The origins of Topic Records, which has its roots in the Workers Music Association, can be traced back to 1939. In those days, the organisation fostered a belief that music should be used as a tool of revolution, in a cultural and educational sense, and that folk music, passed down through the generations, above all, gave 'a voice to the people'.
During the past 84 odd years, Topic Records has built a deserved reputation for not compromising the nature of its work or that of the independent spirit of the artists it represents. Irrespective of fads or fashions, Topic has not simply survived, but it has grown and flourished too -- proof, if any were needed, that 'grass roots' interest in traditional music, the artists and the label itself, has remained constant and strong.

Martin Carthy - Scarborough Fair
Martin Carthy's debut self-titled album is re-issued on LP on 23 February 2024, pre-order here: martincarthy.lnk.to/martincarthy
In the early 1960s, the approach Martin Carthy took to folk music was nothing short of revolutionary, albeit a relatively quiet revolution befitting of his humble nature. You wouldn’t find Carthy’s music clambering up the singles charts; his was not a face adorning the teen magazines.
Instead, his influence was felt at a grass-roots level. He plied his trade in the folk clubs, which is where the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon sought him out, enamoured of his traditional repertoire and keen to learn songs like ‘Scarborough Fair’ and ‘Lord Franklin’ directly from him before adapting them for their own purposes.
His debut eponymous album, re-releasing on vinyl on 23rd February 2024, by Topic Records as part of their ongoing Topic Treasures series, is a snapshot of the work he was doing at the time.

wow, so pompous and narcissitic. no humility here!'
Hey Martin Thanks ❤
Finally, these two on a track together! ❤
Magical.
I thought this was 5-in-the-bar
Martin Carthy looks like early 2000s Richard Hammond in this picture.
A truly beautiful track in all ways.
Richard has released a new album & its fab !
Beyond Paradise is where we just heard it, too!
Thank you for sharing this Gem. I love it!
Yes. Completely moving. Funnily, it is not myself nor my father I see in this song but my son. He even goes fishing.
I heard this on beyond paradise on BBC 1 last night, great song!
Obsessed.
Love It. Greatings from Northen Spain.
I love folk and goth and industrial so much and it's so cool to see crossovers where I wouldn't have expected there to be one!!! June is amazing. Check out her work on Peter Bellamy's "The Transports" album. Tragic, poignant, sublime.
🥰
Simply beautiful
Sublime .....
Glorious. Thank you
Lovely tune but Martin's guitar is seriously drowned out by the strident fiddle and the accordion, IMHO...
Busy year lots going on good & bad, alone christmas eve, the stars above, a party down the street, fireworks, heard this, cried. Great day anyway
A joy. And clearly filmed at one of our favourite hug venues, Union Chapel in Islington.
E’ stato un bel tour con belle canzoni
Perfect.
Noel Gallagher listen and learn😅
Check out their version of All tomorrow's parties...several members of Oyster Band were previously responsible for Daytrip to Bangor as Fiddler's Dram.
Magnatone was unique. They made one with about 10 small speakers in it. I think they were too hi fi sounding to overdrive. I would not be surprised to learn that Roland used Magnatone to model in their chorus amp
I love this! Such a meditative piece of music
Beautiful piece and beautiful playing
june tabor ... fabulous singer
Love this song and the lyrical pacing.
I can’t believe that this is 12 years old. Playing it now. It never gets old.
thankyou martin
This videos are a fantastic visual complement, to an already fantastic and beautiful album!!! On Topic Records, what a gorgeous sound coming from those two acoustic guitars. Thanks for posting and keep them coming!
'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - the only Joy Division song that everyone seems to know. Please listen to the other epics.... (Decades? New Dawn Fades? Ceremony? Transmission?)
Beautiful! Makes me want to get in my dinghy and sail the amazing English coastline!
SO great to hear Martin back in top form! The past few recording have left me a bit under-impressed, but this one is truly wonderful!
This is a stunning rendition of the classic by Joy Division. And while the original still captivates me, this is my favorite version. There's something about stripping down the song to the bare essence that packs a greater emotional punch.
Great mood. Would you share the tuning?
Magnificent
For David Howard. Hopefully fishing with his split cane rod in our galaxy and still riding motorcycles, waiting for his family and army comrades to join him. Bless his army comrades and all his family. He loved this song and passed it to me. Now I pass it others before I join them all ....
A good friend of mine recommended this song to me years ago and when I heard it I stood still and listened.. Then I played it again and again repeatedly on that day and I cried. My interpretation after all this I can't blame my father either as he had a tough life with all his faults. Like we all do. My dad was hard and tough. Now old and soft and I'm going to play it to him. This is the greatest song of my life across all genres as It touches me personally and I am not a soft person. Nothing else has before throughout my life or since. Just this one for me in Northern Ireland
Beautiful. I am old enough to remember the real thing. Just down the hill there used to be a field where they kept the heavy horses. You have made the girl, the lad, the horses, the wagon so real and so breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you.
I am also old enough to have experienced the hidden things that the song implies.
Great Song great Voice and Guitarists, as raw as it needs, wonderful😊
Sublime, why oh why do people cream over Swift and her ilk when this is available to one and all?
I find voices like Cara Dillon's as irritating as hell but I guess that track can be skipped!
Looking forward to seeing this group of fabulous musicians in Lyme Regis, 28th September 2023
Martin putting on a bit around the waist. Regardless he's still a genius.
I shall go into, go into a hare With sorrow sigh and with mickle care I shall go into, go into a hare With sorrow sigh and with mickle care I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I shall go into, go into a crow With sorrow sigh and the blackest throw I shall go into, go into a crow With sorrow sigh and rhe blackest throw I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I shall go into, go into a cat With sorrow sigh and a jet black shot I shall go into, go into a cat With sorrow sigh and a jet black shot I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I shall go into, go into a hare With sorrow sigh and with mickle care I shall go into, go into a hare With sorrow sigh and with mickle care I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again I go to the Devil in the Devil's name And stay till I come home again
A tribute to all those under appreciated fathers who if nothing else imparted a deep love to us sons to carry on the traditions.
