Building a wildlife pond in our garden (Ongoing project on a small farm in Europe)
It's time to work on our garden pond! You've already seen us dig up the hole and put the pond form in. Now we have all the necessary material to put in the pond and fill it with water. Let's also add some water plants to make it look pretty 😊

Apocalypse in our garden | We suffered heavy losses (Life on a small farm in Europe)

When we saw our garden in bloom several weeks earlier than usual, we were excited but worried at the same time. We knew frosty nights could come and destroy everything. We were really hoping they wouldn't, but they did. Sadly, the damage is visible on most fruit trees and shrubs. Not everything was destroyed though, and thanks to the warm weather, we already have first fruit to taste. Subscribe...

    Hey guys. It's great to see the pond coming together! In our pond I took some styrofoam that was bucket shaped, wrapped it in burlap and filled it with dirt. We planted rhubarb in the middle and strawberries all around. We let it float around in the pond and it's been like that for 4 years now. It is so happy! The roots grow through the styrofoam into the water helping to keep the water clear. Our fish nibble on the strawberries that hang over the edge.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter Před 5 dny

      Wow, that is such an interesting area! It's like a floating magical island 😁 We would say that our pond is too small for that though because the rhubarb would cover all of it in some time...

      The dirt from the rocks settled, so it was ok. It was just remnants of soil and sand on the rocks, so that's ok. Organic stuff would be worse, because it promotes the growth of green algae. We will explain in the future.

    Why would you keep repeating that the roads are ‘dangerous’? They are not dangerous, what they might be is different to what you are used to back home or experienced during other vacations which are totally different things. Neither are there cars everywhere, you barely pass another vehicle on the road and unless you are driving in Corfu town, where the roads are different again and built for higher volumes of traffic, the roads are never busy, even during high season. Also when you are describing a residents private place of worship and remembrance choose your words with the considerations of their feelings. ‘Scary’ isn’t appropriate and is rather disrespectful

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter Před 11 dny

      Hi, maybe we didn't use the right words since English is not our first language. The roads to us felt very narrow at some places and we were afraid we would scratch the car or fall of the cliff. It's just a vacation vlog, nothing too serious so there is no need to get offended. We loved our stay in Corfu, it's a beautiful island 😉

    • @fakiola9184
      @fakiola9184 Před 10 dny

      @@tommyandpeter I understand because English is not my first language either! Not everything translates the way you intend! There really is no danger of you going over the cliff, you’d have to be driving recklessly, under the influence or at high speed for that to happen. However cosmetic damage to vehicles across the island you’ll see all the time! Greeks don’t care what they drive as long as it gets them from one point to the other! You’ll rarely see a new car or one from a luxury manufacturer so the last thing they’re concerned with is the appearance of their vehicle! If you should visit again, to pass the time as you travel you should play spot the clean vehicle and it cannot be a rental! You’ll probably drive the perimeter of the island and still be at zero! I appreciate this is a vacation vlog, I enjoyed it for the most part and plan to return for updates but you’d be surprised how much influence a vlog can have over a viewers decision to visit somewhere if they’re researching other’s experiences. Inaccurate driving conditions can be enough to put someone off and quaint old Corfu is already struggling to entice holidaymakers. I’d be afraid if I heard somewhere described as dangerous several times in a vlogs opening minutes! Your channel could blow up tomorrow and all eyes will be on you. Kandylakia are as important to Greeks as a grave. They play a huge part in Greek life,tradition and culture. They represent a families religious outlook and links to their ancestors. They are built by local craftsmen, usually someone who is also a close friend of the family, be it from wood, metal, marble, concrete or whatever the family request, in the design of their choice.Inside they place photographs of icons/patron saints, candles, holy oil and rosaries. People tend to them daily to light candles, pay respects, worship, pray, connect to those who have passed and to acknowledge fate. They are looked upon as beautiful and pure a long way off ‘scary’. I can however appreciate that being a persons knee jerk reaction on seeing one for the first time. I can tell from your personalities that you did not intend to cause any harm or offence. I figured that you’d prefer someone to point it out and make you aware than insult the sacred tradition among Greeks which has been around for generations. I hope your channel continues to grow alongside your travel vlogs

      Thank you, R and D 😉 We are hopeful that the garden will be full of life even after we lost part of our future harvest. Staying optimistic 😊

    Sorry for laughing when you speak your own language, thank goodness you did not fall. 😊Any update on the owls?🤔

      Haha, it would feel so weird if we really spoke our own languages in the videos. So we just sometimes keep it for fun in the background 😀 No owls have showed up yet. Maybe they can find better places in old barns that are in the village...

    Do the villagers notice you are Gay while visit their town

      Since Spain is one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world and the island of Gran Canaria even more so, it's doubtful that they care about such things...

      Yes, such are most castles in Europe since they are centuries old.

      Thank you, Anthony. It's always sad when late frost destroys the potential harvest. But oh well... Luckily not everything was damaged in our garden, so we should still have something 🙂

    Fruit trees can be protected against frost by spraying them with water all night. The water sticks on the flowers and early fruits and turns into ice, protecting it from frost damage. It sounds strange, but it works. During the day the ice melts and you start spraying again at sunset.

      @tommyandpeter Před 13 dny

      We've heard of this method but it would have been difficult for us anyway because we couldn't be at the country house every day because of work, also difficult to stay awake the whole night because of other commitments.

    Sorry to hear this guys. Your garden is still pretty though. Love the flowers. Hopefully the fruit trees will still produce something for the season

      @tommyandpeter Před 14 dny

      Thank you. It was quite stressful, but we are still hopeful that the trees will produce something, we also have a big variety of shrubs and not all of them were damaged, so in the end it should be quite ok 😊

    Hi Tommy & Peter.. greetings from Miami. Sorry to hear about your late frost experience. We are having the opposite weather extreme here. We are seeing daily high temps of +35 C which are temperatures we would normally not see until late July and August. My Spring vegetables.. corn, peppers, beans, are drying out/ burning up in the afternoon sun. Best wishes to you two/garden.

      Wow, that is really something. So hot already! It's always a fight with the weather, it's either too cold or too warm, too wet or too dry... Gardening can be hard, but luckily it's also rewarding 😊 Greetings to Miami 😉

    I like how free you both look riding your bikes though the countryside, it looks so beautiful and peaceful, take care of each other

    Oh no! Guys, I know this must be so disappointing for you!!! But, yes, you certainly did sense it was going to happen. I hope it doesn't impact fruiting on the commercial scale too much as that will have real impacts on access to fresh food etc. Not good. There has been some concern of it happening here in Australia too, I mean beyond the limits of what might be considered normal, but I don't think it has really happened yet. Like you, we live in the city and it is very interesting to notice the seasonal timing difference between city and our farm which is just 1.5 hours away. As you say, nature is incredible and has the capacity to recover. And your stunning bulb flowers will thrive in the frosty conditions and, actually, be all the better for it. We planted our spring bulbs this weekend, always a joy. Keep well.

      @tommyandpeter Před 14 dny

      Yeah, late frost is normal and every year it destroys something. But this was really too much, since everything was in bloom. So sad 🫤 We have some fruits in pots on our balcony in the city and they are thriving, haha 😁 But even at the country house we should still have something. Who knows, maybe it will still be a good year in the end 🙂 Thank you 😉
