Song of the Month, June 2024: Go On and Get It All Out
From Raymond Carver's story, Fever, in which a man gets a fever and then tells the whole of his life to the woman caring for his children.
Lyrics:
So she left you here
With the kids in tow
And ran off to California with that guy that you both know
And now you’re all alone
In this big old place
A house you never wanted full of photos of her face
It’s the face you see
When you kiss your kids
And tell them that you don’t know where their mother is
Or when she’s coming back
So you lie to them
And tell them soon and then return to reading brother’s grimm
It’s the fairy tales
That’ll break your heart
All that happy ever after and those mushy kissing parts
So when she calls you up
You can’t help but hope
That maybe it’s to tell you that she’s finally coming home
And a happy end
Is still in sight
All can be forgiven and everything made right
But instead of that
She’s just called to say
She’s worried that your aura has lately gone astray
So you roll your eyes
And hang up the phone
Immediately worried that you’ll always be alone
But there’s that girl from work
Who seems awfully sweet
Maybe you should call her up and she if she would meet
You make a life
The two of you
And the kids that you both have could find some shelter too
But as the sun goes down
And the daylights fades
The facts of life settle in and the dreaming slips away
And I’m here today
To take care of you
But I also have to tell you that I will be leaving soon
You see Jim and I
Are getting old
He turned sixty two last week and we’ve got children of our own
They’ve invited us
To live with them
So we’re driving that old pick up truck down to Oregon
And I sure feel bad
For leaving you
But your stronger than you were back then and I know you’ll make it through
You can go on, hon
Just keeping talking
Tell me what it’s all about
You got a fever
And I’m a believer
That if you go on and get it all out
You can go on, hon
You can go on

Song of the Month, May 2024, A Stranger Me
zhlédnutí 39Před 2 měsíci
I know it's June 1, but I finished it last night, okay? A Stranger Me I've not been sleeping well So I get up and drive Out into the night As if I just might Find something out there I thought it was age All this gray in my hair All these years that I wear But that's not quite fair I've done it all my life God bless a restless heart These days I wallow less Or at least I think I do That might n...

I am trying to stay present As a present to myself I'm boxing up my breath For the sake of mental health When the whirlwind of my worry Starts to send me out to sea I listen for the whisper Sounding deep inside of me Please don't be so hard on yourself You'll only be a failure If you fail to try at all That first step is important Even if you trip and fall The price of being born Is to never be...
Song of the Month, March 2024: Student's Wife

Three for three! This is a continuation of a project I started 15 years ago, turning Raymond Carver stories into songs. This comes from his story The Student's Wife, which can be found in his first collection, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?. There's also a Richard Ford reading of it at the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/books/audio/2012/dec/23/richard-ford-raymond-carver-wife

This is the February song. I took two separate voice memos from a year apart and worked them together and maybe you can tell, but I think all in all the thing came together pretty well.

Before We Know

I keep trying not to care About the things I cannot change But it remains my resolution every year And though I'm tired of being angry I'm still shouting myself hoarse Which of course makes it difficult to hear All the tick and all the tocks From all the hands on all the clocks And clangs of all the bells From all the time that always tells Me that the world is fading fast And the future will b...

November's demo? Maybe October's but late? Who knows. Yesterday afternoon I realized All of my favorite friends are gadflys Buzzing in my ear Asking why we're here While half of my head is philosophic The other side's staunchly catastrophic Running around town Shouting the blue skies down Saying the good old days were never good I heard a sermon preached on Thomas Said it wasn't the doubt that ...

I’d like to say I’m sorry in advance For all the mess I’ll leave you with from all my best laid plans I always thought I’d have the time Though counting minutes has never been a strength of mine Now you’ve got a basement full of things And a barn that’s part repaired and missing half a dozen beams Stuff you’ll never even use When all you ever wanted was time for me and you So burn the barn Set ...
Ambition

The latest single from The Ruralists. I got a fortune cookie that said, “Great ambition makes great men” and I thought, "Well, that’s not me and I don’t care." We live in a small town and have a small life and we’re happy to have it. Also, I had just watched the episode of The Good Place that ends with Kristen Bell at the bar asking, “What do we owe to each other?” a question that is surprising...

#TinyDeskContest2021 #TinyDeskContest Recorded live in Jake's bar under construction [SIDEBAR]. Our drummer was out of town, so we replaced him. Enjoy! Lyrics: If life's a joke I've always hoped the laugh behind it is divine And we've just misread the room And what's the point Was not the point at all it was too small And the laughter was the truth Is it a joke to be alive? Is it so serious to ...

Here is our entry for tiny desk 2020. Recorded live at our favorite music garage, the BackBack by G.F. Servis Jr. We had fun making it, as you can plainly see. And all my good intentions Filled with apprehension Never le...

Amazing! keep them coming
sounds awesome man 🔥
Two professors i'll never forget that taught me so much about life and how to think freely: 1. Luke Hawley 2. Jason Lief. graduated in 2015 and still think back on those lectures -- and I was a nursing major! So happy to see you continue your passion with music. This was bad ass!
This is amazing! I love the lyrics. I feel like I have been listening to a lot of your music lately. I feel like you put into words so much of what I feel and cannot always express. Thank you!
Codfish Hollow Barnstormers
We were there a little over a year ago! And we’d love to come back. Best stage I’ve ever been on. And such wonderful people!
That evening was pretty wild, from the green room to Maxwell's breakfast the next day. Stop by again even if your not booked.
Solid work gents :)
Nice!
Thumbs up from Tory (and me too)
this made me cry
Oh Marta! We miss you!
Thank you for the beautiful song.
This is a very compelling song for me.
Love from a fellow Iowan! Sounds beautiful. Also your red guitarist looks like Mike Birbiglia.
awesome song! we're in Michigan... kinda nearby. let's play together sometime
Absolutely! Let us know if you're coming to Iowa and we'll let you know when we make it out to Michigan!
Nicely... it is so fun to discover our fellow contestants in this great contest!
Just perusing some tiny desk entries, really loved this video! Looks like a ton of fun
It was a ton of fun! Thanks for checking it out.
