Bamboo Forests & Ramen on Fire in Kyoto
In this vlog we head out to Arashiyama in the Kyoto area.
We start off walking from the train station, through the Middle Gate, which opens up into a walkway that has several Buddhist temples as well as Shinto Shrines. At the end of this walkway you walk straight into the entrance of the Tenryu-ji temple grounds and the Songenchi Teien Gardens. We opted to pay and walk through the Gardens, which ended up giving us a backside view of the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
After exiting the gardens, we were immediately next to the main walkway through the Bamboo Forest that you see everywhere online. Unfortunately there are tons of people here, we walked through and kept walking down to the Katsura River. We enjoyed walking along the river and browsing the shops.
For Dinner we traveled a little ways back into Kyoto to Fire Ramen. Since we didn't really do research on what this place was, just saw that it had good reviews, we were surprised when they actually lit our ramen on fire...overall it was a good time!

I'm glad you enjoyed Japan! This is a great video, so please keep up the good work!
Thank you for the comment, we appreciate it! And we definitely loved Japan!
This deer video makes me wonder if dogs like humans only because we feed them
I always look at our dog and think this exact thing haha. If we could get a deer into our backyard and start feeding it, it would probably like us just as much.
Dude dont feel bad to say you love the aspects of splash. Racist or not it’s part of your childhood and your opinion. I miss brer rabbit dearly myself.
It definitely is a part of my childhood and nostalgic for me, it’s sad to see it gone from Disneyland for sure.
were the train stations hard to navigate? I am asking since I am currently planning a trip and the train stations seem so intimating, especially since I never used public transportation much before.
I would say that the only place we had a little bit of an issue would be in Tokyo, but only for the first few trips. The only reason for this is because in the larger stations there are so many metro lines, above ground lines and in for example Tokyo Station, also the Shinkansen. Having said that, the signage is great, and if you use Google Maps for your journeys you will quickly get used to how things work. Google Maps will tell you exactly what lines to use and even which car to get on for the quickest transfer. Don’t worry about it too much. Let me know if you have any other questions about it.
If u r visiting w/o a "JR pass" which is an all-u-can-eat for the JR system, get a "SUICA" card or a digital version of it on your smartphone. It's a debit card which enables you to simply walk through the public transportation gates (for buses, trains, also usable at vending machines & stores). Without it, you'll be forced to first manually figure out the fare then purchase the physical ticket each time you ride from point A to point B. With a SUICA, it's computed & deducted automatically. u can get the refund for the unused balance on SUICA at end of trip (Double check on this)
Thanks for this. Budapest is on my list. Which month were you there?
We were there in early October! It was perfect weather. Hope this helps :)
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope to go in Nov. and these tips are helpful. One thing to keep in mind, some otc medicines in the US are banned in Japan. For ex Sudafed.
Have fun! Let us know if you have any other questions about going for the first time.
You can't use Suica everywhere.
Should’ve clarified that we traveled to probably the most popular itinerary for first timers, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, with Nikko and Hiroshima added. No you can’t use it for everywhere in Japan but for these places we seemed to be mostly covered. Thanks for the comment!
@@RoamTwo its was the main reason why I carried cash or change to just pay for fair.
Guys, you visited Japan during the worst season. Rule#1. Never visit Japan during the summer (more specifically, starting at/after the "Tsuyu" monsoon season till the end of summer Sep). If you avoid Japan during these months, the weather should be mostly pleasant, if not good. I repeat. NEVER visit Japan between the beginning May - end September, which has the worst most miserable weather. This is the rule#1 for visiting Japan. - a Japan local
Thanks for your comment!
is end of October a good time that's when we are planning ?
Don't visit during golden week
@@zhanezar End of October is one of the best times. Depending on what you're used to it might be getting a little chilly though. But it's after typhoon season and before it gets too cold most places season so it's pretty ideal, especially if you're weak to spring pollen. Something to keep in mind though is that SUNSET IS VERY EARLY. In Tokyo it's before 5pm after the ~20th. They don't observe daylight saving and Tokyo is on the east side of a time zone. Depending on where you're coming from it might not be any different, but it is a downside compared to the other ideal times of April/May (with a less ideal time between April/May gumming it up) where the sunset will be 6pm-7pm. So you'll want to keep a fairly early schedule to keep on top of anything outdoor like parks and temples. Many will start having shortened hours of operation, but usually only from November 1.
Yeah, end of Oct is good. Hit Japan AFTER summer/Sep once temp starts cooling off & humidity wanes, but BEFORE the Holiday season when the airfare starts climbing. Beginning Oct - before Thanksgiving is optimal if you prefer cooler weather. If you like warmer climates, btwn end of winter & Tsuyu monsoon commencement is good (Early Mar-May b4 monsoon). Once the monsoon kicks in, forget Japan till the end of summer.
Great video, i was in 8106 back in Feb & really liked the spacious ocean view room as it was spacious & the big window was really good to have only thing was when out in the open ocean being at the front the room rocked quite a bit once sailing from sydney (luckily i don't get seasick), did yous by any chance notice a loud banging sound which happened close to every 30-40 minutes? Sounded like something massive possibly the anchor or something, at 1st it was quite annoying but eventually just got use to it but curious what it is though
We definitely rocked in our room as well, I guess that’s pretty normal for being at the front, but also the waves in that area are pretty crazy! Yes we did hear that sound! It’s funny you mention that because we got used to it as well, it almost became comforting haha. Thanks for commenting!

i liked how you spoke quietly!!
was in kyoto 2 months ago and i agree there were more foreigners than japanese people on the streets there. Still had a blast though as I'm sure you did too. For restaurants, I would look up google reviews and see if the reviews left were written in Japanese to sort of pin point spots that locals go to.
I’m glad you had a good time and we definitely did too. Thanks for the tip!
I think to prevent this kind of overtourism, it would be useful for Japan to start advocating their rural towns more. A lot of them are dying and while tourism isn't going to solve everything, it will at least keep them afloat. A lot of these unnoticed rural areas have a lot of stories to tell too!
I agree with this. Halfway through this trip we realized we shouldn’t have listened to the Reddit and CZcams “Best Japan Itineraries”. They end up just sending everyone to the exact same places, including restaurants! While I think there is a reason to at least see these places once, I think that were I to go back to Japan I would focus on the unnoticed rural areas as you mention. Thanks for commenting!
Except maybe for the school kids, Japanese people don't vacation in Kyoto. Foreigners outnumber the Japanese in Kyoto.
My wife and I are travelling to Japan mid August to early September - also for 3 weeks! We're very excited but are feeling overwhelmed planning everything. Any tips/recommendations? Did you guys book everything in advanced? Doing some research, they say that it is much cheaper to book while you're in Japan. Also, how are you guys getting around? We've heard the JRP is crazy overpriced now.
Hello! Sounds like a fun trip! Yes we did book most of what we could before we got to Japan. I do have some tips as far as travel goes. If you have more questions as far as lodging, or other things let me know. We have a lot of tips, it may be hard to relay them all over a comment but I can try! If you have an iPhone, get the Suica on your iPhone Wallet app. I believe there is also an android alternative to this. Don’t worry about getting the actual Suica app, inside the wallet just add a “transit” card and get the Suica. There’s a lot of confusion about this online about needing to pick this up. You can pay for all of your local travel, for vending machines and even many stores by using your Suica card in your phone wallet. For transit just tap in and out. It even includes the Disney train. Buy your Disney tickets in advance. You have to buy them online, you can’t show up and buy them at the park. For the Shinkansen, many people buy the tickets the day of which does work fine, but you do have to worry about the extra step of navigating to the ticket office. If you want to skip this step, make an account on smartEX. You’ll need a Japanese address for this, just use your hotel. From there you can buy individual Shinkansen tickets and don’t have to worry about getting a rail pass. I read that these can be a little more expensive than buying from the train station, but you can easily pick your time, seat and all can be done beforehand. Another nice thing is that you can link it to your Suica so that you can use that to go through the Shinkansen gate when you’re ready to take your trip from Tokyo to wherever else you’re headed on the Shinkansen. Let me know what else you need help with!

Lots of food for thought - thank you By the way, what time of year was your cruise? I’m thinking of this cruise and travelling from the UK, so want to try to minimise the risk of cancelled ports Thanks
Our cruise was in March. It does seem like luck of the draw unfortunately with the ports being canceled. Hopefully if you go you make it to all of them, or they find good alternatives like they did for us. Thanks for the comment
Quantum Class is poorly designed. Bigger ship but just more cabins with no changes to the sizes of pubs, clubs & bars. Everything is cramped. The food quality has also gone down the hill.

Hi! Where do you get those laces? They look different than the photo
I cut off the elastic ones that they come with, but they come with a pair of normal laces that you can put on instead.
Could you fit a couple 74cm long light stands in this?
Just measured this. You could probably force it but it would be a tight fit. If you have the option, take the light stand to a store that has one and try it. The 74cm measurement looks like it would work better diagonally than straight up and down in the bag.
Love this vlog!! totally agree when it rained while i was there in march it emptied out REAL quick. Glad you captured some of the donald duck festivities - it was still 40th anniversary while I was there. I just posted the vlog from my trip too 😀

Awesome video bro, helped me figure out my own optimal packing list!
Thanks for the comment, I’m glad it helped!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the ship! Very helpful to hear what Ovation is like before we get on her in a few weeks. I think the thing with RCL's Icon/Oasis/Ovation class ships (and all major mass-market cruise line ships, from what I can see) is that it requires a lot of planning and research in advance to get the most out of your experience. If you're thinking you'll just walk on with no prior knowledge like it's a small ship that only holds 1,000 people, you're going to be pretty disappointed - and I can see why you'd feel negatively towards the ship if you didn't know about these things in advance.
Thanks for the comment! I agree with you, knowing exactly what you’re going to experience beforehand and being happy with that will make your trip much better. Some of the things we mentioned, we had heard about beforehand, but were a little too optimistic that things would be different once we got on board! Have fun on your cruise! I think Ovation is starting Alaska cruising soon?
super helpful video! is this the aer travel pack 3 small or regular?
This is the regular!
Good info
How would you compare the material between the X- Pac and normal, non x-pac version ?
Can’t comment much on long term durability difference, both are holding up well. X-Pac has a slicker feel, shinier look and makes a little more noise(crinkling) when moving. It also seems to pick up dust on it more frequently. The ballistic nylon is almost the opposite of the described x-pac. It has a matte look and has a rougher texture. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Beautiful dog. Hi from a Brisbane born and bred old bloke.
Hello! Hope to make it there one day.
Thank you so much for this. I'm really considering this for EDC and as a carry on. I've been looking for a review like this and for some reason nobody else does it. One additional question, does it flatten out when empty? And over time has it become less stiff from when you first received it?
I wouldn’t say it goes flat. The padding on the back is pretty significant and the thickness of the materials make it somewhat thick even when empty. I think it has held its shape pretty well, it seems to be just about the same as when I bought it.
The table pulls out too.
thank you!!
