This guys full of shit !
Just rewired a house because it was full of knob and tube, we opted to rewire rather than bury that old junk in insulation. Found tons of splices made into it outside of junction boxes, signs of overheat of the original wiring, greyed/blued copper brittle insulation. Glad it is gone now.
Virtually all original knob and tube Spices are outside of boxes. That's the only wiring where it's legal to have spices that aren't in a Box but they have to be done right with a Western Union spice. Likey what you saw that you think was "overheating" was where it was soddered .
@@frankpaya690 knob and tube spliced with romex outside of junction boxes, illegal to splice into knob and tube where I live. Previous owner installed 20 amp breakers on 14 gauge knob and tube, believe me when I tell you almost every sample of the stuff I took was overheated.
@@terryeffinp I never said you could Splice romex with knob & tube outside of a Junction Box. it was a mistake,, if 20 amp circuits was put on number 14 wire. Sounds like Thats from someone messing with the integrity of the existing knob and tube who didn't know what they were doing. That's not from the Integrity of the knob and tube itself, in its original form. Depending on the Ampridge on those number 14 wires they could get overheated , if you've got far above 15 amps on them. That has nothing to do with the integrity of the knob and tube system. What people used to do with plug fuses was sometimes put in larger fuses or even a penny, so that's like having no overcurrent protection.
@@frankpaya690 In my particular case it is a good thing we rewired the house, whoever it was that was working on it last was an ass. For instance one of the circuits was a 20 amp breaker, 12 gauge cable going from the main panel to the first junction where it turned into 14 gauge 80 year old knob and tube, it powered the living room outlets, the dining room outlets, two outlets upstairs, the living room lights, the porch lights, the dining room lights, the basement lights, and the furnace. Whoever installed the furnace (within the past 10 years) bonded the neutral and ground together inside the furnace. I found loose screws on outlets, shepherd hooks going the wrong direction, wire nuts that could be pulled off with almost zero effort, strip lengths that were to short/too long, push connect connectors that weren't fully seated, intermixed gauge wire sizes, to be quite frank it was a train wreck.
something should not fail just because it is old. fuses are just as safe as breakers, now i think we can all agree federal pacific needs to go, but knob and tube if in good shape and fuses are safe.
The problem is not just the knob and tube. The newer wiring was not properly installed to code. It is not supposed to be below the joists. The knob and tube wiring was probably a lot safer than what people added through the years.
Fuses are way less convient.
This guy is a quack. Fifteen hundred bucks to replace a water heater? Must be his brother is going to do the job. And it's a "water heater"... And as long as the knob and tube is sound it's okay... and so is the fused main (but you'd want to have grounded receptacles)
10-12yrs on a hw tank? And $1500? My parents are still using the same hw tank from when their house was built in 97’, and in my first house I just replaced a 20yr old tank with an AO smith for $700..
This guy is a complete dip shit!
As an electrician i cringe when I hear home inspectors, absolutely cringe at some of the nonsense that they say and "fail" on inspections or just absolutely miss all together due to the 10 hour course they took. a fused disconnect is not an "antiquated" system. They are still used in all kinds of electrical systems and are perfectly fine. They meet all nec requirements. They just arent typically used in homes now because they are expensive. A fused disconnect for a whole house would be more expensive than a new whole new house panel. For him to fail that is absolutely rediculous. People, get multiple home inspectors!
mike vanblaricom yea as long as people arent splicing and hacking up the knob n tube system it’s fine.. these inspectors put scare tactics into people.. long as nobody messed with it it’s fine.. and insurance is fine long as the knob n tube is below a certain percentage.. and not every house has updated panels.. that’s up to the home owner to change out the panel.. some of these inspectors are a$$es.. I paid $700 for an inspector on my 1820 house.. one thing these inspectors need to do but don’t on a home inspection is pull apart some switch boxes and outlets.. I hate home inspectors.. most are dolts..
Thank you. This guy couldn't even get his camera setup right. Many people only "know" what they've been told. It's not something they understand on their own. They're repeating back words & Viewpoints that they've been indoctrinated with, not any mechanical process usually that they understand the basics of.
Hot water heater ? I have a cold water heater.
Why would you want to heat hot water??
🤣
