A tribute to Sidney Bechet by Bob Wilber (Soprano Sax) & George Wein (piano) in 1999. "On the Sunny Side of the Street" is a 1930 song composed by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. "Indian Summer" is an American standard originally written as a piano piece by the prolific composer Victor Herbert. Great. Well done Noel.
Always nice to play some of these big band arrangements adapted for a small band.
A nice theme and well played.
Thanks Roly. Yes, quite different from our normal stuff. Reminds me of Shanghai in the 30's ballrooms.
I dont' really care for the breakneck tempo. I much prefer the original version.
Thanks for your input.
What a voice! Always in tune, great projection, and fine timing. Clark was definitely a true pearl. I have always thought the best big band vocalists (with the exception of Frank, Desmond, and Fran Warren) really came out of the 1950's, like Julie London, etc.
Yes, I agree, a very good vocalist but just did seem to disappear off the scene and no albums on her own as a lot of vocalists did do in the 1950's. But at least we have these clips of her with the Ray McKinley - Glenn Miller Orchestra. Thanks as always for your comment.
@@CCJazzmen Yep. I hope you don't mind. I will give you this link which you should get a total kick out of, Benny Goodman with Donna Musgrove. This lady is still around. Her singing career never went anywhere, unfortunately, but she ended up as a voice teacher and directing school choruses for years. But another lady with impeccable talent that never went far as a performer. czcams.com/video/CyRdSVYyaDY/video.html
Who's the drummer?
Louis Bellson. Thanks for your interest.
What a tempo!
Thanks for your comment.
Great version of a great old song, cheers to the Soprano Summit, and the legacy of Sidney Bechet❤😊
Agree. Thanks for your comment.
Johnny Desmond still had a rich and full voice and he knew how to use it. I miss this era of class and beauty in our pop culture of today.
I quite agree, plus a great song. Thanks for your comment.
What a beautiful and wistful tune. I really love how Patty develops this song with the orchestra. Would have been interesting to see how she developed as a singer, if only the pop world wasn't so radically changing at this time and limiting opportunities for Big Bands and true singers.
Great comment, she is a very good vocalist, but seems to have just disappeared after this.
Never heard this before. Very clever musical evocation of a train journey. As I first was getting into a jazz I found a pal at work, Bobby Hogg, played lovely blues and boogie-woogie piano. I loved all that and of course he played Honky Tonk Train Blues. Bobby's father-in-law was the great Charlie Smith, Tyneside jazz and session guitarist.
Thanks Roly. Interesting little piece of North East jazz history.
Such a lovely melody and a really nice job of the playing and recording it.
Much thanks Roly. Neds can be a difficult place to record in plus on this fun session no rehearsals but the boys and girls do read quite well.
Lui et Slam Stewart !
Year?
@@TomGrubbe 1961
Well done! I've always loved that Jerry Gray arrangement for GM's AAF. The bass trumpet covers a lot of ground when you have just three brass!
Always a great number and Dodo is becoming a bit of a star on his bass trumpet. !
Great tune -- glad to learn about it's source, as it wasn't familiar to me. Nice to hear bass trumpet in there!
@Trombonology Something a little different that we play now and then, a little local culture.
Bit of a stylistic mixture applied to good old "Chicago" here, with a little modern, some trad and kind of a burlesque ending. Patty was a good vocalist for the Miller band of that time.
Yes, she was, and no albums featuring her vocals ?
Ah, a classic from a great Brit band. I love those train numbers!
Quite a responce on the VCT train show..Of course one of the great british bands.
Sounds absolutely lovely! I can imagine that recording at Ned's might pose some challenges. Interesting that here the trombones are playing the counter line instead of the muted trumpets as on the original GM record.
@Trombonology You are right, this arrangement was arranged for the Ted Heath Big Band in the UK. Ted loved his trombones and on those arrangements 4 were used, we also used 4 trbns that day but one is cut off on the video (unfortunately the only lady in the big band) you can just see the top of her trombone close to the bar. 😅
Bear in mind, the number is written: PEnnsylvania 6-5000
Absolutely marvellous! Glenn would have been very proud of this!
The Best trumpet player ever... wow... !!
Actually it’s Antti not Andy.
Thanks for the correction.
@@CCJazzmen no prob and greetings from his son! 😄
Thank you for uploading this. Really love this version
She also appeared in an Abbott and Costello movie called “Pardon My Sarong”, doing a snazzy little dance number.
Someone should locate and post a clean copy of Nan singing “Ain’t Misbehavin’”, which was filmed for the WWII Armed Forces as a sort of reminder to servicemen not to be tempted into sexual encounters with foreign women. I saw it on CZcams many years ago, but it was removed. She’s suggestively in a nightgown in a bedroom, her singing is delicious, and it’s all quite alluring and magical.
Great selection of clips showing what the band can do and the (as always) great atmosphere at the venue.
As always a fun session, but with the big band only 6 times a year, no rehearsals and fingers crossed that it works.
Aka doggy6 🎉
Thank's ! ♥
What a versatile outfit! I sure wish we had a house band like that where I live.
We would love to play for you one day..
Great to see a clip from this momentous occasion ... swingin' fun!
It was such a good session. Thanks again for your comment.
All those years! Amazing. Congratulations to all involved.
Make you wonder where all those years go. Thanks Roly.

Ha! "Felix the Cat" -- well, naturally Tiggerr would spin that one! He's got good taste.
He loves to be sleeping amongst my records. He was a stray and we have had him 6 months and today he is one year old. A swinging cat..

Best of the Glenn Miller ghost bands. Thanks for your comment.
