I was totally FLOORED by the speed of my US passport on-line renewal. It took about an hour to do on-line, including fixing my hair and shave to take a photo for the upload. I submitted it in the evening and on the morning of the 11th day, I got my passport in the mail by USPS. 10.5 DAYS. This is a US government agency. NOTHING in the US government operates efficient or fast. THIS was a total surprise. GOOD JOB US passport service !!! The on-line service is under beta testing so they will only take a limited number of "customers" per day starting at around noon each day. If you cannot get in, then try another day. Once you are logged in, it will save all data when you have to get away, to do other things like take a photo, and then resume later. EXCEPTION: You have to have a US government identification log in account to ID yourself. If not, THAT will take some time to set up. I got it done a couple years back when I applied for Social Security. I researched other options like mail in or do it live at a local office. They are a PITA. In person at local office is my next choice because I do not have to rely on the USPS. When you submit the application, to a human being, you know they received the application.
