I've ridden both, Harley's and Indian's. I own a Springfield. Here's my take...when I'm riding, I'm riding. I'm not effing with the display, etc. After riding my 2019 Springfield for about a year, (12,000 miles), I got on a SG Special. Although the SG was fun, the only way I can describe it is, "unrefined". The "quick release" HW is garbage. The tiny wires that hold the windshield onto a Soft Tail Slim is a joke. The spools that the trunks lock onto are also pathetic. Tiny and an after-thought. It took me a week to find neutral on the SG Special and the ST Slim. Having the blinkers on separate sides is stupid as well. Can you imagine if you designed a car that way? There's no logic behind it. Until HD decides to go with a smoother engine design that doesn't rattle the bike apart, well, you can't put lipstick on a pig. All the tech in the world isn't going to make up for an engine that is stuck in the equivalent of the, "Intel 286 processor". The Indian has a shorter stroke with a fatter piston. Rather than the ridiculous, 8" push rods, the Thunderstroke has much shorter push rods, 49 degrees vs. 45 so they don't rattle the bike to little bits before you take off and, my Springfield 111 with V&H Turn-Downs sounds like a 70's muscle car. The M8 sounds like somebody build an engine from spare parts and can't quite get the timing right. From a practical standpoint, I can't think of one reason to buy a HD over an Indian, other than you look better on a HD after you crash because you were wearing nothing but a baseball cap backwards, shorts and sneakers, when the ambulance pulls up to scrape your brains off the road.

Sorry phil ,,, you are incorrect about the Harley test rides. My wife and I walked into Old Town Temecula and gave them our CDL and within ten minutes we are rolling. Riverside Harley , San Diego Harley...BIGGS and several others...every single dealership - find the Harley you're interested in we brought in our own helmets and again within ten minutes we are rolling. So please stop the test ride BS . Enjoy your Polaris , we bought the 2023 120th Anniversary Harley. PS- The Harley dealerships are way better at customer service.

These are demo group rides, completely different than walking in and going for a test ride by yourself. I currently have a Harley but have had Indians as well. Customer service is based on experience. I’ve had good and bad experiences at both Indian and Harley, it depends on the dealership, not the brand.

I really wish HD would make the Sportster S gauge an option on all the softails. I get it, some people like traditional gauges, but they have already put the LED gauges on a number of the softails at this point. Just make it an option. Ride modes, regardless of what traditionalists want to say, are helpful. They've already incorporated them into the Sportster S and the new VVT bikes. Having navigation on the gauge is a huge plus. Most guys are running their cell phones on mounts and honestly, I advise against that whenever I see it. You go down and get injured with your bike down in a ditch or 20+ feet down the road, where's your phone? Right, it's on the bike down in the ditch, 20+ feet down the road or has fallen off somewhere in between. I've seen guys go down and break legs, have a foot amputated, break their ribs etc and having your phone on your person is a heck of a lot better than having your phone out of reach if you ride solo often.

They didn't do a free for all at my Indian dealership at the last demo day. We had them for two days and you were asked to make a reservation to ride whatever bikes you were interested in. I only rode the Chief Bobber Darkhorse because it was the only bike I was interested in at the time. Now I'm wishing I'd rode the FTR. It would have been interesting to ride a completely different bike from my Bobber 20 (which I love) and have an entirely new riding experience. If I could ever find the rear pegs that is. 😉

  • @mosgor

The INDIAN FTR’ is a evocation of Indian’s dominant, FTR 750 flat-track racebike. Sharper and sportier chassis geometry than the Sportster S .- The FTR is a real step toward Indian holding a significant slice of the US sport standard segment. It will have to be the INDIAN FTR for me. If I were to choose a more cruiser-like performance bike, it would be the beautiful Indian Scout 101. Sorry Harley.

As one who is interested in one of these or a similar bike, I mainly just care about reliability and technical support from the dealer and factory. These are things that can become known only after years and years of ownership, not a ten minute test ride. Can I still get parts for the bike ten years after the purchase? 20 years? Or is their corporate culture such that I am considered to be their best friend right before the purchase, and then just a liability right afterward? Will they make excuses and tell be bullshit when their overly-sophisticated electrical systems start going wonky, as they surely will? Or will they gladly and promptly see to the proper solutions, over and over? None of these things can be examined in a test ride, nor does anyone's impression of the bike matter at all, whatsoever, to me.

The fuel gauge wasn't affected by the elevation, but by the elevation changes. Going up burned more fuel and the fuel range estimates are based on the rate burned over a given time.

Hey Phil: awesome video and commentary. I may make a suggestion of one additional road to ride, next time you get to Deals Gap. If you come in from the North end and ride the Dragon, go past Deals Gap, through Robbinsville to where 129 comes to a "T" at US74. Take a left there, heading towards Bryson City, then turn right onto 1310 (Wayah Road) towards Franklin. That's where the Nantahala whitewater put-in is located. Having ridden the Dragon, Cherohala, Hellbender and others there many times, I find that ride very satisfying. Not as intense as the Dragon, more like Cherohala, but extremely scenic with many twists and turns. I don't know why it isn't high on the "biker's list", but the Porsche and Lotus clubs know it, and run it often. There's a very nice yurt village along the way there also. ANd it's just the right length to stop in Franklin for a meal.

I regularly ride my 2021 Springfield on tight and windy NZ roads after having been a Ducati rider for many years. Apart from the obvious limited cornering clearance and the couple of weeks it took to get used to a longer wheel base and much greater weight, I would say that the handling is superb and without fault. My only issue with the Indian is the high replacement cost of the bits that are getting ground off 😅.

All the features you're talking about on the glides is a negative for me... and I have a 2017 Ultra Classic that I've owned as a new hold-over on the showroom in 2018. In 2000 I owned a RK Classic and it is still the Harley I loved most. Before that I had a 94 Heritage Softail Classic, which I loved but it had zero get up & go. I'd love another Road King, but I'd add the QD windshield and QD top case and the reason would be to have a touring Harley w/o the infotainment system and all the other electronics that can fail or give headaches. P.S. I had a first run Pan America Special and it left me stranded way too many times. That's another bike they need to remove all the electronics from, the MOCO would have an absolute beast of a bike. The Pan Am showed me how detrimental those electronics are, even though some might think of them as "extras" So, that's probably one reason why the Road Kings sell so well. It's a purist' bike.
