The mayor doesn't have the awareness to realize their city's entire transportation system and entire development pattern was the result of federal and state government programs to build highways, restrict land-use, and force car dependency. Your whole way of life was imposed on you by idealist bureaucrats from Washington DC in the 1950s, and you've wrongly interpreted this as your city's character and desires. Now the state is trying to loosen up its grip on you and you wrongly interpret that as an attack on your way of life. The mayor is unbelievably dim.

You guys love to whine about homelessness and young adults living at home but when the solution to the problem involves dense development then all of a sudden the "character of our communties" matters more then homeless tents filling up sidewalks.
