    The biggest reason I have for reverse hits not being called Interference, for hitting someone not the puck carrier, is that if the puck carrier is in a position to play a body then they're also in a position to be hit by whomever they're targetting. If you're in range and don't have the puck then you're already playing the body, or intend to. When driving if you rear end another vehicle, you're often still liable unless there's pretty clear cut evidence of some kind that the car that was hit was out of line. While I do think these reverse hits are getting out of hand, I think it's the approaching player who needs to be mindful of the position they put themselves in. "Damn, if he stops short I ain't ready for that." Just like "Damn, I can't cut that way because the defender with hands is there," or "Dude has 50 pounds on me I can't skate through that." Most of these are bad because the puck carrier often can't see what they're doing because the other player is directly behind them, on their ass. They might have a good idea, but they can't see when to pull the punch, so to speak. It's on the defender to not be in a position to be hit by the puck carrier this way. I have a hard time feeling much sympathy for players who put themselves where they can't be seen and the puck carrier hits them for it. Stop going there. Stop checking from behind, cut around their back and make them turn with you. Wear a cage and not this half visor shit so they can't clock your chin or nose. They have multiple other options to prevent these kinds of reverse hits than adding a rule to the game. How many more defenders have to take a shoulder or helmet to the face before they learn the lesson you ALWAYS learn when getting hit in hockey? Don't do that. Do it differently. That didn't work out. Leaving the ice should always, absolutely be charging. Number contact, especially after a race, should be called checking from behind way more. Charging into corners and boarding should be called way more. Crosschecking should be called more. Until the behavior requiring the calls is appropriately curbed.

    I like how Jacob Trouba was the example as the outlier for penalties… Because I don’t think the refs even know what he is doing out there 😂😂

    The simplest way to combat this (ducking/hip checking low) would be considered clipping, so I really don't know how anyone is expected to combat this short of putting on the brakes and hoping the player in front loses their balance... Which is kind of absurd.

    Thanks for including that Owen Nolan "pick the corner" shot at 17:19, from what I remember I watched that All Star game live and the reaction to that was 😮. Especially given the context, completing the hat trick in front of his home crowd. I had long forgotten about it, but seeing it again reminded me what a cool moment that was.

    If you shoot the same side as your handedness you likely will have a harder shot and if your shoot is opposite your handedness there’s a higher chance of having better control. (Puck handling)

    Penalty is not going to effectively reduce the danger of the reverse hits. The best way is for players to be aware. To add this to their self protection bag. Head on a swivel as they say in football.

    Even if they don't want to go back to the cartoon duck logo, they could use the current duck-foot D in matching colors with the old school diagonal graphic jerseys. Have the main-color-orange in the old school pattern as the alternate. The problem jersey is iconic for a reason. I grew up on the east coast and was Penguins fan until the Hurricanes moved in, but my first rec league team (first time playing properly organized and everyone in matching uniforms instead of "dark vs light" pickup games) was thr eggplant color original Mighty Ducks pattern jersey. I am still sad twenty five or so years later (holy crap i feel old writing that out) that I had to return it at the end of the season (jerseys got reused each year).

    I always thought it would be great to have an All-Time All-Star game with Righties vs Lefties. The goalie would be decided with glove hand. If you go All-Time, it would be interesting...Gretzky, Crosby, McDavid (left) vs Ovechkin, Howe, Lemieux. Yeah, if I ever find a genie in a bottle, that's my first wish. Those guys, at their peak, in an actual game. (yeah, make a full lineup, of course, but those six are a good start!)

  • @leonopterix981
    @leonopterix981 Před 5 dny

    Defenders are not playing around the hit yet, they need to understand when the puck carrier knows they are there and brace for impact sooner to make it a 50/50 or better if you are hitting from behind

  • @celticstephenhill

    7:08 - that Hartman hit on Ehlers was one of the dirtiest hits I've ever seen in the NHL. I couldn't believe he only got one game for a clear intent to injure/end a career.

      @jsquared1013 Před 3 dny

      Ever seen a replay of any of the dozens of Scott Stevens headhunter hits that ended or nearly ended careers? Most of the ones I can think of are worse than that.

  • @GoodMenstruationAttitude

    They're great and used to be considered just regular effort. Nowadays they're safer than regular hits, both from a penalty and a safety (as in, the hittee becomes the hitter) perspective. But we're not far at ll from these hits regularly being problematic and repeatedly concussing people, to say nothing of coming closer and closer to interference.

  • @darrenpinard1658
    @darrenpinard1658 Před 6 dny

    Great video. The ones with the players facing each other look far less dangerous. Most of these should be interference, or maybe they should update charging to a “launching” style roughing penalty.

  • @PatDK

    If you can’t check a player from behind, that player shouldn’t be able to check the player behind him in the same manner

    • @crimiusXIII
      @crimiusXIII Před 3 hodinami

      This is the way. Defenders shouldn't be there in the first place, not with any kind of momentum that could injure. It's one thing when digging into the boards, it's another flying in to dig.
