Remarkables Arch and Bicheno Blowhole
Today I travel to the Remarkable Cave, a truely magnificent natural wonder, however then I need to cover a fair amount of ground to keep to schedule, so the next stop is quite far away at Bicheno Blowhole, where you can also spot a little penguin making its home amongst the rocks, along with some crabs and other sea creatures.

    This is not a solution, it's a workaround with a slightly better result. The solution is this: Gears Icon, I Movie section, PCM Recorder Link, Camera Rec. Volume (press right arrow on D pad). Choose "Inoperative" with up/down arrows and click "OK" to confirm. It disables additional audio signal processing and simply uses the external microphone and disables both audio processing and the internal microphones. The audio quality is now comparable to a mobile digital recorder like Tascam or Zoom with external microphones. czcams.com/video/3VaGeIBY3wE/video.html

    Of course, if you need to drop the levels to eliminate the hiss, you need a powered and fairly hot microphone to make up for that. Trying to use a passive microphone on an Olympus camera is a recipe for disaster.

    • @strayspondonicle8888
      @strayspondonicle8888 Před 6 lety

      function of not having enough control on the microphone gain settings, you won't have enough control over the input gain to balance out the overall volume and boosting it in post will just make it worse.

    • @chech1965
      @chech1965 Před 6 lety

      So essentially the mic is a paperweight.

    • @strayspondonicle8888
      @strayspondonicle8888 Před 6 lety

      well no, the camera's internal mic processing skills are lacking. With that mic, turn your gain UP until you hit reasonable levels for volume without peaking. That mic works great on cameras (or even phones) that have decent audio-processing capability and will still sound better than the built in mic on correct settings, you will just still have the hiss.

    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 Před 4 lety

      Try using a powered microphone. If you drop the levels in the camera to eliminate the hiss, you need to make up for it with a hotter mic signal going in. The Rode VideoMic Pro is the obvious choice, but if your budget is a little tighter, I own and recommend the Takstar SGC-598. Rode did some brilliant marketing by putting their name on all the foam covers so everyone would think that's what all the cool CZcams pros are using. But there are many great choices out there for microphones without the Rode Tax.czcams.com/video/p9rrr3l3yuA/video.html If you're trying to record people speaking, you might want to try a wireless lav mic kit because that brings the mic closer to the speaker. You can often get better audio from a cheap lavalier mic than you can with an expensive shotgun mic farther away from the speaker. czcams.com/video/as3TmHJWunk/video.html The Saramonic MixMic is a truly interesting choice because it's more than a shotgun mic...it's a way to add XLR inputs to a camera that only has a 3.5mm input. www.adorama.com/sarmixmic.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwwYP2BRBGEiwAkoBpAiflvhYzAkGpurn9hTOb-ny6qSavNXqT6u_mtuiLvbMQBPj3TLp9LxoCB7IQAvD_BwE&

    Hello Tasmania...Great informative video...I will try your method. I use a stereo microphone, into the Zoom H1 as a preamplifier/buffer/(second recorder backup), and its output goes via a Y-splitter to the camera and headphones. Greetings from Denmark...Jakob.

    • @strayspondonicle8888
      @strayspondonicle8888 Před 7 lety

      hey Jakob, If you've got a zoom H1, you'd be better off recording the audio on the zoom H1 itself, which is a much higher quality recorder and syncing it back together in post. I'm not sure if you can internally record on the zoom H1 AND output the audio to the camera, but doing so would make it even easier to sync in post. There are numerous tutorials on syncing audio in post and it's pretty simple to do, even in iMovie! For iMovie: drag the audio clip over the entire video clip and adjust it until you can only hear one, clean audio track, then mute the video's original audio track and export the entire clip. Re-import the newly synced audio/video clip and cut your project using that. It saves you messing up the audio once you start cutting your project.

    • @jakobhovman
      @jakobhovman Před 7 lety

      Hello hello again...IMovie sounds interresting and easy...but I am on a PC. The H1 records and outputs (in sync) to the camera. Sound in camera is fine for normal use. If I need better quality, I will for sure use the H1 audio and sync it. .

    • @strayspondonicle8888
      @strayspondonicle8888 Před 7 lety

      My point is that iMovie is a pretty basic editing program and that it still supports syncing audio, so your equivalent windows based software can probably do the same. For the most part, if you lower the camera gain to -10, then adjust the H1's levels to compensate, the audio should end up pretty good, unless you're in a very quiet room! It's certainly nice and simple syncing the audio in camera :)

    • @jakobhovman
      @jakobhovman Před 7 lety

      Hello hello again...In "the world of electronics" we have a saying: "The best preamplifier is a short piece of wire"... I will for sure lower and monitor the levels of the cameras audio recording. I am planning to buy the HLD-8 grip...it has a minijack headphones out.Greetings for now... Best of luck with the wild Tasmanian nature...Jakob.

      @@strayspondonicle8888 Any external (even a lavalier) mic connected to either zoom H1 or Tascam, gives an excellent recording i.e. better than w/o a mic.
