The Jungle Prada Site History Tour in St. Petersburg, Florida is an in-depth history tour featuring one of the best-preserved American Indian mounds in Florida. This cultural landmark is often recognized as the landing place of Panfilo de Narvaez and Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in the year 1528. The survivors of the Narvaez Expedition walked from the Jungle Prada Site all the way to the Pacific Ocean over 8 years! Our history tour reveals information about the Tocobaga people, who dominated Tampa Bay at the time the Spanish arrived, and explores some of the native plants they would have used in their everyday lives. Tickets are available on our website. There are more than 50 semi-wild peafowl that call the Jungle Prada Site home.
Who Was Pánfilo de Narváez? Part 2: Narváez in Mexico
In the year 1528 Spanish conquistador Pánfilo de Narváez landed at or near the Jungle Prada Site in St. Petersburg, Florida and began the first overland journey across what is now the United States. He made critical errors in judgement that resulted in his death a few months later, but who was Pánfilo de Narváez, actually? This is part 2 in a three part series that explores the red-bearded conquistador's past exploits and the events that led to him being named Adelantado of Florida by the king of Spain.
No contemporary drawings or paintings of Pánfilo de Narváez are known to have survived. Most images of depictions of him were created much later and are based on artistic interpretations rather than firsthand visual records from his lifetime. For this video I fed Bernal Diaz's contemporary physical description of Narváez into "Dall E" to create AI images of Narváez. Some of the AI images have inaccurate details and some are kind of funny. Many artists are upset that AI draws from actual artwork without attribution, but I hope they will forgive my use of it here considering the lack of historical images to provide visual aid to the viewer. I'm not sure how I feel about it personally, or if I will use AI in future videos, but I gave it a try.
The St. Petersburg Jungle Prada Site History Tour received "Best of the Best" recognition from Tripadvisor in 2023 and 2024. It is a 75-minute guided history tour of the likely Narváez landing place in Florida, which was the location of a Tocobaga Indian village when Narváez arrived. The tour features one of the best-preserved American Indian mounds in Florida, as well as information about the Tocobaga and the society. The tour also includes a private seaside garden and lots of peacocks! Reservations are required.

I also learned about Frank Hamilton Cushing, the eccentric but brilliant ethnologist who dis...

Who Was Pánfilo de Narváez? Part 1
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 4 lety
Pánfilo de Narváez landed near the Jungle Prada Site in St. Petersburg, Florida in the year 1528 with five ships, 450 men, and 42 horses. They came ashore at a Tocobaga village. Upon finding small amounts of gold and hearing about gold-bearing regions to the north from the native people, Narváez decided to part with his ships, taking 300 men and the 42 horses with him to find treasure and sendi...
Unfortunately much of ancient Florida history has been paved over or lost forever.
This was put together very well, keep putting the effort.
Love the incorporation of AI images in history videos!
Never understood with as well as the Caribbean islands had been mapped out and traveled, especially Cuba, by that time, that they would not have headed down to the Keys and then tried to raft out that way. Or even from Miami area as Bimini is a mere 57 miles then just a short distance to the main Bahamian islands that already had some colonies.
Totally awesome video! Thanks for your efforts! I live in the Redingtons and been wanting to come visit Jungle Prada. Been to the bar right next to it. 😉
Great video! The link to the Semtribe website no longer works
We went this past weekend ::: it was amazing ::: so grateful to be a native Floridian and visit this area.
Bring in the Northerners and the tourists that have ruined everything here in Florida

Wow! Great video!!!! Coontie bread! I took your tour and loved it! Will Be back
Thank you for this presentation! I love the rainbow river
Please remember Egmont Key is a national wildlife refuge set aside for beach nesting birds that nest in colonies each summer. The northern portion of the island is open to the public, the southern portion (including the beaches) are closed year round. Pets are not allowed on the island. Thank you for the nice video.
Awesome video!…so much history here in the Bay Area…also some of the artwork you used was painted by local historical artist like “Dean Quigley” glad to see his work in you documentary…keep up the hood work I’m subscribing 🤘🤔
Remember copper color people are the ancient gods and goddesses, the human beings are the Spanish and Europeans that’s pale and don’t have copper color the people that are foreign to the land or Native Americans and whites #danecalloway #rashadjamal
After focusing on the proper pronunciation of Narvaez you proceed to torture the pronunciation of his home town Valladolid (Vaya-do-lid). Otherwise muy interssante. I wondered about the Prada landing site in St Petersburg. Now I know….
But, you never snorkeling
The accent over the first syllable means to stress the first syllable -- Pan. You stressed the second syllable -- fi. Your pronunciation is inaccurate.

Wrong. NASA stopped counting at 25,000 islands in the 70’s
The actual number of islands varies depending on the source, but it's generally estimated to be in the hundreds. The exact count can be challenging to determine due to the dynamic nature of the islands. I couldn't find any NASA data online about how many islands they estimate. Could you provide a source or a link?
@@discoverfloridatours I could count 1,000 islands south of Rabbit key pass EASILY. I live on Chokoloskee island , southern portion of 10,000. You sir, have no idea.
ooo cool
The OG Florida Man
I went out with dj and capt and had a great time fishi g!
That climate change, it'll get you every time. I bet they tax there people to death, change there texts books to reflect there lies and never study the history of the world. Ya, i know how they felt.
It's always nice to learn about lesser known or extinct Amerindian people.
Egmont was my first duty station out of basic training. There were four of us in two two man duty sections working one week one and one week off. Transport was provided by CG helicopter. June 74-February 75. Good times. Now I volunteer through Egmont Key Alliance.
I grew up near here in the ‘50s and ‘60s and visited the island a few times. I remember the harbor pilots gave us lunch one time! I also remember their big radio.
It's certainly very odd. This does look like something we'd see out of ancient egypt, baring striking resemblences to Sekmet's depictions. This isn't the only cat-man statue we've found outside of Egypt either, nor is it the oldest. We found one in Germany known as the lion-man that dates back more than 30,000 years. Really makes one wonder about the Lyrans.
Thank you, Tocobaga Nation, for keeping Tampa Bay safe from yet another hurricane. Thank you for this video. Very informative! I live in St. Petersburg and i didn't know half of this! ❤
SNAKES AND ALIGATORS.

Lo bueno sería que también, lo pasen en español
These videos are great. You do such a wonderful job of making them clear, interesting and professional. This one should be part of each of the museum exhibits down in Marco Island. I worried hurricane Ian may have hurt the museum and the cat, but was relieved to find that the museum had no building damage.
I can tell you this they couldn't beat him so they joined them because my family the natives there mixed in with narvaiz surname dropped to de
