    Exile is amazing! I've also read Centralia digitally. I think the creator was only 18 when he started on the comic. I have to push up that on my to-buy list now, it's a great story . Both are Dutch comics btw. I hope LTL will continue to find more amazing stuff to publish. Moonray has been on my radar, so looking forward to your review/overview, maybe you push me over the edge to get it :) I don't like the idea of AI art at all, but at least they are fully transparent about it, then the reader can decide for themself. It would've been way worse if they tried to hide the fact in my opinion.

    I agree- as a FF reader from issue 5 ( first I found back in Jr High) I think November 66 thru April 67 was the highest run of Stan and Jack (issues 45 thru 52) with Spider-Man 30 thru 33 at the same time the highlight of Ditko’s run.

    The only two of those I own are the Miracleman and Silver Surfer omnis (in fact, I think the only other Marvel omnis that I own are the first two Stephen King Dark Tower collections). I'm much more of an indie reader, so it takes a lot to get me to read straight-up super hero books. I was pleasantly surprised with how genuine that love story is in the Slott/Allred (Allred was my main reason for picking it up) Silver Surfer. It was a sweet, wonderful book and I couldn't recommend it enough.

    You spend twenty minutes apologizing for words, images and intent of the creators. I just wrote a short story for my most recent book that took place on an American sub in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack and pulled no punches in language or intent of the "Japanese" soldiers. The story would be false to not say "Japs" or "nips" to represent the feelings (and actions) of the times and the outrage of the cowardly, backstabbing slaughter of our Navy while the whole time professing peaceful dialogue through diplomacy in Washington, D.C. through politics. Call them what they were at that moment and quit apologizing for living in the now. Hell, you even referred to the U.S. as being militaristic and warlike! Grow a pair.

      @@PatrolOfficer161 Wow… I feel like you missed my intent. I’m not apologizing for anyone. I’m not apologizing for their art. I’m explaining why Spielberg called it racist in his letter. Why people viewing this comic for the first time in 2024 might see it as racist. And then how it’s not racist and it was an intentional choice by the creators to depict the events in their truest form.

    I know it has the big red and white Marvel label on it, but I don't consider Miracleman a proper Marvel omnibus, but maybe that's just me. But it is amazing. Here's my top 10, at least this week. I also have the Taschen Spideys, so that would explain their absence. If Taschen ultimately produces an FF volume three, it will be the greatest collected edition in the history of collected editions. In no particular order: Slott/Allred SS - one of the greatest comics of the 21st century Doctor Strange vol One by Ditko and Lee - same for the 20th century The Golden Age of Simon & Kirby - the compete Captain America and every other pre-WWII S&K Marvel comics. Historically and artistically important, and just great comics. The stupidly titled The Thanos Wars: Infinity Origin - but it contains the complete Warlock and Captain Marvel 1970s cosmic runs by Jim Starlin. The Savage Sword of Conan vol One - Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith, and John Buscema Conan without the comics code. Crom. The Defenders, vol Two - Steve Gerber's complete 1970s batshit crazy Defenders run, the best Marvel Bronze Age team book. I said what I said. FF, vol Two - you covered this. Captain America by Kirby, 1970s run - I don't have a volume One, or it would surely make this list. Like you're holding out for a Dr. Strange Taschen, I am likewise holding out for a Cap. But this seventies Cap is bonkers in the best way possible, and it is truly amazing that The King had Cap runs in three different decades that are brilliant but completely different from each other. Man-Thing - I've always felt like Steve Gerber's weird-ass muck monster from the Nexus of All Realities is the true predecessor of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, even more so than that character's earlier run. The Book of Doom - a giant collection of Doctor Doom stories, what's not to love?

    I’m not american so the term great american novel is new to me. But the way i understand it, i think Days of Sand by Aimee de Jongh could be one such title. It is a great story that has its roots in real historical events. The book teaches about a specific time period that, at least in Europe, we never learn in school. And the art is fantastic throughout the whole book.

    Surprised to not see Doctor Strange by Steve Ditko on here. Personally feel like that was Ditko's best work and an all time Marvel run. My personal top 10 would be: 1. Fantastic Four by Lee & Kirby Vol. 2 2. Daredevil by Miller & Janson 3. Uncanny X-Men Vol. 3 4. Thor by Simonson (even despite the recoloring) 5. Doctor Strange Vol. 1 6. X-Statix 7. Punisher MAX by Ennis Vol. 1 8. Alpha Flight by John Byrne 9. Moon Knight Vol. 1 10. Sensational She-Hulk by John Byrne Honorable mentions: Master of Kung Fu Vol. 4 (for the glorious Gene Day artwork), Fantastic Four by Hickman Vol. 1, Miracleman, Howard the Duck, Iron Man by Michelinie & Layton Vol. 1, Thor Vol. 1, Incredible Hulk by PAD Vol. 1, New X-Men by Morrison

      The time this comic and movie were made, America was not at war with Japan. In 2024, we are not at war with Japan. So, in those contexts, it can viewed as racist. I was merely speaking about that and that the choice was intentional by the creators to accurately depict the mood from Americans at the time and explain why Spielberg called it racist in his letter. Ha! I have this comic and love the movie. And yeah, this comic is bonkers. Spielberg's letter got a genuine lol out of me. I don't see it as all that controversial. It was a different time. The bad guys were the bad guys and people apparently had thicker skins back when the movie was released.

    • @TaylorTalksComics
      @TaylorTalksComics Před 9 dny

      @@Bullitt3401 I can see it being controversial, just because the caricatures used for Japanese people were the racist propaganda pieces used in the ‘40s. This comic and movie were made 30+ years later “knowing better.” But, I think the use for those caricatures was INTENTIONAL. To depict how they were used in the ‘40s. So, on its surface, they used them in 1979, but the nuance is that it was an accurate portrayal of the time. Just one of those things that needs context and nuance.

      Yes, I understand that. That is why I explained why they used the racist caricatures and nomenclature. In 2024, or even 1979.... Those can be viewed as racist. But, they were depicted the climate of 1941. And accurately so.

    🙄That's a laugh that Spielberg called contents of the book racist when there are scenes in his movies that are intentionally racist. Example? When he took over Kubrick's film "A I " starring that kid from The Sixth Sense why did he have every other robot looking like a normal human yet he had the robot played by Chris Rock ( which is even more surprising that Rock even took the part) made up as the stereotypical Sambo. How did anyone miss that direct in your face bigotry? Oh but Spielberg did The Color Purple is the defense yeah because he got criticism for having ET non minority populated and why did he pick a story set in the MAGA past to feature an all African American story instead of developing a present or futuristic fresh idea? That's why I LOL when he condemned racist content in the book.

    When I was younger, 1941 (the movie) was on HBO all the time and I would sit and watch it every chance I could. I always saw it as a slapstick comedy making gun of jingoistic, racist American attitudes towards the Japanese, as well as war itself. Of course, I'll be the first to admit that I haven't seen it since my teenage years and I'm 57 now, so I'm not sure that I would have the same point of view about it now. I did pick up the comic adaptation maybe 25 years ago purely based on my nostalgic love of the movie, and their respective runs on titles like Swamp Thing, Maximortal, Brat Pack, Tyrant, etc., and although I remember being captivated by what Veitch and Bissette did on those pages, I don't remember being particularly impressed with the adaptation itself. I did see that Kayfabe interview you mentioned, so maybe I need to go back and reread it with my more current knowledge of the hardships they endured making it in mind.

      @@MrKlove01 It’s definitely a fun comic to visit from the creative and artistic stand point. As a story and reading experience, it’s not much. The best part there is seeing what they got “right” as far as adapting the movie in spite of the conditions they made the comic.
