Transforming Pier 76:
Hudson Yards and its surrounding area are undergoing significant redevelopment, including new projects like the Hudson River Rail Tunnel, the High Line extension, and the second phase of Hudson Yards, which aim to better connect the waterfront with these developments.
The section of Hudson River Park from 29th to 44th Street faces challenges such as temporary pedestrian pathways, existing infrastructure like the helicopter pad, and underutilized piers, prompting the Hudson River Park Trust to seek redesign proposals.
Pier 76, with a history as a cargo terminal and tow pound, has been temporarily transformed into public space, with long-term redevelopment plans still under consideration, including a proposal to repurpose the SS United States as a hotel and museum docked at the pier.
Exploring Hell’s Kitchen Waterfront:
The Hudson River Park extends from 44th to 59th Street along the Hell's Kitchen waterfront, with the shoreline curved inward due to historical land reclamation for longer piers to accommodate large transatlantic ships.
Key piers in this section, like Piers 88, 90, and 92, have evolved from major passenger ship terminals to modern cruise ship facilities, with Pier 86 now housing the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
North of Pier 94, Clinton Cove and Pier 97 are being developed as green spaces, while Piers 98 and 99 remain in use by ConEd and the NYC Department of Sanitation, marking the park's northern boundary at 59th Street.
Wrapping Up Our Tour of Hudson River Park:
Hudson River Park's piers are categorized by their current use: green for parks and open spaces, orange for revenue-generating sites through leases and future mixed-use development, and gray for those managed by other city agencies, not currently part of the park.
Future Challenges:
Hudson River Park was significantly damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, highlighting the urgent need for flood protection, and the financial strain led to decisions like selling off unused development rights. In 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed a 12-foot floodwall between the West Side Highway and the Hudson River, but the plan faced public and political opposition, leading to its rejection by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The park's future development remains uncertain due to the lack of a comprehensive flood protection master plan and ongoing challenges related to climate change.

Really enjoyed the thourough and detailled tour of the High Line. It was, algong with Chelsea Market one of my fav spot in Manhattan when visiting. Onto the concept of the channel itself : Is the voiceover done by AI? It sounds super monotonous and could really use a more lively/human narrator imho. Keep up the good work tho!
