Quick Job On A Much Larger Homestead Renovation.
Back in the 1800s, a Western pioneer got this house for a mere $18 paperwork fee thanks to Abe Lincoln, who signed the 1862 Homestead Act. This house sat abandoned for the last 100 years, just waiting to rot away.
We are changing all that. We are halfway through a total rebuild of this little shack from history. It marks a moment in time for the common man--the farmer, miner, homesteader--who came West on the American frontier.
So let's spend a few minutes pounding old square nails & saving the original boards, so that we can reuse them & put them back on the rebuilt house. **Sneak-peak of the dry stone foundation we are laying and the progress we're making on the major house renovation project.

Episode 10, 1889 PROJECT. The Dry-Stacked Stone Episode. We are restoring a pioneer homestead cabin in rural Montana, and today we tackle building an historically inspired dry-stacked stone foundation. NO mortar! Beautiful! We did something similar, albeit on a much smaller scale, when we renovated our 1880's home. We did as much as we could to preserve the original trim, which in some rooms was over a foot tall, and used some old boards from inside a wall as trim around a new bulkhead.

Oh man what a treasure! Well done on saving a house from history. That’s wonderful you reused some of the boards from inside the walls-I bet they had a great patina. It’s tough to find a use for some of the beautiful old boards on Uncle Dan’s cabin, but we are saving it all-plan T.B.D. down the road. The really weathered pieces might just be art.

I'm maybe a bit over-excited at having been shouted out...but this is such a cool project, and these videos so well done, that I'm just going to enjoy it! I'm really happy to have stumbled on your channel near(ish) the beginning - I normally find this sort of series five years after it's finished. It's very engaging to know it's happening in real time. Honestly, while I appreciate the philosophical paradox, I'm in the camp that says Theseus's ship IS the same ship. Each new plank and beam is laid in the shadow and echo of the part it replaces, according to the logic of the original. Nations, families, and (as you point out) human bodies all do the same thing while retaining continuity. Though it does really underscore the transient nature of life. If Canadian prayers work in Montana, I'll be adding mine for a successful crop!

Man, you are just fantastic! Philosophical depth 🙌🏻 My mind is definitely ruminating on the whole larger question of a build like this... So we just had to shout you out 😄 I’m with you on the paradox-It is the same, in an overall sense, and yet of course some tangible loss is felt with every original piece or part that is replaced. Thanks for the prayers & thoughts from Canada! Sending you the same from Montana. 🌲🌲🌲 Wind and storms are headed our way, but I got the last stone laid Saturday-and then I rested on Sunday.

@@Montana_Ranch_Rescue there are different types of acids for dipping. Since we are dealing with oil and light rust, thanks to the oils, their weakest bath could have done it and with little to no damage to any nickel plating. Even if the plating were to be removed, it's really cheap to have those replated these days. Something else to consider is Laser Cleaning. Some interesting videos on that subject on CZcams. Since the practice of using Lasers is new to the general public, it does cost more, but it does very little to no damage to the product. I've used a Dry Ice Blower on engines during restoration projects, so I'm sure it would work on a stove. The cost to rent is cheaper than you would think and it also works on wood as it used to remove Black Mold from homes, etc

@@paulharvey1947 Cheers, man🙏 I appreciate the advice you gave and the alternatives. I would 100% do it the ways you suggested next time. Especially if I had to do more than one stove every ten years-I don’t mind scrubbing by hand, but you are right to work smarter not harder. It’s cool to hear about better options out there. Thank you! 🙌🏻

Why is this so meditative? WHY do I ignore the messes in my own home to watch someone else clean messes!? Sigh. Yes, CZcams, turn autoplay on...

Any idea why there is a vent on the stovepipe? I found a Malleable warming oven, and am confused why one would want a vent in the chimney above the fire.

It’s a really good question 🤔 I know on the old Monarch stove I cooked with for 8 years, it had a vent like that. It really helped with “closing down the stove” and keeping it from pulling too much air. This helps stop the stove from getting too hot. But I bet someone else knows more about the concept than me. You’re gonna make me think about this until I figure it out! 😆😀

Wow, just a couple days ago I found a a Malleable warming oven being used as a deadman in a fallen down old chunk of fence. The nickel is all gone and the sheet metal is rusted out, but I’m confident I can restore it. The stove it goes with is in a hole not far from the same place, and in similar shape, but now I really want to go rescue it.

Oh man you should drag it out of there and see! How cool-pieces of history. Robbie’s uncle restored one completely and I’m pretty sure he replaced metal panels and even had all the nickel re-dipped. Crazy process, but the stove is amazing now! Keep me posted if you do it
