I agree that this is one of the best, my favorite, I'm looking for black and white films with a little grain, do you have any to recommend? Anyway, I loved the style you edit your videos, hopefully as time goes by you gain recognition. (using the translator, sorry for any mistakes)

I haven't personally shot Portra 800, but the results from the video are interesting, I like the more close up shots you showed, also love the color reproduction. I started out with expired Kodak Gold 200, which gave me one of my favorite shots I've done, I've shot a lot of Kodak Ultramax 400 now as it's actually still readily available for a decent price at the Walgreens only a couple blocks from where I live, so it was interesting to see a direct comparison. I get a lot of film from the lab where I usually have my shots developed so next time I'm in I'll see about grabbing a roll and testing it out, my Minolta Himatic AF2 could use a little love anyway lol great video!

I just shot Portra 800 for the first time on my AE1 during my trip to the PNW earlier this month. I got some really good results!

It’s too bad many young photographers of today weren’t around during film’s heyday. In hindsight I was lucky to have been involved from the 60s, 70s and 80s when the choices were almost limitless. Film stocks like the undisputed king of color - Kodachrome - from back when the processing for it was available, Fuji Superia Reala 100, Ilford’s early stuff, Agfa, Adox, and so many more amazing films were plentiful and relatively cheap at around $2 per roll with processing and prints for another $2 or $3. I agree about the quality of the Kodak Portra line, especially the 800, but I’m sorry for you guys that the cost of film has risen so high. Film photography is such fun but the current costs have made it only accessible to those with lots of cash. Keep creating and embracing film. Magic is in your hands.

Just came across your work. I love the videos, and as someone who's getting back into film, I find this content to be gold.

Digital media is that, its cheap and disposable. Shoot 200 frames, pic the best, delete the rest. Considering most rolls of 35mm film are 24 or 36 exp, you’ll be soon slowing down as the thought of cost looms ahead. One medium format you have even less.. 8 or 12 shots per roll so you think about it before going ahead.

It comes down to scanning, Portra 800 has the best underexposure capability of any color film available today if you scan it right. You can really control the look by over or underexposing it. You can shoot it at 1600 without pushing it no problem.

I shoot Kodak gold 200 its good but not much flexibility in low light conditions. but its great in daylight!

Gold is great at everything and it's so good in 120 that I've swapped over portra for all portrait work I do!

I have a full Nikon film system, which includes my first SLR and lens purchased in 1981, and several FE2s and other glass acquired much more recently. I definitely agree with you on how deliberate film shooting is these days. However, back when film was the only option, and digital was non-existent, I shot much more like I do digital now. I took more shots of the same subject, changing perspective and bracketing in an effort to capture the perfect image. As with many photographers, if I was very happy with three to five shots out of a roll of 36 exposures, that was typical. Nowadays with film, I am more deliberate, and this results in a higher hit rate, but there are several primary reasons for this. The first is being more deliberate, and one cause of this is the high cost of film today. The second is my experience gained over the years, which includes via the use of digital cameras. I would not refer to digital as "soulless", as it has resulted in many valuable images captured on the years - it is just another tool in my bag. Several years back, I was in Washington State on a quick trip to visit my wife's aunt. While there, we decided to take a few hours to see a local landmark. Not having planned to do any sightseeing, I did not bring my DSLR system, so was taking shots with my iPhone. That's when I overheard a young lady, who was holding an entry level DSLR, comment to her dad that shooting with a cellphone was beyond her - obviously referring to me. Although I had a mind to, I did not bother to correct her. As any photographer worth his salt knows, it is the person behind the lens, not the camera, that makes the shot. From my humble perspective, I believe you are a photographer worth his salt. I just think as a content creator seeking a larger audience, it is better to avoid judgmental wording, or explain your choice of words if you truly believe that way.

Fuji x-tra superia 400 was my go to. It was the cheapest film stock and I prefered the green/magenta tones. It gave a little pop to greens and browns, with an overall neutral color balance in daylight. The original Jumanji movie is what comes to mind when it comes to the color tones it produces. I don't know if they use the same formula anymore (heard that it became repackaged Kodak gold during the pandemic), and it definitely isn't the cheapest and most ubiquitous color film that can be found, it seems that title goes to Kodak ultramax or Gold. I went mostly digital several years back and haven't bought Superia 400 since 2019.

Mainly use portra for more serious shoots. But Gold is becoming my Go-to! I do enjoy ultramax when I want colours that are a bit more punchy though (ektar is out of my budget for just casual shooting).

Yep.... me too. I keep Gold 200 and Kodak 400 most of the time because they work pretty good for me. What I find I most hate about photography is having to deal with the stinking computer. Truly, I HATE dealing with computers.

Mechanic dials for most imporant settings is what makes me enjoy film photography more. With my canon new f-1 I shoot only in manual mode but with my digital canon it's pain in the ass to manually change settings and automatic modes don't look good most of the times. My experience with the digital is constant fighting with poor UX in menus, terrible ergonomics and photoshoping every image because it doesn't look good enough :/

I have a K-5 DSLR that I hardly use anymore, but my analogue flock is quite satisfying to me: K1000, KM, KX, K2, MX, LX and 2 MEs. Love these machines to bits...

I like the film cameras. I picked up a Minolta SRT 101 Wednesday. Time to load it and run a roll through. Digital has its place but film is what I grew up with, so I like to shoot the film cameras as often as I can. <edit> Minolta update....the mirror is locked up. I guess it's on its way to the fix-it shop!<edit> update to the update... I thought I'd tested it all ways... but then I found this 101 camera has a mirror lock up, later ones do not.... all is well, the camera works well. User malfunction. 😁

the best thing is shoot enough to finish the roll... and get it processed. Fun to see how things work out.

Last week I was out. What I thought to be a 36 exposure roll.... stopped at 24. Oh well. At least I was only two miles from my house!!
