Is the Line 6 Pod Express the best of its kind?
Hmmm many opinions seemingly knowing what the guitar is all about yet not having one in hand to demonstrate your points??? I have watch a bunch of the NF3 reviews and hoped to gain additional info to consider buying one or not. Very disappointing. I have a SS SE and had the Core SS. I do not like the hum of the single coils nor do I like the 25.5" scale length. I have numerous guitars with humbucker so for me the question is how close to single coils is it. I know its different - just how different. One video with Tone Junkie showed it nailing the S tone. Most people who are into it look at it as more of an 80's super strat type. Again to call something dumb your not playing is unfair.
I own both. The NF3 is great. No single coil hum and the outputs sound great. Especially if you pay with the tone knob. Already sold my Silver Sky
Just curious, what made you sell the Silver Sky? Was it for an upgrade or just a change of guitars?
Agree 100%. PRS SE has been knocking it out of the park but I don't see the point of the NF3 SE especially when you can get a Silver Sky SE instead. I guess if you want something Strat-like but sounds different or if you want noise cancelling pickups, then it might be your thing, but is there really that much demand for it? Doesn't seem like it. When it comes to reading the room for demand, PRS is usually on top of it, but I feel like the NF3 SE was a mistake. Personally, I think now would've been the perfect time to release a Tele style SE since a lot of people have been requesting it (I wouldn't be surprised if they're working on one currently). The Miles Kennedy signature has mini-humbuckers, but if they release an SE Tele then I feel like it should have single coils. The Silver Sky doesn't deviate that far from a Strat, and I feel like that was a good choice. It was just different enough to be unique and still scratch that classic Strat itch. They should keep that same thought process when making Tele-style SE. Even if it seems like they're straight up ripping off a Fender Tele, just make enough slight changes to make it unique and call it a day.
I am excited to see what Paul does with a more classic T Style guitar or a SE version. I agree that it’s most likely in the works. He always has some great twists on his guitars and I will be interested to see what he does with them.
How much difference is there in a pickup wound over sea or in America? I haven't played a USA made PRS in decades but I owned an S2 with the "s" pickups in 2020 to 2022.
I would love to swap them in and out of the same guitar but from playing guitars with each back to back they do seem to be voiced slightly different however, being in different guitars makes it hard to know how much. PRS is knocking it out of the park!
@@tonebros6533 I agree, PRS is running away with their current/new releases!
Big difference. I just got a CE and an S2 to add to my SE. I didn’t think there would have been a huge difference but there is. SE pickups sound good. The U.S. versions sound great.
@@user-os3ko9fw3c I live in Canada & a core is just over $5,000 my S2 that I got in 2020 was about $2650 after taxes. An SE is about $1000 retail, maybe an SE model will be my mid-life crisis guitar? I'll be 45 in January. so maybe in 2026? I had my S2 before the upgrade & though the "S" pickups were great.
I just noticed this today when looking at Sweetwater!!! I started to investigate the reason behind it and it's just great, they are now affordable!
NF is a form factor, not a full description of a pickup. The NF pickups in the Studio, the Modern Eagle, Paul's Guitar, the NF53, and now the NF3 are all different. Some are humbucker voiced, the ones in the NF53 are obviously voiced after the pickups in Paul's 53 Telecaster, and the NF3 is simply a less spiky and noiseless strat-like implementation. I do have a Fender CS Strat with hand-wound Texas Specials, and the NF3 pickups do sound extremely similar - I know because mine arrived 3 days ago. I would not call it a dud at all. It is a distinct guitar with a PRS scale length and a PRS neck profile (so pretty much the opposite of the Silver Sky) and it sounds and plays great. Very happy so far.
Glad to hear you like it after being able to try it out in person. Once we get our hands on one we will need to do a follow up. Thanks for adding to the conversation
Does a pedalboard and a modeler count?
I think so for sure!
I have a smaller board with fuzz, od, pitch, mod, delay. I have a studio board with all those plus EQ and reverb.
Having dedicated boards like that helps a ton. Sounds like a good setup!
good pickups, electronics and mechanical functions like the truss rod working, the frets being leveled and not poking out of the guitar, the nut being cut properly and everything being grounded is what matters in a guitar not what paint you put on its only my opinion as someone whos been playing guitar for 20 years
We agree those are things that must be in order first but we do think the type of finish and how it’s applied makes a difference to the system as a whole. Thanks for your input!
LOL
I don’t smoke but I sure as fuckkk support it !
lol! 😂
Totally pass....
I understand, they are good backups or backline but not for everyone and every situation. Thanks for sharing
Pass unless I win the lottery lol
Winning the lottery would change my mind too! 😂
@@tonebros6533 that might be a good topic lol “what gear would you buy if you won the lottery”. I know that would be a LOT different than what reality is for me lol
I don't think it matters much on sound. I like maple because originally Fender was maple. Now Gibson on the other hand was rosewood. I don't think your strings touch the fretboard, if they do you are gripping to hard. I am style over substance. Huge Mike Cambell fan here too.
Give me maple or give me death 😂
My pick journey started with fender mediums, then went to Jazz IIIs when I got more into lead playing, and now I’ve been using the Dunlop Flow pick which is kind of the best of both worlds for me. Plus I like the way they feel and play. They allow me to lot of dynamics as well
They all have a place and time. Thanks for sharing!
@@tonebros6533 💯💯
Lots of good points. If the fly rig was $199 or $3249 it may be a slight contender, but for $350 you can get a lot of other stuff. It is very simple though, and that is really cool. Like you mentioned too, I don’t have a need for it at this point so it’s a pass for me
Talking about a pedal you havent got or tried? :) Glad i watched this really useful thanks guys
Ya, the idea with the Gas or Pass segment is to be a conversation about if a particular piece of gear is something that we are passing on or if we are gassing to buy or try that piece of gear.
Mark my words, that Keeley rotary pedal is going to be revered as the best sounding rotary in years to come. I got one (to play) because it sounds so realistic. It truly sounds like a real rotary speaker when ran in stereo. I also got the punchline bass pedal. Expensive in terms of a bass pedal, but in the audio world, we pay twice that just for a good preamp so I pulled the trigger and it didn’t disappoint. It sounds amazing. Perfect for recording bass direct too plus a solid all in one option with the best of the best (baxandall EQ, super reverb based analogue amp sim, excellent sounding parallel drive, and a great sounding compressor. Also, in regard to the radius I have to say I prefer different ones for different things. I love 9.5 for blues, rock, chords, bending, etc. but for shredding I love 14 inches. With that said, if someone said I had to play only one radius for the rest of my life, it would have to be 9.5 hands down for me
I’m glad to hear about that was your experience with the pedals. I’m excited to see what the future holds with them, Keeley makes some amazing stuff for sure. Great way to put it about your preferred fretboard radius!
You guys should check out the Dime-head player for NAM profiles. It’s 1/3 the price of the kemper, and is accurate to 99.99% of the original amp (through null tests). You guys would be very surprised at the sound result. With that said, I agree, nothing beats just turning on an amp and plugging in for jamming. But sonically, there’s no way anyone can tell a difference (in a recorded performance). I was a skeptic at first too, but check out Leo Gibson’s video on the Dime-head with NAM. That may change your mind (possibly) 😁
We will check them out. No one can deny how great of a tool they can be!
If you guys get one I would love to see a side by side comparison against the Peterson headstock tuner. I have one of those already but heard good stuff about how fast and accurate the tunerette is so I'm definitely curious. I personally don't really care too much for the cigarette thing, but I also don't mind as well if it works as good as they say it does. Definitely curious though.
Stay tuned, we still have the plans to do a follow up on them soon!
@@tonebros6533 sweet!!
Ibenez DE7!!!!
That delay is a great first pedal! Good call!
Single coil all the way.... you can get a 6-way switch by free-way switch, and get the pickups combined into a humbucker. Problem solved
I like the idea but I do think the position of the pickups not being the same might cause another series of questions and sounds.
@tonebros6533 it isn't the same, but it gets you there with more tweakability. I own one guitar with humbuckers (a custom telecaster with firebird pickups on it) and it's MUCH harder to dial in a clean tone in
Has to be Boss, because none of the other pedal makers ALSO make a multiFX/All-in-one... Are the rules that you can't have a Helix or FM9 if you didn't pick Line 6 or Fractal? If that's the case then Boss is the only option if you can't let go of multi-stuff and you also can't let go of old-time pedals.
We were trying to pick a company for single effects pedals. We couldn’t use a multi effects pedal like a FM9. Boss is a great call!
@@tonebros6533 I feel like you guys need to do the video where you explain why you can't use a multiFx pedal... Make it spicy 🔥
I wanted to be the first commenter
Ok, first guitar, humbucker, p90, Strat single coil or acoustic? Thoughts?
I would suggest electric guitar for the first guitar but which pickup would depend on a lot. Sounds like another episode for the future
@@tonebros6533 ok, I’ll stay tuned. Thanks
Single coils. I don't know that you can get the Knopfler sound from a humbucker - but you an always fatten up a single coil with the right pedal.
Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation!
Single coils if you know what you are doing. They are more expressive, nuanced, dynamic, and it’s easier to make a single coil sound heavy than it is to attenuate a humbucker and make it sound clean, cutting, and with space. I say that as someone with more humbucker guitars than single coils. Humbuckers can make anyone sound good by layering on drive and distortion. Plus when you get older and more experienced you tend to see guys transition to single coils rather than the other way around.
Ehx canyon trust me bro
Good choice. Also a memory man variation would have been a good one to bring up too.
Tim Pierce still uses a Carbon Copy!
A modern classic delay for sure!
NUX duotime with tap for tempo and Flamma fc03 (129€ and 35€ resp). NUX for the "heavy lifting" and stereo, and Flamma for a *very* short flashback (5..10ms, just for thickening the sound). Both available from thomanDOTde. And yes, I use both of them, so I can attest to the quality.
Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation
I'm assuming these will all use 12AX7 front ends rather than EF86... 🤔
or a mosfet in the pre amp ..it wouldn't surprise me
According to the spec sheet they say 12ax7 front end.
Love my ef86 heritage AC30, way better than the last series
JHS for me 😁
Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation
curious, where are those made?
My understanding, is the handwired series are made in Vietnam, and customs are made in China.
I am also curious, I haven’t seen anything official anywhere but I did see a mention that they were being made in Vietnam. It wasn’t official though so I would still just call it a rumor for now.
@@tonebros6533 yeah, utterly unacceptable .. I'll stick with Tone King, or Friedman .. or UK made Marshals.
@@Sams911unacceptable how? Why? Asian made? As you type away on your 100% Asian made phone or computer. How stupid 😂

Mesa Boogie be like “too many knobs? Hold my beer…”
Exactly!
I am a totally blind person. I prefer switches, knobs, and sliders over touch screens and menus. 🎚🎛
The CE has a shallow version of the Core top carve, with generally a better looking flame top over the S2 line. The S2 has its own carve, which some like better, but generally the maple top is the least flamed of all the models.
Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation
The new headstock is great.. I have it on a new les paul custom and it looks and feels much more complete as opposed to the older "not quite at home" ugly duckling one.... Its such a nice touch on the new models
Thanks for watching and adding your opinion to the conversation
Boss.
Thanks for watching and adding to the question
Wampler Dual fusion running split stereo on my Kemper is a real nice touch with little to no gain on my acoustic guitar i would love to check out Wampler's less digital stuff 3 knobs or less phaser or delay mostly. Jhs would be a close second or first as a Haunting Mids i find is so good i am going to get a second one soon.
Imma throw walrus in there. Great wet effects, great modulation, and great drives and fuzzes. They even have a tuner now.
I mean, the 'drive pedal' is named 'preamp'...it does have EQ and you can use it in that clean application not a drive.
TC Electronic is also a juggernaut with a ton of options. Hall of fame, flashback or nova delay, polytune, mojo mojo... you've got any effect you could think of.
too*
***We totally forgot to mention that CE’s are bolt-on necks, and S2’s are neck-through’s. Which will change the tone, feel, etc. Whoops!
Very nice guitar. Planning on trying one out next month.
Thanks, I don’t think you will be disappointed. Everyone I have played has blown me away in a unique way! Great guitars with a true vibe!
Strymon and it's not even close
Gotta agree
I concur 🤘
I think its dumb… it literally says Epi! Why ppl gta showoff.. buy epi for what its worth!
I'd probably just go with EHX out of familiarity. I have 12 pedals, and 6 of them are EHX. I don't even have half of the pedals on my board at the moment because I simplified my rig, but currently I have a Korg tuner, EHX Pitch Fork, EHX Ripped Speaker, Behringer EQ (for my 8 string, gotta tame the lows a little bit), and the EHX Signal Pad in the effects loop as a master volume. No overdrive, but I have the EHX Hot Wax dual overdrive. I'm just liking what I'm getting without an overdrive these days. EHX seems to have a version of everything I'm looking for at a good price.
Well, today I learned EHX do a tuner
That makes me think because the tuner is the most important pedal on my board for sure!
@@tonebros6533 100% I nearly discounted them out of hand!
