Great episode! I have his book (second edition) and am reading it right now. I’ve been watching many videos on fairy tales and it is kind of frustrating how no one ever points to a specific version of a fairy tale to read - like you were saying a “right” version of Cinderella. I just want a link! 😂 there are too many versions out there
You are safe if you buy the ones he recommends in the back of the book. The complete Fairy Tales edited by Jack Zipes is really good. www.amazon.com/Complete-Fairy-Tales-Brothers-All-New/dp/0553382160
Oh and this publishing company New West Press does gorgeous editions of the Andrew Lang colored fairy books. nwwst.com/search?q=andrew+lang but they are also avaiable free in the public domain on www.gutenberg.org/
Greetings. This sounds wonderful. Props to you for digging into this tradition.
Greetings. If you would like a quality edition of what C.S. Lewis calls MacDonald’s “principle works” of fantasy, I have found Eerdmans Publishing to be the best. I type this will a bit of pain, as the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in the 60s & 70s stood witness to MacDonald’s greatness.
I'm in search of fundamental education. The basic knowledge: maths, physics, reading, biology. The rest is up to the individual to create. Individuals can only create the good, the beauty when they know the fundamental laws of nature, when they know the rules of nature, when they can read. Most people can't read these days. I sincerely hope I'll find it in classical education and find the roots of real knowledge.
Is Steiner education classical? Would it be fair to assume that since all schools are oblidged to follow national curriculum guidance, Steiner philosophy has been also compromised?
i love bagels
bagel man :)
So excited to listen to this interview. I have dabbled in RS but really need to commit for my child to gain all the benefits. He just gets math and loves variety. Thank you !
You ought to check out right start math's website. They have a lot of Q&A on their site. I think you can find the answer to this question on their website. Also you can contact them directly to ask.
So my question is what if your starting in 7th grade and the foundation hasn’t been laid, can you pick up this program from any level or is there a significant amount of retraining, etc.
This was amazing!
The course could also include Book of Sirach, Ecclessiastics
Maybe you could eventually digitalise these stories. Some kids whose parents might not like reading to them, could access these stories this way. Also I know some adults who would love to watch this digitally. All the best for your project
Well put great podcast
Thank you so much for sharing this class.
💜
Two of my favorite social media people coming together again!

Wow! Thank you... I had to go and buy the fairy tale collection from GM immediately.
Greetings. If you are just beginning on a journey into MacDonald’s thinking-Christian, fantasy, I would recommend beginning with the Princess and Curdie, followed by The Wise Woman - this is a kind of dual-level (child and adult) arc into an adult-level (The Wise Woman), yet with many of the same characters in variation.
This is a fantastic interview!! Jack has been my nature journaling mentor since I first discovered him in 2019 😊❤
When a half-true becomes a whole truth(Marxism), in the Catholic Church we call that a heresy.
radical!
I liked so many of Jonathan's insights: monsters as either protectors or dangers, Christ as doctor, shepherd, and so much more, fairy tales as thousands of years of condensed observations on reality, Divine Comedy as bridge between Christian and pagan stories. Thank you. For boy fairy tales, how about Steadfast Tin Soldier, the Emperor's New Clothes, Pinocchio? Thank you for great insights. God bless you both.
I vote for a retelling and illustration of George McDonald's fairy tales! Great idea!
Well, Madam, thank you for the help in the description. What a lovely interview. Especially, the probing question about the dragon's image in his background. The way he described it, was giving me some vivid imagery. About how, if a child wanders too far into the wilderness, then the dragon comes and eates them. I shall dig deep into George MacDonald, meanwhile what are your thoughts on phantastas or the golden key? Feel free to answer only if you have time.
Phantastes is excellent. It's not for children. It's definitely an adult fairy tale. The Golden Key could be read to children.
cool
Hi Adrienne, Thank you for this great interview. Now a follower of your show! Looking forward to catching up on your old episodes. Blessings and best to you and your project, Paul+++
EXCELLENT.
Symbolism doesn't fulfill the 10 commandments. Works do.
Crazy how the holly spirit inspired all these symbols in the Bible that you're just not supposed to think about

The Carriage Swing by George McDonald? I NEED to know I can't find which fairytale she's talking about?
It's in the show notes. It's called The Carasoyn. The audiobook by Naxos called Fairy Tales by George MacDonald is my favorite audiobook. The Carasoyn is in that audiobook.
It's also in the book called "The George MacDonald Scottish Collection.
thank you for this episode. I heard a mention of some ways to support parents--specifically showing them what narration looks like so they can practice it at home while doing reading with the kids at home. do you have any of those resource recommendations?
Yes. We offer classes that are usually 90 minutes to an hour. I'll be offering a narration class this fall. But, we model narration in almost all of our sessions. Also, I have a book list on our website. Know and Tell by Karen Glass is excellent on narration. Visit our website www.beautifulteaching.com
He should take "the boy who wanted to learn how to fear" as an story. Very nice.
This is good content. I agree the moniker neoclassical is apt because it is not directly connected with or a natural development of real classical education, whereas what you are doing seems to be. The former is truly an innovation in many ways, and quite a queer one. Surely Doug Wilson and The Well Trained Minds are big reasons for its success, coupled with our collective amnesia, and how counter cultural and therefore quasignostic it seems. I also agree you can't just drag and drop the historic classical education model into the here and now. Even Melanchthon, the classicist nerd (and natural educator) that he was, recognized the trivium and quadrivium needed augmenting in his day due to the demands of new sciences and humanities - even more so today! I would be interested to hear more about how you differentiate between those with greater natural aptitude for a fulsome classical education versus those who are perhaps more suited for other, more practical, disciplines, within one group. And also the emphasis or not you place on the languages.
I'm re-reading Phantastes right now, and I agree that Heather Pollington might be a great illustrator for that project, based on what I see of the illustrations for this Snow White retelling.... but first project first! Very excited about what this new publishing company will produce. Definitely backing the Snow White project!
I also just finished Phantates. I think that The Carasoyn would be a bit less of a daunting project. It is a Shorter MacDonald fairy tale. Phantastes is pretty amazing! It would be an intense and expensive project.
Monsieur Pageau is trekking. Seeing him at absolutely unexpected places.
This is excellent.

Thank you for this particular podcast on narration. I do narration in my history classes and am attempting to do some Latin narrations in my Latin class.
St. Gregory of Nazianzen said "what Christ did not assume he did not heal": Epistle 101 to Cledonius. Likely against Apollinaris.

Thank you - this was very helpful
Great job - thanks for sharing this
This discussion is fascinating and brilliant. Loved it.
Good stuff
I know I'll have to give this another listen before I fully understand everything in here. I love how you connected concepts like the logos and tao. As a psych major, I also appreciate tying in Freud. I agree that he got a whole lot wrong, but he wasn't afraid to look depraved humanity in the face and his writing shows a very deep human experience. It also goes to show that everybody is looking for something, which we find in Christ. I can't wait to hear more about building up the virtues in our students and I'm looking forward to more.
“Assembly is not craft.” This was amazing. This is an area I need to grow in and this information was super helpful.
