Rackless Motorcycle Luggage vs Soft Panniers
If you're an off road motorcycle travel enthusiast looking for the best adventure bike luggage or dual sport luggage, the very first choice you have to make is a simple one: soft panniers or rackless luggage? Both options have their advantages, but the choice between them is not as simple as it might seem on the surface.
Rackless motorcycle luggage doesn't require racks (obviously) so you aren't adding unnecessary expense or weight. There are less potential failure points and the weight of your gear sits where a bike is designed to carry weigh under stress: on the subframe. Motorcycle rackless luggage can also move from bike to bike quickly and easily without needing to buy racks for every motorcycle you own.
Motorcycle soft panniers are generally regarded as better for travel because they carry more gear and add more weight to your bike than a rackless setup. Soft panniers for motorcycles are easier to swap with hard cases if you have compatible soft luggage mounts and they keep the top of your bike free for additional cargo or a passenger.
Rackless luggage vs soft panniers is a tough decision to make. Fortunately, whether you choose soft panniers or rackless motorcycle luggage, Giant Loop has several awesome options available for you to choose from.

    Hi Dork, I love watching your channel! I like your light weight luggage setup, but I was wondering if the Tillamook Dry Bag doubles as an impact absorption device when you are rear-ended because the brake/tail light appears to be covered? Seriously though, I picked up a 2019 CB500X (w/ Rally Raid Level 2) recently that is fitted out with Givi Dolomiti Trekker luggage. The 3 pieces weigh 37 pounds empty!!! (side boxes are 12 lbs each and the top box is 13 lbs) Great for durability but not so great when they weigh the bike down. It forces me to leave my "kitchen sink" home, lol. It also turns a fun lightweight "Adventure Bike" into a slow, wallowing pig. I am in search of ideas to get the weight down for multi-day camping with tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, chair, tarp, minimal cooking equipment and clothes. At least the Givi top box has to stay home, to be replaced by a lighter dry bag, to make it work. Maybe the rider could go on a diet too, but where is the fun in that?

      The 1 gallon is usually more than enough for one person on a motorcycle. The 2 gallon is still ok for motorcycling, but it tends to become a tad too heavy. So if you are a solo rider, go for the 1 gallon and if there's 2 of you, go for the 2 gallons.

    I have the Great Basin and use the pods a LOT for work. One thing that I feel might be a good addition is a set of simple straps that you could use to make a backpack. If they were simple enough (effectively just a set of straps for your arms plus a set of straps to go around the pods) it would be really handy for people (especially like myself) who might be going for a reasonable trek after riding somewhere and wish to carry their lunch or whatever on a short hike. If the strapping was long enough you'd be able to carry two pods or even more. I mean, I could probably design and make it myself, but it would be handy if Giant Loop made them with their knowledge and experience.

    • @GiantLoopMoto
      @GiantLoopMoto Před měsícem

      Hey there! Thanks for the suggestion and feedback. We designed our products to be as minimalist as possible to eliminate bulk and extra weight. Our rogue dry bag and tillamook have the straps to be used as backpacks, but our drypods are simply part of our saddlebags which we made "removable" to keep things clean and organized. Like you said, you could use one of our shoulder straps to hook the two pods and carry those on your shoulders on hikes. We will speak to R&D about this. It is a good idea and we will consider that in the next product development. Thank you!

    • @GiantLoopMoto
      @GiantLoopMoto Před měsícem

      For two up riding, we do not recommend Saddlebags as they typically sit on the passenger seat. We do have a saddlebag though that could be installed and still carry a passenger. Our Siskiyou has a flat velcro area which sits on the passenger seat. Pillion could still sit (uncomfortably) on the passenger seat and, with some extra padding added, you could probably manage to ride 2up. This would be a custom setup and we do not recommend it, regardless the fact that our Siskiyou have 70 Liters storage which is typically enough for 2 people, with the addition of a big dry bag at the back like our 48L Tillamook. We do recommend instead our RTW panniers, which have the biggest packing volume on the market (90L) and are perfect for 2 up riding.

    Just received mounts. My MotoTrekk panniers attached just like you did in video, pretty simple. My concern is the metal slots that the straps go through seem like they will potentially wear through the straps on a bumpy road. The mounting plate is thin and as such creates a narrow edge that the strap attaches to. The weighted bag bounces up and down(ever so slightly) in the slot creating a wear spot on the straps. (You can tighten, but impossible to completely lock it down). Putting the top straps through top slots and over rack also helps, but doesn't hold the pannier perfectly stationary, thus wearing on the strap. I may permanently mount like in your other video. Although harder to swap between my bikes. but seems like the safer way.

    • @GiantLoopMoto
      @GiantLoopMoto Před měsícem

      Hello Mark, there are many way to attach MotoTrekk to your rack, but for safety, as heavy loads and bumpy roads could generate some "wear and tear", we recommend to permanently secure the MotoTrekk to our Pannier Mounts. Good overview. Honestly, I think the security factor of hard boxes is overrated and overemphasized (and I do own a set, for extended highway touring). They all have fairly cheesy locks that are picked easily enough, but Mr. Thief is bringing a big pry-bar and popping the latches off anyway. I consider them secure _enough_ to walk away for lunch or a hike, but I don't ever leave stuff in them overnight. In fact, I leave the latches *open* at night because I don't want someone prying them open just to have a peek (and destroying them in the process). I recommend that practice if you leave luggage of any kind mounted on the bike. It's similar to the San Francisco strategy of leaving your trunk open, to avoid having your window smashed. Sad state of affairs, but what can you do but take reasonable precautions?

    • @GiantLoopMoto

    You don’t need sidecarrier for Honda XL Transalp 750 for Siskiyou panniers. You Even don’t need exhaust protection. Siskiyou fit perfect.😎👍

    Thanks about your videos, are vere instructive and is easier for me to decide what to buy. By now I am deciding between Mojavi and Mosko Reckless 10. Both are very good products and I'm not sure about what fits better for me. As I don't know directly any of them, all the info i have is internet and youtube. What are the points do you think Mojavi is better than Mosko R10? What do you think should be the reasons to buy Mojavi instead Mosko R10? I understand that this question is so direct, but please I want to find the best real points of each to decide and I'm not sure if I'm having all in mind. Thanks!

      Thanks for your question Alfredo. It is a plausible question too. The Mojavi weights only 1.4 kg, while Mosko weights 4.6lbs / 2kg. Construction wise there are less components on the Mojavi. The bags are narrower too. We focus on being streamline and lightweight. We cannot talk for Mosko, but we are usually the choice for performance and weight.

      @@GiantLoopMoto thanks! I bought the Mojavi and I’m very happy with it. I’m using it alone with tools and staff for day rides or for raids, and adding on the top a dry bag of 10 or 20 liters depending on the needings. I rode 700km of hard offroad past week and it didn’t move an inch. Thanks!

    So and American company that sells world wide, describes the sizing with a system only America uses, but uses metric to describe the holding capacity. 'Murica 😜

    Just curious about care after use. Should I rinse it out with water and hang to dry with the cap off or just leave the cap on, roll it up and store it. Which would be better to help preserve the inner bladder?

    • @GiantLoopMoto
      @GiantLoopMoto Před 2 měsíci

      There's little to be done to preserve the inner plastics. Just store the bag in a dry and cool place if not used. Wash the exterior fabric with water and let it dry before storing it. In case of any problem with the bag, you can always contact our customer service. all our products have limited lifetime warranty.

    You forgot a big some. You can attach things to the hard cases, extra fuel, tent.... not the case with soft luggage. The things you carry in hard cases is better protected, you are less likely to break your camera in hard luggage than in soft luggage. If you tip your bike over with soft luggage anything breakable will probably break.

      As someone who owns a nice set of aluminum panniers and various soft luggage, I have to respectfully disagree on all counts. You can *absolutely* strap extra stuff onto soft luggage. Every piece of soft M/C luggage I have used or seen has provisions for just that-whether MOLLE webbing, extra nylon loops, beavertail, or some combination thereof. If anything, soft bags are much more flexible in that regard. Given a couple sets of Rok straps and some creativity, the possibilities far exceed any sensible load. On the subject of fragile stuff: OK, so you put _that_ stuff in a fitted hard case, which you in turn surround with socks and tents and everything else that isn't at all fragile. You're probably doing that anyway...I assume you don't have your nice DSLR and lenses bouncing around inside your aluminum boxes...so what's the difference? For the record, I've crashed with my laptop and assorted electronics in a GL Great Basin, and it was all just fine. A neoprene sleeve and strategic placement of socks and underwear were plenty of protection.
