claim was close to being true.
Enjoying the handheld mic 👌
I did not enjoy the plosives.
If were transitioning from USB A to C just make USB C flash drives already! Why don’t we have those?! The Xapple Performax computers are going to obliterate the Mac Mini having all the ports and expansion with much more powerful x86 CPUs and discrete GPUs
Flash drives? This isn’t 2001. Plus Arm isn’t exactly behind X86, hence windows machines also starting to embrace it.
LOL-This guy is GOOD!
Subscribed 🎉
Thank you so much! ❤️
Doesn't bother me I have adapters and powered hubs 😃
Yep! There’s always options! 👍
Your microphone is not lacking a pop filter, you're lacking a high pass filter at 80 Hz and the right technique not to speak closely into the side of an SM58.
Yes. But normally it’s mounted with a foam pop filter and it’s fine - was just acknowledging the audio issue - I’ll try that 80hz filter though, thanks!
@@iCaveDave Foam is generally for wind-related-pops, not for the „spoken P“. Notice that the High pass Filter might be called „Low Cut“, „HPF“ or „Rumble“ in some units or Plug-Ins. Many even professional singers do not realize that the grille must not be touched and that the mic should be pointed to the edge of the mouth. With the nose being the „bass reflex tubes“ of the human head, do not underestimate the effect of pointing the mic to the nose, when the sound is too boomy. Greatly appreciate your video!
@@QuestionMarkComposer thanks for the tips! Much appreciated!
USB A is Just old tech - usb c with great power output and transfer speed that what we need and thats what Apple should give us. And if you hand on with usb a there are plenty cheep adapters.
100% agreed - moving to better things is the right move
Trouble is, USB-C connected devices are usually bus powered, which in some use cases leads to problems, especially with external NVMe drives not getting enough power, and this will cause unexpected disconnects. This deletion of ports has not been thought through, or maybe it has !? Don't throw away the older model, it'll be surprisingly useful
USB-C can carry way more power than the older standards, so I don’t think this is the issue, unless you mean that the old ones had a separate DC adapter too?
@@iCaveDave Yes, exactly. But also, how much power can an internal psu deliver per port ? Frequent disconnects of external SSDs (NVMe or otherwise) can always be traced back to a power issue. Try to connect external SSD drives to all ports at once, and see what happens. I can tell you that the more power it requires, the more trouble the drives will have stayig connected. I know, not a usual use-case but certainly one that should be addressed.
I’m really gonna miss plugging in my Type C female to Type A male adapter
Nostalgia…
USB A ports are still useful for low bitrate connections, my Studio connects to 2 printers, Apple keyboard, external speaker and a Logitech mouse receiver - all connected with an unpowered USB hub. Bluetooth is generally horrible. I have BT headphones which bleep between tracks, why did anyone think this is a good idea? BT speakers are worse, they announce 'battery low", 'bluetooth disconnected' and the like. Wired connections are better, no bleeps, much more reliable and low latency, no batteries to go flat. I've had BT mice that power down and require a couple of seconds agitating to wake up. Apple BT mice are much much better in that respect although an ergonomic disaster. My USB-C ports are connected to external drives where speed is beneficial, I don't want to have to waste them on printers and keyboards. But then I'm a Luddite who started playing with computers over 45 years ago and old methods die hard.
Cheap Bluetooth headphones beep and bad Bluetooth speakers announce the battery low stuff - there are plenty of good ones with decent software that aren’t like that. But of course, you can still use an unpowered hub to connect your stuff 👍
a pile of things from camera accessories to keyboards , memory sticks , chargers , ext speakers.and in plenty of cases id rather have wired than bluetooth.
That’s fine, speakers will still be fine through the Jack, USB-C will support everything else as it does now with an adapter that costs a couple of dollars
good riddance. 2 usb a ports was not enough anyway. just suck it up and buy a dongle.
What are you plugging in??
@@iCaveDave keyboard, mouse, headphone amp & dac, microphone, midi controller
Apple bluetooth major issues still and its another battery to charge and die and bad for the environment but more product sales for apple. and more by latency i want my usbc ports for those devices and USB a ports for those devices. .having said that it should be 4 USB c. Not 3
First, as I said in the video, it has 5 USB-C ports. 2 on the front. I’ve been using the current mini now as my desktop for a long while with zero Bluetooth issues with Apple’s keyboard and trackpad, no drops. And the batteries aren’t dying, I’ve had these going for near a decade now.
@@iCaveDave my bad I thought it said 3 that an addition port which is a plus and rate for apple just t he wrong kind for many people The question is is that they base or pro model with 5 usbc ports and maybe 3 in the base?
