I would argue this is the definitive recording of the Oliver Nelson arrangement of “In a Mellow Tone.” Solid sax soli, probably the best solo I’ve ever heard played over this song by the great Al Grey, amazing trumpet solo by Greg Gisbert(19yo here btw), sublime lead playing by Eric Miyashiro with some fantastic and very tasteful high notes, and of course a very energized performance by Buddy Rich. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Buddy rich was a big influence for me, among other jazz greats. Max Roach, Louie Bellson, Papa Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Tony Williams.

Beautiful music. Pity the sound is not right all of the time, especially when Lee is playing the Chet Atkins classical. Why so few views and no comments?

This is by far my favorite big band tune, and as a trumpet player the high A at the end always hits me the same way as the first time I heard this song.

IMO David Murray is very overrated player,I've caught him live and on records since the early 80's. His Paul Gonsalves tribute concert in Boston 20 years ago was a joke. His abililites certainly don't merit him having one of the largest recorded outputs of any Jazz artist of the last couple of decades. A media darling early on when over-hyping new young saxophonists as the 2nd coming of Trane was commonplace. As a player he is not even close a Gary Thomas, Branford, Potter. When the critics would place a Chico Freeman or Murray above a Brecker in the Down Beat polls I'd just sit back and say WHAT!!!
