Why you should you film your dance practice
zhlédnutí 115Před 4 měsíci
When it comes to filming my practice, I didn't do it so consistently until I started this journey. So in a way I'm also pretty new to it, but that doesn't mean that I never did it. I think that before I would only film when I freestyled (danced freely/improvised) at the end of a practice or when it was time to perform. Like with everything we do, I believe that we will get the most out of it wh...

In a week I would feel that I didn’t necessarily have much to share and that not much had happened, but a month passed by quite quick and now there was perhaps too much to share in one video 😅 Regardless of how often I che...

As I’ve started to make that comparison, not only do I see a lot of resemblances but I’m also able to dive deeper i...

The changes might be small, but could have a big impact. And they are mostly related to the documentation rather than the physical practice. The videos and the content creation is what kicked off this journey towards self-actualisation in...

    great travel tips! I especially like how you mentioned being attentive and trying to adapt to your surroundings as a matter of respect. I'm a 5th generation Japanese-American and have traveled there quite a bit to reconnect with my roots and I always have an amazing time. I found that the dance community there is incredibly welcoming and dedicated to their craft. I had a memorable "all-night" session, similar to the battle you described in this video, from midnight to 5AM in Tokyo that showed me just how far I had to go in terms of dedication and work ethic. As a house dancer something I noticed that was different from the part of the US I'm from is that they put a much bigger emphasis on labelling things, I assume for the purpose of teaching. I was at a session that was led by a Locker who described their style as "Classic Campbellocking" and they asked what kind of House dance I do and I didn't know how to describe it in words or if there were really different "styles" of House dance that had different names. I'd been taught from multiple teachers around the US to seek my own approach to movement while still studying House dance fundamentals and the origins of different House traditions. I think about and reflect on my influences often but not in a way that could give a good answer to his question. At the time I thought maybe this is evidence that Japanese dancers are doing things in a bit of a "cookie cutter" approach, but over time I've changed my mind and come to respect this a lot. The desire to explain in words and be precise about how you talk about dance is not a bad thing and doesn't make you "inauthentic." Having to explain and label these things can be a great source of growth as you have to dig deeper and reflect more on what you are doing. As you said, there doesn't have to be a better or worse comparison, it's natural that different places would develop the style in new ways and along with that new ways of teaching and talking about it. That is hopefully what makes travelling fun for those of us lucky enough to live in an era where this dance is truly global!

      Thank you for your comment and thank you for sharing your experience! Dedication and work ethic were definitely two words that I took with me from my trip to Japan as well. I was always amazed to see people come straight from their regular jobs to go straight to a dance practice or event while probably being tired from a long day of work, to then still in put in hours into their craft before heading home to get some rest before doing it all over again the next day. It's true that Japan has a very codified way of sharing their information and, from a quick glance, giving a feeling of preserving the dance style as it was. I appreciate the way things are done in Japan and it is a different way than I am used to in Europe, which makes it very refreshing and opens up for interesting conversations about dance. Just like you mentioned. And where are you now in terms of explaining and being precise about how you talk about dance? If you would be asked the same question today, would you be able to give a better description? Do you have any other places in the world that have given you a different perspective on dance? Or any place you would like to visit because you think I could give you a different perspective?

    • @jkishibeats
      @jkishibeats Před měsícem

      @@kaide.leviathanflow I'm actually writing these comments on my way back from Texas for the Blueprint house dance festival, which felt like serendipitous timing to your upload! I think I can give a better description now with how I view my dance, but it's definitely a very personal blend of the influences/styles that I've incorporated with traditional NYC House steps/foundation.Not something I can sum up in a few words just yet. Things like popping and traditional Japanese folk dance that I was exposed to growing up have definitely inspired me, and a lot of that is wrapped up in how studying music and music production has affected my instincts while dancing. I might need to work more on condensing a description down, making it shorter and more to the point 😅 I started dancing and grew up on the west coast of the US, then relocated to the south and now moved back to the west side. Even though the US is one country, each region and city can have very different approaches and history with dance, I felt like in the south people focus a lot more on the overall energy and vibe of the dancer and don't always emphasize specific technique. Living there was a very refreshing experience because someone that doesn't have any "steps" but is willing to be more vulnerable and playful on the floor could dominate the club or smoke you in the cypher/battle. I think that type of energy is important to remember, because the most incredible dancers I've witnessed have all of these elements plus amazing technical skill and refined foundation. Also just a reminder that dance should be fun! When I traveled to New York for the first time it was amazing to see people who had been going to the same parties like Funk box or Shelter for years since in my specific town growing up on the west coast there wasn't a strong club culture (more of a battle/event-driven scene), it was really refreshing to witness that space that can serve so many purposes. This most recent trip to Texas was eye-opening to see so many people who are diving deep into the history of what African American dance culture is and where it comes from (Jazz, Lindy Hop, West African dance, etc.). We were also lucky to see some dancers from Mexico, and their skill-level was incredibly high and they had infectious energy in the battles and cyphers. I also experienced eye-opening moments when I travelled to Chicago for a Chicago footwork event, to see how the House Dance culture in the birthplace of House Music (at least in name) had branched off from what I witnessed in NYC, and elsewhere in the US. The way the music and dance evolved in that city is very different from Detroit and NYC, but they each play such an important role in creating House music and club culture, but it seems most people only associate with the NYC 'codified' steps in terms of dance. There's probably too many places that I'd like to visit, but when I was younger I briefly studied Flamenco music, so I've always wanted to visit and learn about the culture in Andalusia because the music and dance appear to be very closely linked. Thanks for the reply and I really appreciate your videos!

      @@kaide.leviathanflow exactly! Thank you for your wisdom! I have a question for you, I really like your house dancing. I think it’s super creative and fun, and I’ve noticed that in my journey as a house dancer the biggest thing I have a problem with is my arm control. it would be so cool to see a CZcams video purely on house arm control. And bodyweight transfer ideas and variations. That’s what I struggle with the most and I can’t find anything on Instagram or CZcams or Google to help me with this, I feel like no one talks about it but arms is so crucial. They have to be strong relaxed, but also groovy big and it’s just hard for me. Or any recommendation would be great (or a CZcams vid. 😂🥰)

      @@TheMovementMeditation Thank you so much for your kind words! Anytime anyone shows appreciation for my dance it makes me happy. That's a good idea! Yeah arms tend to fall very low on the practice list and they might be taken for granted. But I will definitely try to do a video where I can share some tips on how to work with arms and how to include them more within the dance. I don't know any videos either from the top of my head 😅 but a tip is to take inspiration from styles that do use a lot of arm movements, just as ways you can move/play with them while you practice house ... such as locking, waacking, popping, vouging, krumping etc... just looking at the frame of the use of arms if that makes sense 😇

    I`ve come to this stage where I have opened so many new doors and the ways of moving feels endlessly. I have many goals I am right now but trying to set them more specifik and clearer with structure. The hardest thing is to find out where I should start sometimes, in order to find a clearer path when practicing. I always know when dancing that I am practicing automatically on many different things, but I don`t always know what I am doing in my head, but in my heart somehow. Right now I jus to start dancing based on the feeling I have, then trying to figure out what is happening in order to develop and adding. Sometimes I dont know whether I should start my practice more often, thinking of something as a element or just start moving by my feeling. I do both, but I want to find a clearer plan before practicing in order to dig deeper. I know it is very individually in what works best for different dancers, but do you have any tip? Your videos really helps my along the way to find more clarity. Thank you so much for sharing!! We dancers needs each others flavours and inspirations to grow as an dialogue like this, so keep publishing. It is really inspiring! :)

      @kaide.leviathanflow Před 4 měsíci

      First of all, thanks for leaving me this comment and for sharing your process! It makes me so happy whenever someone shares with me and also expresses that these videos are helpful in any way. I also have so many things that I want to do, improve and achieve, which is very overwhelming sometimes. However, with time I am also realising that my intuition (feeling) does have a way of guiding me through all of this. When I for example write down the different goals I have, if I sit with them for a bit (time is different per person, so take your time) then there are certain things I feel extra strong about. This in a way helps me to indirectly to organise my goals in a list of priority. Because even if there are a lot of things I want to do, my passion/ambition for them is different. And this can always change of course. But somewhere you know what you want to become really good at. When this priority is clear(er) then I try to take baby steps and create a little plan for myself on how I want to reach my goals. What need to be done? And how much am I able to do right now? Any step you take towards these goals is a step in the right direction, whether you practice every day or once a week. 3 hours per day or 30 min. Sometimes we just need to start and then your ambition will grow. I made another video about setting daily movement habits (link below). Have you tried that? Because that's something that really worked for me. Your feeling is guiding you and by creating a structure you will help to turn this feeling into intention, which is what you need for long-term practice. So that you don't just spend time practicing "randomly". That's what I believe :) I hope this is clear and that it helps. Let me know cause I am always open to continue this dialogue :) czcams.com/video/jLBWd4x2XjE/video.htmlsi=PT6l_i5AwPRZnrI1

      My guy! I'm happy that you feel motivated to do it again. And I feel you! But as long as we remind ourselves that nothing we do, has to ever be anything else than what it is. If we're practicing than that's what you will capture. A version of you that is always growing and looking to improve, hence why you're filming the session in the first place. What helped me is to remind myself each time I film, why I'm filming myself. That eases my mind.

I know the 'sharing is caring' segment is in progress but I just wanted to add to this by sharing something that may align with your practice. In connection to pilates and yoga practices, I've found that using workouts that incorporate (or solely use) the foam roller to be super creative and have definitely added some paprika to my practice haha! Folks I recommend are: Brian Spencer/ Well + Good, GoChlo Pilates and Pilates with Donna Finnie. They all have very unique approaches to ways we can use the foam roller as well as how they can be used as at-home reformer training! :) So yes, I just wanted to share those with you because I think that they're great forms of restorative/ resting practices that go hand in hand with other things we do in our practice :)

    • @kaide.leviathanflow
      @kaide.leviathanflow Před 8 měsíci

      Yes of course! Sorry for the late reply. Still getting a hang of CZcams. But the idea behind movement habits is very simple. Movement Habits are basically things that you want to work on that you believe will benefit what you are aiming to become very good at and to do so daily. It's a way to gradually start to tailor your personal (dance) practice after your needs. And it doesn't have to be a long session and in the beginning 10-15 min is enough, because the idea is that the habit should be carried out daily and in that way create a consistent practice. And this movement habit will organically, with time, develop and you will eventually want to add habits or tweak (duration/execution of) the chosen habits according the growth of your skills. I hope this gives an idea of the idea behind it. If not let me know.

    One of my habits/routines is to wake up early to train (running, pull-ups, push-ups, ...), but I don't feel like a slave to it. The reason is that I prioritise certain training above others. And when I prioritise the important exercises I don't feel like I don't have enough time to do my routines.

      @kaide.leviathanflow Před rokem

      My bro, I missed getting back to you. I apologise. How early do you get up in the mornings? I fully hear you on this one. I also have that as long as I get to my habits, then all other training is bonus. I guess when you have a purpose/goal with your practice then it's not "work" but just part of your day.

    • @warrend3159
      @warrend3159 Před rokem

      @Kaide no worries. It really depends on the season. As for now, I wake up around 6:30AM, just to avoid the heat and also because it's calm in the morning. Around the Fall/Winter period I'll start training around 7 AM. This also depends on whether I have morning lectures or work.

      Thanks Warren for the heads up. There are probably a lot of things to keep an eye out for when training with weights. It’s easy to get hyped and carried away by results you’ll see around you. In the video I mention that I would like to use it everyday but this is something I will most definitely have to adjust. Do you still use weighted vests/ankle weights or did you stop? What benefits did you notice?

    • @warrend3159
      @warrend3159 Před rokem

      @Kaide well, I still use them during my training. I try to train with them twice a week. As for duration, I train with weights on for 30-40 minutes so that I don't injure myself. I usually use them to warm myself up. After that, I take them off and carry on with my training. The benefits I noticed are the following: - overall endurance - strength -balance improvement (depending on training) - stronger legs (ankles) - a bit lighter on the feet - a bit quicker (timing)

  • @nathanielwestergren3424

    Really cool vid! 1. It’s important to me to practice things I want to learn but don’t like (I don’t like them cuss idk how to do them yet). For example I’m trying to get more into breaking to break up my habits on doing the same style over and over. And I set a timer or an amount of times I’d do a movement so that I have an end to it. Very important to have a goal or a finish line to move towards. And after that, do things or freestyle in a way I like so that my practice don’t become something I dread. A practice sandwich! Hide the “bad” with the good. And soon enough i might be good enough on the bad part and don’t see it as bad anymore. Then I can move on to the next movement. 2. Every weekday. With flexibility for obstacles. Saturday is for active rehab. Like yoga or rolling out my muscles. And Sunday is for static rehab, like sleeping or going to the sauna. 3. If possible I don’t put an end time on my practice. If I don’t have work or something. My practice is very submissive to my mental and physical well-being. Sometimes I can practice for hours thanx to my sandwich method. I just keep re-using it cuss I never end on a bad note. And sometimes I only practice for 30 min because that’s what my brain was susceptible to that day. Outside of dance practice it’s very important to practice flexibility and strength every weekday. So that I’m flexible enough to be in my biggest forms and also strong enough to be stable in it❤

    • @kaide.leviathanflow
      @kaide.leviathanflow Před rokem

      1. 100%! To have a goal with your practice is essential for the long-term practice and especially if it’s something that you don’t necessarily love doing, but know that it’s good for your growth. Kind of like eating your vegetables, when you’re not a big fan of them haha. BUT it’s also worth checking if there is a different practice you could be doing that would give you similar results and that are also enjoyable. Because challenges are important but if we find pleasure in the these challenges, then we will increase the chances of “rapid growth”. But I do love the sandwich method :) 2. I could definitely add one or two rehab days in my practice. Thank you for reminding me. This will definitely be a note to self.
 3. It’s good that you are flexible with how long you practice, because it’s better to have a practice that is short but enlightening than spending hours practicing because you feel like you need to get the hours in. Going with the flow :) and the practice outside of dance is very important. That’s something I am going to cover in a future video. I fully agree that the body needs certain preparations in order to be able to execute the things that we’re practicing for. Thanks for sharing !! I look forward to hear more about your practice in the future and if you manage to like everything you practice :)

    I love this! Thank you for sharing. I’m getting inspired to take my own practice more seriously 🙏 I guess I’ll start with the questions 1. Checking in with music and myself, moment to moment. Also balancing control and surrender 2. I would love to practice a little bit every day (realistic would be 3 days a week) 3. 1hr if everyday, if not 3hrs

    • @kaide.leviathanflow
      @kaide.leviathanflow Před rokem

      Hey 👋🏽 I’m so happy that you found this useful 😊✨ 1. Music is definitely a good place to start your practice and feel where you’re at. And this is the balance that I myself also want to balance. I tend to lean into control a lot, so more surrendering on my side 🙌🏽 2. And a little bit everyday goes a long way even if you would practice something for 10 minutes everyday, it’s still practice. Especially if it’s given it’s fullest attention. But to have a full on practice session everyday has also been my ambition 😅 *but did not work 3. This sounds solid 💪🏽 And what holds you back from doing 1 hour every day?

    I see u👀!! Dope content bro, keep it going🫡 1. For me personally (at this moment) it’s being able to be aware of all the knowledge I gathered and use it in my dance without thinking about it too much.🙃 2. Depends on the short term/long term example you used. If it’s for a battle I’ll train dance max 3 times a week and if it’s long term I won’t put any pressure on it so it could be between 1 or 3 days a week. Talking about practicing dance! But next to that I train my body to be able to increase my skill level. 3. Until I start to lose power in my body🤣
