I have a 1937 which was fully reconditioned about 10 years ago in California. It has quite a few patches. But it still has *that* sound and feel. I started using it as my daily driver recently. It’s amazing. Geyer said the CF Schmid was the “most elegant design” until his. 😊

My dad is Bruce Swedien, legendary recording engineer and I grew up in recording studios. Back in the 1960's, Bill Putman (at Universal Recording in Chicago) would float the floors, apart from the building on cork. The walls were further floated on special spring clips, so the quality of the sound was unbelievable. And they loved recording french horns.

People in the comments fr acting like this is hard and he's tounging to fast. Anyone who has been practicing double tounging for like a month can do this etude. Only thing hard about it is being able to go through the etude without being tired and DYNAMICS (oh how I hate you)

I started using the standard D3 (spun bell, non-hand hammered) a couple of years ago having used an Alex 103 prior. In terms of sound, i felt the D3 is less ‘dense’ than the 103 and has a beautiful, uniform warm tone throughout the dynamic range. For the 103, I’d describe the sound as having a dense dark core (dark orange if i were to associate a color) but develops into a brilliant (bright yellow) sound at forte. A general opinion from me and my friends who have compared the two horns felt the D3 would be exceptional in chamber settings, but would prefer the 103 in orchestra settings when they need the horn to cut through. The D3 has excellent build quality and it’s great that the leadpipe, mouthpiece receiver and even thumb lever can be adjusted to tailor to each horn player’s playing style and grip. I also like that the D3 has a seamless bell branch (the 103 bell branch has a seam midway) Looking forward to your video comparison between the 2 horns if you do get to film it.

You sound great on either! I've had an S3 BB for going on a year now and I love it. It's easier to play than any other trumpet I've played over the past 50 years. I've picked a couple of the Yamaha New York and LA models and they were also very, very nice. I think you are right and sometimes the difference, for the most part, just comes down to the price.

Why do you half valve the 8va leap?

I, as a Conn 8-d player ( C series 1964 ) Prefer the Dieter to the Paxman, not that I haven't played Paxman. I played Paxman for over 20 years in Europe ( one of the first Triple horns made... an XL in Brass ) And helped Dick and Bob design and delivered the first "America Model" to Bill Lane with the L.A. Phil. back in 1976. I was never impressed with the Paxman Model 20. Bob did make an outstanding 5-valve single in Gold brass which was among the finest horns I've played. Thank you for this fine video.

First is best, can’t beat the Bach sound. Interesting to hear how inherently bright the Yamaha is in comparison. Much less low end harmonic ring
