Poplar bark siding was something I discovered when Googling for information regarding the use of poplar logs for cabin building. As soon as I saw it I wanted to do it. I went for one but got two. In this video I saw down a tall poplar and while at it take down a large dead standing oak. One was easy to get but the other was much more involved, while it may look simple to drag it out with a tractor, it's a bit unnerving maneuvering a tractor through the woods on uneven ground. The risk of rolling the tractor is high along with other dangers.

    I cannot get the blade square at all. I took the AMF cap off and loosened those two outer bolts and it simply will not move. I took those two bolts completely out and it still won't move. It'll rotate freely enough with the detente lever pulled, but if it's in, she's stuck solid! Even a little gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet didn't get it to move at all. Short of figuring out how to tear the motor/yoke assembly completely down, is there anything else you can think of I could try? Edit: Well, I guess if all else fails, read the directions, lol. The instruction manual doesn't mention it, but the maintenance manual does. It said on some models it might be necessary to loosen the big center nut between the two smaller ones. Once I did that she turned right as rain!

    I really like this! The symbolism of the old-style cut nails is especially nice, as they are probably like the nails used in the crucifixion of Jesus. Just a few weeks ago, I happened to buy a box of these nails at a discount store, thinking they would be handy for something! Now I know what I'll do with them. I'll go back and see if they have longer or shorter ones to go with what I got. 😊

    This interests me. I have a fair amount of Poplar and wanting to find uses for it. You mentioned you will be milling the log for lumber. Is it going to be used structurally? Poplar seems very light in weight when dry and just can't see it as a structural choice but you seem very knowledgeable on the species and wanted to ask. Liked and subbed. Thanks.

    Saw a 1956 AMF DeWalt radial arm saw on marketplace about 80 miles north of me today for $35 the guy claims everything works on. Thing is, I already have a table saw and a miter saw, so I don't really know what I'd do with one of those. A friend of mine had one back in the '80's that he seemed to like a lot, but that's the only one I'd ever even actually seen. are there any advantages to having one of these as opposed to having my table saw and my miter saw? Edit: I went ahead and bought the saw. I looked at harbor freight's press and it was $169. Saw a 6 ton press on Amazon for $70.00 so will probably get it instead. The finish is a little rough but not terrible. I may be able to buff out the surface rust in the paint, but its cabinet will need a heavy sanding and re-spray. The cabinet is a DeWalt as well that was sold separately in their 1958 catalogue for $69.95 according to the paperwork the guy had with it and the box frame of the saw fits it like a glove. It will also need the 14 gauge sjoow wire as the original has a big spiral shaped crack running the length of the cord where it comes out of the arm. I think ripping on this saw will actually be safer than on my table saw as the table saw has no safety features whatsoever, but the DeWalt has the kickback pawl which I will use along with a pair of board buddies.

    • @Rebel9668
      @Rebel9668 Před měsícem

      Edit: I have everything de-rusted and painted except for the motor and I have the new power cord in it. I just finished derusting and cleaning all the old goop off of it and the yoke and about ready to paint it. Afterwards I'll also clear coat it. Couldn't find the kind of textured paint in any shade of green at all so went with a sea green/paris green enamel and I think it looks pretty sharp. Hand painting the DeWalt on the front of it and the UP and arrow on the crank was a pain, but it is done in red and finished. Getting close to being done altogether except for the bearings which will have to wait until next month.

    Thank you! I had to replace the window in an old barn that blew out in a storm. It might have been oil based, but it was so old that most of the paint was pealing off. So I sanded it down really well (yes, I used a mask, and maybe it was even lead based paint from 100 years ago, so I probably should have used an N95), then I used water based primer (2 coats) then latex outdoor paint (2 coats). Bought the DAP 33 for the glazing, and after reading the instructions realized I couldn't use it because it was for oil based paint. So after several other searches on what to use, I found your video and will do the DAP latex glazing and give it a try. I appreciate the video, it gives me more confidence, since I've never done this before. I already had my points in before watching this video. I had purchased points at the hardware store, but found my Dad's old points from years ago. I guess he did this himself too, but he's not around so I can't for his advice. Another video suggested I place a small bead behind the glass to seat it, so I'll do this too. Keep up the good work, I'm going to use your technique!

    For those of us who don't have a hill of decomposed sawdust nearby: If you have a compost bin with a built-in ventilation, you can layer your kitchen scraps and lawn clippings with sawdust. This speeds up its aging and results in amazing rich but airy soil that you won't find at stores.
