After doing a few quick checks and then power up unfortunately it doesn't boot. So now I'm going to see if I can find some schematics and then we're going to start doing some troubleshooting on this system. Thanks to Jonathan Update: After replacing the 2114 RAM it now boots. The 65xx Chips are all okay. 6502 MOS 1Mhz CPU (Rockwell) 6522 Complex Interface Adapter (Synertek)

You don't need special routines for that. Google "4tH compiler", choose Sourceforge, tab "Code" and navigate to "trunk-4th.src-apps-basic". The program you're using is sinewave.bas - but with integer trig functions: *SIN(), COS(), TAN().* the sinwav2.bas and sinwav3.bas don't even need those. You can even emulate a whole slew of transcendental functions in integer math, but in practice you need 64 bit wide integers. See fraction.bas if you're interested.

I'm intensely jelly. An old friend gave me his old SYM 1 with an ASR33 teletype. Eventually tossed the tty (probably shouldn't have but it wasn't practical at the time to hold onto it and was kind of self-conscious about firing it up whenever M&D were trying to watch TV one floor below me) and eventually donated the SYM1. Kicked myself later for not finding a way to do serial connection via another machine like my C64. Almost wired up an alphanumeric keyboard and created my own keyboard driver, but reliable program storage was a b***h. If I recall though, I think one jumper setting will allow you to boot directly to a serial connection, bypassing the onboard keyboard. One fun thing I did get working was the example oscilloscope marquee-style display in of the most dog-eared sym1 manuals.

For newbies, but C is marvelously compact compared to assembly and BASIC, and of course you've futzed with assembly, you can appreciate C. And possibly look back in anger at the cruel tutelage of the Pascal-mongers (who are probably quite an endangered species these days)

@@RoyAntaw - If you can't see it drawing an arc in a darkened room; Then that would suggest the break-down is internal somewhere, not a lot in the HV path :/ On the other hand if there is a issue in the low-voltage supply side, then that could do it too But the fact you can hear the fly-back "complaining" make me think it's in the HV path somewhere. But ... I'm nowhere near an expert on these kinds of things ;) Perhaps a meter on the low voltage supply side of the fly-back? See if something is dragging the supply down? Careful with you fingers though ... those things can "bite" quite hard

You could totally make it sing by having a control voltage into the pitch circuit. You can get that control voltage from an Arduino or synthesizer with a CV output jack. If you ever get it to work, you should totally have it sing “Daisy Bell”, just like the old IBM computer!

I'm impressed. I really didn't think anyone would have bothered with a decent DOS emulator for OpenVMS. I was exposed to VMS shortly after DOS. While I preferred DOS and later *NIX, I really did like the versioning filesystem they used. I liked the window manager, though I couldn't tell if it was TWM or MWM. Is SoftWin limited to 640x480 and standard mode, or is it similar to DOSBox?

The thing I miss about these old systems is the social part. You could run a system status and see dozens of people and projects blasting away in timeshare, sense the system start to creep as new batch loads came on. You could message and collaborate with people online, hold late-night bullshit sessions. A sort of late-70's social media. I even once saw a continuous system status display being used as a marquee to announce scores in a campus basketball game.
