Video #15: Got GREEDY And Doubled Our House Size.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE. It went from modest to HOLY COW WHAT HAPPENED . . .
How to build a garage start to finish! The crew gets to work leveling out the base, then pouring the concrete. They even added in floor drains into the garage so any SNOW, RAIN or deer %$#*&% drains off and away quite quickly!
But the SIZE though . . . will it be BIGGER than our house?! Really, what WERE we thinking here?
This barndo is now a barn-OH . . .

Welcome to This Life We Live ( This 1 Life We Live ) formerly the WTFarm Girl channel.
Subscribe and follow along as we build our DREAM HOME after 10 long years of saving and waiting! It's a barndominium house plan with a shed style roof. It's a barndominium hybrid, so it's stick-built and on a basement because here in Michigan we get a LOT of tornadoes!
We'd LOVE to build it fully from the ground up, but sadly our local township only allowed us TWO YEARS to fully complete our home, so it's a race against time to try to get everything done BOTH with professional help AND on our own!
Building half of it on our own allows us a MASSIVE savings with our budget and makes this unique home design actually affordable!
We started with a low cost floor plan, to make this an affordable barndominium and learned how to save money on a house build.
We have some fantastic ways to save money on a new house and easy DIY home design tips!
This is going to be the coolest house on CZcams by the time it's complete!
If you have suggestions or ideas, we'd love to hear them!

    Not certain why you are spending time building the garage when the house doesn't have a roof and there is no tyvek covering the OSB walls? Wet weather is coming and I would have thought you would get the house enclosed before starting the garage.

Do they not want to see quality homes in their area other than trailer homes... or it is the typical old boys club where they are the only ones with the nice homes built in their little town that they control? Homes can be built within a certain time frame, but that does depend on weather conditions and also whether all products are available especially after Covid times, when factories were shut and these were and are still hard to get world wide. But good on you & Eric taking on your council and winning the battle 🙂 Now get back to work and film & edit them builders putting up more walls and the roof. 🙂nz*

      I think it's just being legalistic, and reading the laws as they were written for folks 75 years ago, back when you COULD probably build a whole house in 3 months AND they had lees requirements for how to do it ;) Now their "big fear" is someone RENTING the old house out . . . heaven forbid! And then everyone complains that farmers sell land to developers, but how ELSE are people going to find a place to live?

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive Před 8 dny

      I didn't realize that was a "thing" either until we went to apply for our building permit and they told us that because we had a house on the property already (a trailer) we couldn't put a new one there without a waiver, and that waiver was good for 3 months. SO, if our house burned DOWN and we HAD to build a new one, we'd STILL only get 3 months. BUT Joe a mile down the road can take as long as he wants to build on his vacant land . . . I don't know WHY they created that law, it's absurd. So we had to get a specialized waiver that set a NEW limit, and cost us $2500 for the permit instead of $300.

    no regulation on hay farmers, I often have to buy bales advertised as 70lbs bales, but are only about 40-45lbs, 11$ a bale. They won’t let you load your own hay bale by bale, they insist on putting them in the back of your truck with a grappler-so dishonest

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive Před 10 dny

      It can be that way anywhere. You go to the local butcher and don't weight your meat . . . they could be selling you a 3lb roast for the price of a 5lb roast. But with the hay, once they get one grapple load on your trailer, you can legally insist to touch it and pick it up. If you feel it's too light have them unload it back off. To be fair, hay DOES lose a decent amount of moisture once baled. I've baled 55lb bales that dry down to 45lbs, if its been sitting a while that's a possibility. It's also possible the first load they picked up did weight 75lbs, and they didn't realize the later loads did not. At the end of the day, you can go elsewhere. Our feedmill had baled a bunch of sticks and leaves, calling it hay, and charged $9 for each bale. I never went back there again.

      @@This1LifeWeLive very true, moisture content loss, but not half the weight they advertise, going somewhere else doesn’t address the problem unfortunately, it is more than one farmer; many have done this to me. Quality is a whole other topic like you address, there is a learning curve I have found with buying the right hay for my horses and sheep over the years. When I was a kid I never heard my parents complain about bad hay this way, not saying it didn’t happen but I don’t ever remember it. I have finally found a farmer that really takes pride in his product (will not be fooled by “stored right”, you can store shitty hay all day and winter long in a nice covered barn, it is still shitty hay) and “will load” (see above ha ha) again). It is very very difficult for me to get his bales up in my rafters, and I love that back-breaking work 😊

    interesting design, wonder what roof truss will be used.

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive Před 10 dny

      The roof is known as a "warm roof" (according to what I'm told), so there is no venting like a normal roof. This is going to use parallel cord trusses to maintain an even roofline front to back :) They look VERY similar to our floor trusses :D

    That size of house is only 2 bedroom. You will still have alot of unused space that you can't even use.

    • @This1LifeWeLive
      @This1LifeWeLive Před 10 dny

      No thing on the main floor has been framed in yet. The loft was framed in because it's 2 story, and that's how they are erected :) It WILL still be just two bedrooms on the main floor, but you'll see how it all plays out as it continues to take shape :)
