    Your pillars that come with your bottom metal or the pillar spec by manufacturer set your correct height for proper function of the action. If your ejection port or tang height is low/high etc then you must modify the stock.

    Hi, could you please tell me how you define the surface on which you index the action to be sure it is horizontal and aligned with the median axis of the stock ? Thank you

    • @capersprecision2478
      @capersprecision2478 Před 16 dny

      Generally speaking if the inlets are straight, with the way I do it using the bottom metal, the action really has no choice but to be horizontal with the stock. However, I have seen where they are not and I have a hand clamp with a level glued to it that I put on the butt of the stock. I use a good level across the forend, then place the clamp with level being sure not to move it, put a barrel clamp level on the barreled action and then just make sure it lines up after I tighten the action screws.

      @hugtango Před 16 dny

      @capersprecision2478 than you very much for having taken the time to reply. I have to bed a rem700SA in an HS stock, I'll keep in mind your explanation and use minimal contact point between the action and the aluminium bedding and clamps to align everything. I think I'm gonna go for probed 2000 kit.

    A nice tip to eliminate the risk of stressing the reciver, esp with heavy barrels. Before making the primary bedding, you create a support bedding in the barrel channel. Mask of two areas in the channel with tape (and release agent on barrel!) then put epoxy there, install barrel with stock screws and metals just like from factory. Let it harden. When you later do the full bedding job you can fix the system by the barrel instead of the action - you can still use the stock screws rear and its recommended to get correct rotational and longitudal centering. when the primary bedding is done, remove the supports. If the system is heavy and you DONT use the support, you will just bend the reciver from the barrel and tang/rear screw working against the front action screw.

      @capersprecision2478 Před měsícem

      I have had great success with modeling clay with graphite on it in the forend. Same principle, I completely agree you have to be careful about inducing stress in that rear tang. Thanks for the tip.

    I defy anyone to bed a rifle like a pre 64 model 70 Winchester. You're bedding the action. Nobody beds barrels anymore.

    • @capersprecision2478
      @capersprecision2478 Před 3 měsíci

      I guess I’m not tracking, I don’t bed forends under the barrel. Now on some synthetic stocks you do need to stiffen them up but you aren’t bedding the barrel. I think you might be talking about the over flow in front of the recoil lug? Most of the time I clean that up in the mill and only the action is left bedded. Sometimes I do leave the over flow depending on the application and have never seen an issue, but that’s rare.

    Great idea to put the q-tip on the pick! A tip for you is to come back a few hours later (time will vary depending on product used, humidity etc.) and break the action screws and retighten. This way the epoxy will be set enough to be stable, but is not fully hardened yet, and if you got epoxy on the threads and not enought relief agent, you won't epoxy the bolts into the action.

      How much velocity is a lot? I’ve been doing testing on shorter and shorter barrel lengths, I have not seen anything over a 150fps drop case in point, my 7mm RM, shoots a 180 out of a 17 1/2 inch barrel at 2850fps and puts a 3 inch group at a 1000 yards, what more do you need? So for a platform to be compact, able to add a suppressor and still only be 24conchs is huge for my clients.

    The PRC are great cartridges, all of them. Only issue are the 'clickers'. If you handload and run 'em hot, evenrually the cases will grow at the .200 line and FL sizing dies will no longer be able to size them. In my old barrel, the problem showed up in 4x fired ADG brass. The fix is to run a finishing reamer that opens up the back portion of the chamber to .535" for the 300 PRC. If you run factory ammo, you will obviously never run into this issue. Other than this, i am very happy with my 300 PRC. Got a new Bartlein CF barrel spun on and it's a tack driver. Thanks for sharing. Great build and awesome shooting!

      @@capersprecision2478 thanks for replying. I am not averse to trying other brass. I just appreciate the fact that ADG is very consistent and requires no neck turning. I reamed my chamber by hand to open it up so using ADG brass is a non-issue for me. Thank you for your perspective.

    • @capersprecision2478
      @capersprecision2478 Před rokem

      Well it depends on a few things, as rule of thumb it starts at $200 if I’m building the entire rifle. It goes up from there, depending on the fit of the stock…some are better than others and that has to be addressed, Then does it need pillars, if they aren’t installed, and if it’s a wood stock…yes it needs them. Do I have to custom mow the pillars…so on and so forth. Hope that helps a little.

    • @capersprecision2478
      @capersprecision2478 Před rokem

      Everything is a trade off, you sacrifice a little velocity for a shorter barrel which equals less weight. The big thing is making sure whatever bullet you are going to run is stable with expected velocity and twist rate. That all being said I took my 7mm Rem Mag to 17 inches, and have had no issues. If I was building one, I’d say 18 inches and the barrel needs to be actually measured for twist rate, not just relying on factory stamp.
