How To Self Install Double Ended Dreadlocks - Part Two - The Top Half
Hi! I’m Serafina, dread artist and small business owner. I’ve been asked a lot of times how I install my own dreadlock extensions, so I have taken the time to document the process for you!
It takes me about 4-6 hours to do my full head, depending on the amount of dreads I want installed. In this video, I started with 21 dreads previously installed, and finished with a total of 53 double ended wool dreadlock extensions.
I also create the dreadlocks, you can find my current ready to ship sets available here:

Test warm up song on my sisters new silk and steel strings. This is just a rendition my brother and I came up with 10 years ago, that we still play together around the campfire.
When I install my de dreads there's too much slack at the root, no matter how tight I start the braid....any advice? Caucasian fine hair here👋
It’s not how tight the braid is that matters most, but I find that if you pull the hair at an angle that the dread is not going to normally sit while doing the twist and braid, it can cause unevenness, pulling, or even slack on the root. So if your hair is going to be down, braid it in that direction. If you’re pulling it up or back, follow that direction for the most even install!
The top is always the part I struggle with! Thank you for this 😊
Glad it was helpful!
How many De strands did you use for a full head?
OMG I can't explain how happy I was to find this video! I have been wearing dreads for a year now but I still have issues with my install thank you so much for showing how you do the back of your head!!! And the tip of how you did the last 2 pieces in the front was so helpful!!!!! I can't thank you enough!!!!!
I am so glad I could help!!!
How do you manage back? I struggle until I quit.
Just lots and lots of practice! I do this so often that I can almost do it in my sleep by this point 😅
I can not seem to get mine tight enough against my scalp
CAN I BUY SUM JUST LIKE YOUR FROM YOU? ESTY TAKES OVER A WEEK I NEED THE YESTERDAY ..
I couldn't find a single tutorial on how to section your own hair, thank you for making this!
Glad I could help! 🖤
Is that heavy?
Oh no, not at all. Wool dreads are much lighter than synthetic, it’s my personal preference.
I don't know how you do it...I tried so many times and I can't...😢
Oh it just takes practice! My first few installs were pretty messy, you just keep at it and eventually you’ll get the hang of it, I promise! ☺️☺️
Hi, how many de dreads did you use?
This set was 53 dreads in total.
❤ thank you ❤
Loved this tutorial so relaxing u made it look so easy. I'm Caucasian never installed locks before just ordered a big batch from temu now I can't wait to get started. I will tag u when done thanks for inspiration. Xx
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck!
Have you found these actually help your hair grow? How stressed do I have to be to geth the sections perfect? I was so stressed about getting my sections perfect it took me 30 mins to do one 😆
It’s helped my hair maintain its health while growing out, definitely! Protective styles like this are very helpful for keeping your hair healthier than if you’re styling it daily, using heat, or chemical treatments. I used to be very meticulous with the sectioning at the beginning of my journey, but I’ve learned that it’s less important than how it feels on my head! It just takes practice and patience.
How do you prevent the bands from snapping? Every morning I'm reinstalling at least 5 to 10 braids. I sleep with a bonnet. I love having my dreads but it's a pain to redo so many every day. Is there another way besides using rubber bands?
You can use thread to secure your hair, I just find natural rubber bands work best for me and my hair! You can find them on Amazon.
How many DE did you use to do your full head?
This install took 53 DE! I average between 45-55 depending on the set and the look I want to achieve.
So helpful! ❤ simple and effective! Thanks!
You're a magician... You make this look easy... Almost relaxing🤣 can't even plait my hair without getting in a pickle😂 x
You can do it! It just takes practice! Lots and lots of practice ☺️☺️
That was so helpful thank you!!!!❤❤
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck!
Thank you for this video! The top half rarely gets talked about. This is an important step. ❤
I’m so glad you found value in my video! I appreciate it so much! ❤
Really well done x
Those look great!! Your video is going to help me so much.
Glad I could help! <3
How many did you use for the full head?
I ended up using 43 for this installation, these dreads are on the thicker side so I use less than I normally would for an average set.
Thank you so much this part of your video showed me just what to do with the top of my head at a pace I could understand
You are so welcome!
Hiya, was wondering how short is to short to put dread extensions in? Also is it okay to leave the fringe out
I've left my bangs out in previous installs, it's completely fine to do whatever your heart desires! Typically hair will need to be at least 3 inches to get a good wrap around the dread, but that also depends on the thickness of the dread as well. Thinner dreads will be easier to wrap short hair around.
You make it look so easy
I’ve been creating and installing my own dreads for several years now, it just takes practice and patience ☺️
Thank you so much for this ! I just got my first set, and just installed them.. i will be redoing them in a few weeks before an event because i know i didnt lay them properly 😅. This was so helpful. Do you have any tips for getting them to lay flat? My top steand likes to kinda stick up a bit. And for a beginner would it be easier to toe everything off first, and then braid (taking any clips, or rubber bands out of hair as each section is braided) or would this be easier to just section as i go ? And how do you know if theu are to tight or to loose? I had a few i had to undo and rebraid because they HURT but also have some that are not very close to the scalp (my husband braided them lol). I am a baby at this.. never had them before... so any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Are your dreads synthetic or wool? I have a little tip in there about spritzing the woolies and rolling them a little to get them to lay down better. Synthetics are a bit more difficult, sometimes you need to boil them and hang them to dry for them to reshape the way you want. For the sectioning, I usually just do rows at a time because that’s what works for me personally! Just takes patience and practice, darling. Keep at it and you’ll be a master in no time! Best of luck!
Ive had my dreads for three months and instal them myself but you have given me a great tip to spray them, it hopefully stop all the little fly aways that pull and hurt so bad so thank you xxx
This makes me so happy!! I’m glad I could help!
thank you, super nervous to try, will be using this step by step.....
I’m excited for you! Let me know if you have questions!
How many dread are needed???
For this install, I used a total of 43 double ended dreads, but it just depends on the size of your head, the thickness of your natural hair, and wearing preference! Average is between 40-50 for a full head.
How long do they last in for?
@@ParisV1990 I can comfortably leave my wool dreads in for 4-5 weeks. My hair grows pretty fast with them in so I’ll take them out and do a full scalp cleanse before reinstalling.

Hi, you look gorgeous! How many dreads you've used for the entire head?
Thank you!! I’ve used 43 dreads for this set!
@@SerafinaTreasuresCohi there just to clarify 43 double ends pieces or 43 dreads in total? Sorry if that's not the right terminology 😅
43 double ended dread extensions, so only 43 sections and braids to do :) It will end up having 86 individual ends as 1 DE = 2 dread ends
Beautiful
This was so helpful, doing my first install next week! You look awesome, keep it up!
Thank you so much!
@Courtnie Alcorn this set is 48 in total!
Great job Rosi!! Thumbs up!!! :D
