Bill's Model Builds
Germany
Registrace 28. 12. 2021
I build all kinds of models - Wood, Metal, plastic, in fact anything that keeps my hands and mind occupied. I'm no expert, but I have loads of experience in building (and in making mistakes) which i hope to document here, in the hope that others may see my mistakes and so avoid the same thing happening to them. I'm no spring chicken and have no idea , as yet, on how to video and edit for CZcams, but as a pensioner , I have plenty of time to learn (god willing). Currently in my locker I have a hanger full of RC aircraft, A 3 masted ship in 1/70 scale, a Mallorca tramcar, a London Bus and a Sopwith Camel

looking good. With all those eyebolts I'm imagining plenty of ropes
Thanks Greg, yeah, lots of ropes, and all left just loose, ie not looped or tied up. Interesting
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 that's certainly different
Bill, You were right, those little bits can certainly take away from bigger items. But as a hobby goes, we do not mind at all. Relaxation....
Hi Joe, it all adds to the final picture :)
Onward to the cannons! Nice, Bill!
Thanks Joe, I'm taking my time with these cannons, the parts are really small and I dont want them flying off the bench. 2 and a half hours for the first one and I still have the pulleys to do :(
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 Yikes! Slow and easy winds the race.
I totally agree. Each step DOES give us a new environment to discover. Great job, Bill!
Looking better with each step!
Great work as usual Bill. The way you seize the rope around the dead eye, is exactly the same way I seize big steel ropes for the mining and maritime industries ;) it works well at any scale.
Thanks Greg. I learned that method on the real thing too, but it was aircraft wiring looms :)
looking good! The bowsprit really adds to the length of the ship
Nice work Bill .Amazing how all the little details bring the ship to life. Did you put the netting on the rails before or after you added the rails to the deck?
Thanks Greg, Yes its amazing how it starts to look so much better. I put the nets on BEFORE I added the rail to the deck. On the pictorial they show the nets as being on the inside of the rail , but it didnt look right to me so I did them on the outside
@billsmodelbuilds5078 I agree . The way you have done it makes a lot more sense.
Very nice job
Danke Mario
Fantastic work as usual Bill. Just a suggestion. When cutting the lengths of wood at the beginning. Instead of using your square to mark it up all the way around you can get a mitre box for crafts and hobbies. With that you can cut perfect 90 deg and ever 45 deg angles. Much quicker. I got mine off Amazon.
Funny enough Greg, I have one of those, in fact I have several in different sizes :). I always forget I have them
Bill, always each video delivers more and more. I am enjoying watching your builds. Keep it up!
Thanks Joe
A fair bit of work involved in that but came out looking great!
Bill, looking great! There can be a lot of struggle to get these pieces to fit. File, glue, file again...
Looking great, Bill!
Thanks Joe
wow! doing it all from scratch. bloody good work sir. and i thought making airfix kits were hard at times : )
Thank You
Well done Bill. Glad your finding these problems before I get there ;)
Thanks Greg, You're welcome
Bill, looking great! Better with each passing day.
Thanks Joe
Nice work Bill
Thanks Greg
Looking great, Bill!
Thanks Joe
Looks awesome Bill. You will be seeing copper plates in your sleep
Copper plates and cannon ports, haha. I wonder what else has to come
@@billymo1907 I'm sure there will be something :P
@@GregWilson635 That is what scares me where it comes to building a ship of the line.
@@genojoe3176 No need to be scared, you just need patience (which my friends and family will tell you I have none of haha)
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 I have joined that club years ago! LOL
Bill, very nice! Your idea of the copper base was brilliant, especially to hide any tiny imperfections. I can see others using that idea going forward. I know I would.
Thanks Joe
Thats coming out really well Looks like it will take a while
It looks fantastic! Slow and steady wins the race.
Ouch! I haven't used tape on any of my builds yet, but I can imagine the time involved and not going stir-crazy!!! Good luck, sir!
Great work Bill ! the decorations and the shaped wood across the stern really make a huge impact to the look.
Thanks Greg
It's incredible how color and ornamentation can change the look of the ship. It's coming together so well!
Thank You
Bill, those scrapers are amazing! They really give you a professional appearance when used. That stern is looking great!
Thanks Joe. The scrapers take a lot of work sometimes, but i think the end effect is worth it
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 Oh yeah!
Very nice, Bill! It always comes down to the details...Keep it going!
Thanks Joe
The rear gallery looks awesome all lit up. Just curious , are you copper plating the lower hull?
Yes Greg, but I painted it first so any gaps will not be so noticeable. I plan to do it in short (ca 12 cm) strips
Bill, you're right. Without a good base coat you're fighting the tide.
Nice work Bill. They dont give you much room to get those stairs in next to those cannons. Santisima was indeed defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar. She came under concentrated attack by as many as 7 ships although she inflected heavy casualties to the British fleet she lost her mast and surrendered with over 200 dead. She was taken under tow by the Second rate ship Prince but was eventually scuttled northwest of Cadiz.
Thanks Greg. Where do you find such information? I'd love to read up on it
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 There is lots of information on the Internet. Just google the name of whatever ship you are interested in and there will be plenty of information to be found.
👍
Nice! Getting there!
Thank You
You got plenty done this week Bill. Really looking the part now :)
Thank You
Hi Bill, it's looking fantastic. As far as a closure for your hatches, I've seen that a lot of people use tiny magnets, which seem to work well. I am thinking about putting lights in my ship, Pegasus, could I ask the type of lights that you have used & where you purchased from? You are doing a great job & you have the patience of a Saint, unlike me! All the best Bill.
The LEDs are part of the lighting kit offered by Artesania Latina. You could use normal yellow LEDs, they just wouldnt flicker simulating candles Thanks for your suggestion re magnets - I have some left over from aero modelling and must have had a brain fart as I had completely forgotten about them (Y)
Nice, Bill! Each time it gets more and more brilliant!
Thank You
It’s really coming along you got a lot done
Thank You
The cannons look brilliant Bill. Very time consuming, but worth it.
Thanks Greg
Está quedando genial 👍
Muchas Gracias
Hi Bill, it is clear to see that it's the fine details that make thing stand out. Even though this is tedious work the end results are great!
Totally Agree, but with this cold/flu I currently have, all work on this ship has halted till I feel better, and can concentrate on those fine details
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 Number 1, get better...number 2, work on model.
I'm definitely going to have to wear my glasses when I get to this stage lol . Nice work as usual.
Thanks Greg - I use a magnifier for most of the small work (and I wear glasses all the time :) )
Still a treasure. Where are you? I'd love to see some of the items you have created.
I'm in Europe. One of these days I'll take some pictures of all my models and post them as a video
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 I'd like to see that also :)
Bill, that is an amazing amount of belaying pins! If that doesn't bother your eyes, you're too young. It looks like you have a typo in the video's title.
Thank you - Typo? I must be word blind
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 The name you posted for the ship in the title is "SMA Trinidad", a simple typo.
@@genojoe3176 thats no typo, thats the name of the ship, as it appears on the stern
@@billsmodelbuilds5078 Oops! I apologize.
@@genojoe3176 No problemo
Bill The audio is much better. Secondly next time, try using brown as a base then apply the copper paint it will give a deeper more lush tone of the copper paint. It sounds weird but after trying it myself I found the result satisfying
Thank You. The copper will eventually be covered by imitation rivetted plates, the paint is just there to disguise any cracks/gaps in the tape, but a good tip for the future,
Nice work Bill. Your certainly not making a fool of yourself. The audio is fine and I always look forward to your next video.
Thanks Greg - good to know
audio is clear
Thank You
Me gusta ver tus vídeos estás haciendo un buen trabajo gracias y adelante 👍
Muchas Gracias
No way are you making a fool out of yourself. As long as you're having fun, you are good to go!!!
Thank You. It continues to be fun, frustrating at times, and I have to watch my language :)
That laser level is really good. Think I shall have to get myself one of those ;)
Got mine on Amazon Greg - not too expensive
Very nice! I've seen that method of securing un upright more firmly with a nail with the head removed. Always looking for new ideas!
Nail for the smaller size wood (they're only 0.7mm) and 1mm brass rod for the thicker sticks
The railings came out well Bill. I really make things complicated when I do rails lol . I put the posts into that top rail and glue them in place. Then drill holes in the bottom of the posts and insert cut off nails in them. Then place them onto the deck with the pins going into matching holes in the deck. I have no faith in my gluing abilities and assume they will fall over one day :P
Thanks Greg. Yeah, if you look further down the pictorial instructions, thats what you do with the other smaller rails, using 1mm brass rod
