It is sad and a loss to English Canada that are unable to celebrate this man as a Canadian Hockey Icon. They claim only Gordie Howe of that era. But French Canadians hockey roots are deeper as we recognize and celebrate two hockey icons of that era. What this man means to French Canadians he also means the same to all Canadians, they sadly don’t know it. “Le Rocket”

I can still remember the moment when after 4-5 minutes of thunderous applause, mixed in with the emotional Maurice ,but it went on! For 7 minutes! It could have went longer had the announcer not started talking, even so he struggled to be heard as fans kept on, and it was one of the best and heartfelt moments in The Canadians history!

Toronto here - when I was a little boy, I was at an event with my dad and Maurice Richard was there. My dad sent me over to get his autograph - I had no idea who he was but of course I did what my dad said. I think my dad wanted his autograph but was afraid to ask. I got the autograph, and it's something I still remember to this day. Maybe I was 7 or 8 years old - almost 69 now.

I'm as true blue a Leafs fan as I can be. When Montreal played their last game at the Gardens. Mr. Richard came to drop the puck. We knew he was sick. That this might be his last time in Toronto. I don't know if we stood for seven minutes. But it was the longest ovation I ever participated in. Nor was there a dry eye including my own in the house. What a man. What a night. What a great game. God bless the guy that invented it.

And then there was Gary Bettman who had zero inkling as to why the NHL became a successful major sport in North America and Europe. This man single handedly carried the burden and aspirations of French Canadiens and his suspension by Clarence Campbell and subsequent riot in Montréal marked the unofficial start of Québec's Quiet Revolution.

    - Final game at the Forum On March 11, 1996, the Canadiens played their last game at the Montreal Forum, defeating the Dallas Stars 4-1 on a Monday night. The game was televised on TSN and TQS in Canada, and on ESPN in the United States. After the game, many previous hockey greats were presented to the crowd. The largest ovation of the night was left at the end for legendary Canadiens star Maurice "Rocket" Richard, at over 16 minutes in length. Wikipedia, 95-96 Canadiens season. You can add the 16 minutes to your list too, hah!
