Fuel Tank De-rust & Seal (BMW R65)
What's Up Peeps!! Kicking off my return this year with a fairly comprehensive guide on de- rusting and then liquid lining the steel fuel tank from a BMW R65 motorbike, which, is older than me...
Let's see if I can give this fuel tank the final touches of a nice cleaned out interior, preventing further corrosion and contamination in the fuel.

Great vid, just a suggestion rather that bolts in table try using cap Allen bolts so you have nice smooth round head as apposed to a chunky hex bolt. Nice to see, thanks.
Cheers for the tip mate. The table is looking a bit sad, as unfortunately warping is still pretty bad. So table top upgrade will be coming in the future, subscribe to know when it drops. Maybe buttonhead screws next time 🤷🏾♂️ Cheers for the support.

I debated pouring liner in and after cleaning all of the flaking stock liner and rust out, I chose to not reapply liner because I read on line where some folks had the new liner flaking within a year. Too much work to have to remove a liner again. The advice was, always refill the tank with fresh fuel after riding to prevent new rust forming. After three years, still good. I have an R80 BMW tank and I used BBs instead of nuts, which shook out easily. I need to paint the filler neck which has formed some surface rust. I have a Motone Monza gas cap which I pulled to check for rust recently.😎
Heads up for next time, Citric acid works better/faster. Its cheaper and doesnt smell either.

Helpful hint, it’s not necessary to remove even half the stuff from the trunk that you did to access the nuts for taillight removal/installation, not even the liner.
very nice video, i want to do it myself soon. if i understood it correctly, the led rings are normal tail lights and the original tail/brake lights only act as a brake light now? i assume the led rings are 12v so you dont need any sort of condensator. how waterresistant are the lights after they have been taken apart / is the original glue enough for it to be sealed properly? thanks in advance :)
Yes mate you've got it. As for water-resistance, depends on how much you can get the original glue to behave when re-gluing together. I had a couple of spots around the lense edge where I wasn't too convinced the original stuff glued that well so to be on the safe side I neatly thumbed in some clear sealant, wiping off any overspill. Wish you had clamped that down before routine, every time it shifted I panicked for your future rattling windows. Looks good though I like the table as a base too! Making a square frame is slow so that is a great shortcut for someone lazy like me. Going to use that for sure.
