    I live in a village that is on what was once a Strategic route. A motorway was built as a bypass, however, the tables have turned and the village is now on the bypass for the motorway! Satnavs now direct drivers to come through the village whenever there is a delay on the motorway. The Highways Authority reduced the parking on our main road when the Lockdowns started. This provided a brilliant demonstration of the damage this could do, as the retailers depend on passing traffic to provide 80% of their customers. The residents, in turn, depend on the retailers. Inevitably, new housing estates are planned. As a member of the Neighbourhood Plan group for the village, I'm interested to know if there is someone who could use a Vision-led approach to propose ways of handling this 'Wicked-problem'.

    LTN’s are fundamentally unfair for a few reasons: Firstly, they’re arbitrary. We all live in neighbourhoods and many are busy, why should some busy neighbourhoods be graced with LTNs and others not? It’s impractical to LTN every busy neighbourhood therefore some will receive arbitrary favour and others not. That’s blatantly unfair. Secondly, LTNs merely funnel traffic elsewhere to other neighbourhoods as drivers seek different routes/rat-runs so LTNs are unfair on those impacted neighbourhoods. Thirdly, LTNs are unsustainable- our roads are a finite resource and as more LTNs are created, it reduces shrinks the space for everyone especially for those who live in areas with poor transport connections. It’s unsustainable. Fourthly, we all pay road tax but residents of LTNs get access to more roads than those who don’t…that’s unfair.

    Councils need to take the initiative. They have inflicted CPZs upon us so that off street parking is the only “free parking”. Annual permits cost £1500 and you can only use them to park in designated bays. Using pebbles, stones, slate or shingle allows drainage and looks nicer than paving. I have this and am looking into getting some shrubs for the sides.

    Great seminar. It always amazes me how backward we are in this country. Even our closest partners are ahead. M4S needs updating and I would like to see it being altered to a distance of 2m from the edge of the highway and to the offside road unless the road is straight - I have so many arguments with LPA Planners on this and its unnecessary.

    I think the Architectural qualities (Style, color, etc.), building height, and building materials are the determining factors. It could be dangerous to mix abstract expressionism, symbolism, etc. with architecture and urban design, which often leads to ugly places.

    Couldn't agree more with the final conclusions. Design should be landscape led with green orientated design. The pandemic has really rammed home the importance of healthy and active places that are pleasing and sociable, offering a break from the home environment where working and relaxing both happen now. The street and block led approach of the NMDC as mentioned, just really resonants an attempt to improve the functionality of the built environment of the 1980s with social/leisure and greening just an after thought.

    These LTNs are really a nuisance and our roads are not designed well enough for this scheme to be implemented in London. Im a delivery driver and ive seen first hand how much pollution is accumulating on our high streets just because we are all forced to divert onto the high street and sit in idle traffic. Its not working at all. The amount of times ive seen ambulances stuck and also not knowing how to get onto certain roads is shocking. I see it nearly every single day. Someone could be dying and they arent able to get to them on time! Ive seen cars reversing down residential roads because the road is blocked and they cant do a u-turn to go the other way. That in itself is very dangerous! Our roads arent coping with this and i have been doing deliveries for a good while. Ive seen the changes on the high street. People are breathing in that idle pollution from cars sitting in traffic. Its terrible. The only thing i see is that this is agenda to purposely cause more pollution and congestion so that they have the narrative to go along with extending the congestion charge further. This is going to be a money grab yet again! We pay road tax for what? If we have to pay road tax then im of the opinion that cyclists should do too! Im not against cyclist because i ride on the weekends but this whole thing is a joke. What angers me most is that they did all this during a pandemic where people are frightened to sit on a bus and even go out walking to the shops. People feel safer in their own cars but no, the government wants them to leave their cars and walk the streets which has more possibilities to potentially catch covid! The timing is so off it is really unbelievable! Instead of spending all that cash with these ridiculous blockades, it could have been better spent elsewhere! There is no compassion for the people! Im ashamed by the fact that these people run our country, the incompetence of the decisions they've made has no concern for people trying to survive this pandemic. Shame on Sadiq!!!

    How about barriers to those people who are disabled that now can't get out because the people that used to pick them up can't make enough time to pick them up. Or how about the added dangers you now put motorcycle riders in due to them being forced to drive on the busiest roads all the time. How about the people who would love to cycle but can't due to injuries but used to drive or ride a motorcycle but now find themselves either stuck in traffic all the time or having to deal with traffic much worse than ever before even during lockdown. Let's all jump on a bike great if you are physically fit and able bodied, we can't even use electric scooters which would have gone a long way towards helping those unable to pedal or find it difficult pedalling. But so long as bicycles are ok right why should you people give a toss about anyone else right.

    When you say motor vehicle you mean motor cars right? So where do motorcycles fit into all this, why are they considered so terrible? You keep saying motor vehicle why not be more accurate and explain the truth, motorcycles are much safer than cars but are always lumped into the same pot. Motorcycles kill very few each year compared to cars, in fact probably on par with bicycles, and yet motorcycles are lumped in with cars as being the road problem, no they are the solution to the car for some and would cut pollution parking and road accidents.

    Only Bicycle 🚲 Riders are enjoying these LTN ROAD CLOSURES.. Some of us are not able to ride bicycles for health reasons and walking is not always possible in the case of long distance journeys.

    But the traffic on LTN boundary roads, which in inner London are often already at capacity, has resulted in large increases in traffic and often standing traffic. The losers of LTNs: are bus users with increased journey times; those that live on or near congested main roads who suffered from increased pollution; those in LTNs whos roads facilitate the access and consequential have more traffic; the public finances due to their cost; disabled car users, particularly those using them for work; those who need a vehicle for work such as engineers and surveyors; the elderly; people who might need an ambulance to get to them quickly or need a fire engine (model filters even if opened restrict or make it difficult for emergency vehicles My local authority in inner London implemented many LTNS some adjoining each other without modelling how the traffic would work and without consulting. Well thought out LTNs may work, rushed implementation will make them unpopular and difficult to role out more of them in the future.

    Ah so you are one of the people responsible for these bonkers schemes. I'd love to know how you think disabled people will be impacted? Personally as a disabled woman I don't feel safe walking about in my area where the two highest rates of crime are antisocial behaviour and sexual violence which are also the two crimes that have increased during covid but yeah you want to make people like me less safe whilst making sure the middle class boys in lycra have even more space to piss people off.

    Amazing talks thank you for sharing this. I agree with many of the points raised. I think co-operative housing, self builds are the way forward for this country because the market is consistently delivering poor quality substandard homes backed up by many excuses.

    Putting al the museums all at the same grounds is a bad idea. The district will be overloaded during peak tourist hours and dead out of opening hours. Businesses like restaurants or bars will have a difficult time, only having a limited time window where customers are around. Other neighborhoods where a museum could be a useful addition are lacking one, since there can only be so many museums in a city of a given size.

    Excellent video. As a local authority planner that has delivered a SHELAA and subsequent site allocations, I know first hand that the current model of identifying the best land from a potentially bad lot is not the most sustainable way to enhance our settlements. Unfortunately, as the gentleman alludes to the system is geared towards delivering housing first and discussing design later (if at all). This is demonstrated in the NPPF's focus on deliverable and developable housing sites, which is thus the major concern for Local Authorities and Planning Inspectors at examinations.

    My street is now very ugly (Ironically with the "Gardens" in the name of the street). I think we have a duty to present a pleasant frontage to neighbours and those passing by. But I am a lone voice... and am moving out of my ugly street to somewhere people dont/cant pave over

      So local councils are not encouraging us to park off street? Many roads are now in a parking control zone. And parking permits have sky rocketed in the past two years. Well, for sure the next generation residents would still require the front garden to be paved and install multiples secured sheds to store up to 6 expensive electric bicycles. As most 2 floor houses with a loft conversion be letted out as HMO with two individuals occupying each floor. Sad to see houses full of bike sheds and giant multiples recycle bins taking up most small front gardens.
