Long version of Tanner Service video at Courtside Club in 1991: czcams.com/video/OlErdrvHq5I/video.html
I played the Transamerica Open pre-qualifying at this club around 1986. That was the pro tourney that used to be at the SF Cow Palace but later moved to San Jose (in the arena). Also had my junior teams play Courtside's jr teams in the 90's. Man, time flies!
Had you played a year later, you could have played or seen Michael Chang at the 1987 TransAmerica Open qualifiers at Courtside Club. I happened to watch the qualifiers in center and adjacent court. Who is this kid? Just 15 at the time, and running everything down and running opponents ragged. I kept returning to watch all his matches. One opponent simply gave up, not even trying to run for the court-court pass. Literally. But the experienced 30+ yo journeyman player beat Chang in the finals. Of course, we know what happened one year later! Too bad I didn't take videos of Chang qualifiers! Here's the short version of Tanner's explosive serve. Enjoy. czcams.com/video/se2f5q4ewUI/video.html
@@CahalanTennis Nice! I was in the tourney with other Foothill players. I played on the sunken court & exited early due to a groin pull and bad ankle. It was fun for us local college players to play those pre-qualy tourneys. I sat in Jim Courier's seats with a friend when he played Michael Chang in San Jose in the 90's. Courier was winning until someone yelled out, "Chang is a wimp!" Chang aced Courier on the next service & pointed up at the person, then went on to win the match.
It works! Excellent tips. Thanks
Leconte had a similar serve to Tanner.
Peach Bottom, as in Peach Bottom BWR nuclear reactor? I resolved startup issues with my control system enhancement around 1974 for the stream turbine pressure control system.
@@CahalanTennis yeah, yeah, that’s the ticket.
Peach Bottom BWR still running? They were huge. Each with four 30” Dia high pressure steam lines at 1050 psi and 2.2 lb/cu ft., causing streamline resonance that I resolved via electronic compensation. I walked along one segment during startup. 20 ft tall streamline stop valves. Control room just like in The China Syndrome. My intro to the real world (vs competer simulation)
Thanks. Hand held with vintage 8mm Nikon and stabilized some via software after conversion to mp4

Having a surprising number of views of my warmup serves, here is a One Minute clip hitting my 77 yo serve in game play, hitting harder, along with striking two of my patented Extended Two-Hand Backhands (E2HBH) in the last two points shown. OK, not really patented, but my unique two-hander invented in 2008 for a 3.5" longer effective swing radius. czcams.com/video/b4JLg4Z80cg/video.html FYI, the unique E2HBH grip is shown in this video of my two-handers (which complements my 1HBH and lefty FH) in 2014, when I was plant-based 68. It's great for shorter players to maintain a long swing radius. With my current 27.5" racquets, choking up just 1/2" on the handle gives the equivalent swing radius of a normal 27" racquet! (vs. 24" racquet) czcams.com/video/NRw4a3ANKfg/video.html
Good progress. Be careful to not open up the palm when serving
Good point. I wasn't keeping the palm down during warmup. Its better when I do. Thanks!
I like the ice cream scoop finish, but it’s harder to get super loose at contact to perform- for greater spin and slice.
Hello Darch your tossing arm should be using your shoulder only and release eith finger tips. Also try to bring your hitting arm a little further back or face more sideways so you can get that extra power. Your missing about 15mph pn that serve.
Thanks for tips. I’ve been experimenting with the toss, stance, and bend lately. If the toss is a little more forceful until the arm locks straight, it’s easier to keep pointed skyward longer, and not bring down too early. I was using a more extreme sideways stance until this week for more shoulder rotation into the ball. I’ve also tried to cock my hitting arm more, ahead of final back loop and to my right. Still trying to improve at 77+ !!! czcams.com/video/10aP4MvdAmw/video.htmlsi=kTHcpdFVc4fe-5SW
Those were just warnup serves to get loose and coordinated. My lefty serve is a work in slow progress. So difficult to bring the hitting arm up for final loop. In the video of the subsequent game play, it’s slightly off screen, but note my lefty forehand rip at 40 sec to opposing player (fmr USC Trojans varsity 30+ yrs ago). I’m a 3.0+ player.
Try out the ice cream cone toss that'll help with a consistent ball toss. People tend to throw the ball up but you're actually trying to place the ball in the right zone.@@CahalanTennis

Yes. Thanks
This was taken 4 years after Michael Chang at 15 held the same court during the Transamerica Qualifiers He fell to a journeyman in the final round, but the next year made the main draw - and won the whole at Tournament! Amazing.
The perfect Vic Braden serve the way he would teach it the secret no stopping in the throwing motion ball toss just high enough . Great kit from the 90s miss those days thanks for the upload.
No. Vic thought Roscoe was definitely the most biomechanically efficient server in tennis, but there are slight difference between Vic’s ideal model and Tanner’s serve.
There will always be differences vic always mentions Roscoe 👍
@@user-bm2oe8xd6u well you’re the one who claimed it was “perfect”. I talked about Roscoe’s serve with Vic - and his analysis of it a quite a bit.
@@datacipher Vic thought , that Pancho Gonzalez had most effektive serve. Pancho had just little higher toss
Lost to Jimmy Connors in the Finals of the 1971 NCAA Tennis Singles Championship... Over 50 years ago 😮
lol. A multiple pro title holder and grand slam champion but you decided to cite a college tennis loss! Bizarre thinking. He also lost in the QF of the Podunk junior Kmart under 12 tournament 60 years ago.
Brilliant video, a rare and important principle I think
I always liked this guy
Legend 🏆
Look at that a$$hole waiting at the service line
Toma just turned 90, and still hits hard. And still works part time as civil engineer in building codes and structures. Amazing. Drives long distance without getting sleepy. And more.
Nice. One handed backhand is the kings backhand. Everything else is minor leagues.
That was 2 years ago in 2021, when Super Toma was only 88. He is still in great physical condition: plant-based nutrition, no prescription meds, extremely low BP and heart rate, no joint pains, and runs to pick up balls, never tired. That's big league!
Depressing to watch.
Very good ❤

Now that you mentioned, but that bouncing around and strutting sharply after hitting the mid court winner vs the little people had that exact appearance. Hahahaha
Mr. Long is a sneaky old fox.
His serve is wonderful to watch he makes it look so easy ..
i use simular technique and my serve became much better. there is another possibility : shoulder rotation , knee bend, but it is much more difficult
very impressive, wonder how hes doing now

oh man.. I knew from the those early days. Rosco Tanner. Was like the Goran Ivanaswick the big Croatian server. '
Roscoe still had a monster serve at 40, as shown at the clinic. I think this video is the only one showing his serve close up with modest resolution.

By 2014 my E2HBH stroke had become very solid, and I hardly hit 1HBH, at the time to avoid re-injury of elbow. This video shows the high contact point near peak bounce, and the reverse backloop from low to high, striking fairly flat at contact, with added lift from rising at the knee and hips through the contact zone. czcams.com/video/NRw4a3ANKfg/video.html Until I made this video, I hadn't even realized that my backloop had changed from standard high-low-high topspin to low-to-high flat at contact. In other words, my swing and follow through did what come natural, dependent on the height of ball contact. In this video, my follow through does finish upward around the shoulders or even higher. It all depends ... Do what comes natural.
Good job Darryl!
Thanks Darryl, miss you guys a lot!! Just wondering if the 5.3 refers to stiffness of the racket? I couldn't find the answer for this.
Wilson’s old stiffness indicator. 2.7 was super stiff. 8.0 was super soft. However with a stiffness RA 70, the 5.3 is relatively stiff, not medium flex RA65 or flexible RA 60
@@CahalanTennis Thanks a lot Darryl..Hope you are all doing well. My best to everyone...Cheers!!
