How does she have to pay child support if he’s dead? The widow could sue the mistress for the affair in the first place, but if the inheritance was left to the surviving children then she would have no grounds for a lawsuit especially if there’s evidence that she wanted them included in the family. The aunt is totally right, just because you have depression and you're suicidal, doesn't make it right for you to ruin a family relationship. I think she kept telling the kids how their father saved her, is because deep down she knows what she's doing is wrong, but she wants to justify it, cuz she doesn't want to feel even worse. I honestly think the dad has a "saviour complex', basically he likes playing the hero role in a vulnerable woman's life, i don't think he's genuinely in love with Anna, but he's just infatuated with her because she fulfills his need of becoming a hero and she managed to make him feel all sympathy for her with no logic. He sounds like the typical scum man, and she sounds like the typical white lotus in a chinese manhua, note, scum man meant man who are trash at their loving heroine, and white lotus meant female characters who likes to play innocent and vulnerable to manipulate man and get what they want.

TLDL: auntie pointed out that mental illness is hard, but it is not the thing that makes you become a homewrecker. Mom learned that step mom was talking about ending oneself in front of OP's 8y/o sister, which is against the mom and dad's agreement, so step mom isn't allowed near the kids. Dad is defending the step mom because of "how hard she had it," as though he did not divorce the mother of his children.

I had a friend in college who made suicide attempts. But she was never in a position to be rushed to the hospital. She always publicized her attempts and had different story to tell each person. She didn't want to off herself but instead she wanted attention. OP’s father’s mistress belongs to the same category.
