Children use a different part of their brain than adults do. Emotional thinking vs rational thinking.
It has to do with reactions occurring within the brain. Children make much slower less thought provoked action, like you said more emotional while adults have been trained to better take in stimuli and output a better more controlled reaction. Some studies on psychedelics show this is most likely why it helps some patients with depression. It allows their brains to function more on a quick short burst and basically rewrite how they react to stimuli. It’s pretty cool
Hi, quick question: how a player can learn at 14-15 yrs old the game? Does it comes only through games or does it existe some courses to improve your understanding of the game ?
As a non hockey parent, your vidéo helps me a lot!
We can see the kids where the parents are pushing, it shows up all the time.. skating slow in practices when the coach isnt watching.. not getting back in a game when theres a turnover.. and parents yelling " skate" .
So tell me, if a kid at 8 has the best individual skills, why are the aaa coaches talking about hockey iq at 8 years old? Isn't that a little early to be talking about that? And how can they really define hockey iq at 8 years old?
I've seen an 8 year old able to read plays pick off passes and make no look backdoor passes I would define that as hockey IQ at 8
@@hepples77 I'd define that as skill
@@TrentGustus agree to dis agree I guess
I don't say anything to my son.. he will wake me up early in the morning because he wants to go to stick n puck in the morning before school. 3 weeks after Tryouts end he's upset because he hasn't been to the arena in 16 days. The only time I ever bring it up to him is if I get a message asking if he wants some ice time and I let the decision to go or not up to him. I don't think he has ever once said no. His eyes light up.
My kid is the same...
It's like team MN at the brick tournament is basically the MN Blades AAA team. They have a "tryout" but it ends up being 3/4 + of them from that team. All of this extra stuff is just going to price out a lot of great athletes and might even lead to a massive decline in participation in youth hockey. This isn't just CA but also in the US
My ~10yr old goalie would be late for a few games due to having to go to the bathroom (nervous gut). As a parent, finding out now it was nerves (I can't believe I missed out on the signs).
Btw, I seriously love (manly way) you guys. The service you're providing to players (and parents is super great). I've always said that if my job was easy, and everything worked well, they wouldn't require me.
Scott Adams book, how to fail at almost everything and still win big. He wrote it kind of a message to his teen kids.
Unfortunately, U12AAA costing 10000$ makes it serious for most parents, it is what it is...
I just wanted to be a Kirk Maltby.
You jusrt wanted to Kirk his Maltby, didn't you...
ummmmm......what..??? get it together
Yup... it is. Hockey is expensive. The rest does not have to costs anything. Shoot pucks at home, work on your stick handling at home, watch NHL highlights to see where players are away from the puck, their tendencies, etc... Preparation: You have to put in the hard work but also be a student of the game.
Suggestions for your podcast. Speak more about girls hockey...and bring in some guests. Anyways some of these kids are just overworked and not having fun.
Does compete level help with a good coach who pushes them? I believe so. Some people put it solely on the kids' personal compete level. My kids do much better when I push them.
How do I learn positioning without the puck though
So.. on average, the puck is on your stick for 11 secs in a game. Are you telling me you don't know how to be in position the other 99% of the game??
If your coach isn't teaching this..I'd be surprise but watch NHL games closely. Watch how guys get open, how they defend (shooting lanes), how they support their teammates (second quick, F3) for starters.
@@user-md3ij9oc9q thanks man
Ok, who's teaching those skills to young players?
Its going to net with stick on ice, its stopping in front of net, its shoulder checking, its being in a support position, its finding dead ice, its protecting the puck, its understanding your responsibilities in all zones and all situations, its knowing how to play away from the puck, not puck watching, wtc..
Yes but you still need all those individual skills and you need that game iq
Great advice. Made this mistake myself!
Oops!! But yes i agree. You need everyone to win, not just 1 or 2 lines. (Yet another reason to not shorten bench in minor hockey)
Dude, I just know that the shittiest player in the NHL is better than most not in the NHL
Its ain't he's ability to play a system either. It's his size, his skating ability, his attention to details, and mostly his habits and anticipation.
Yup!! But the opposite is 100% true. If you're slow and if you have a terrible shot, you'll never be a pro.'
Reminds me of a story I heard about Tim Brown. Coach showed him films of him catching the ball and running for touchdowns. His teammate caught the ball and always got tackled. Coach said the difference was that he blocked for you.

It's called Pylonitis, and it is very contagious. Usually spread by parents living through their kids.

Finally someone is saying the quiet part out loud. Stations and small area games give you small ice vision when they are used as a tool to sell ice to people whose kids want to play a game, games require it to be played in space.
That’s why hockey is one of the least accessible sports. I wish there was a way to get more kids into it and grow the sport.
Put a bauer 4500 on 👍
It boils down to GAME SENSE… in every sport…. Jerry Rice ran a 5.7 40 which is slow but he if not the Greatest Receiver one of the top to ever play…
Facts
What's bad is that some skills coaches are also assistant coaches. Good luck making their team if you don't $ign up in $pring or $ummer to their camp, if you are super lucky enough to get invited. Goalies coaches are 155 to 225/hr. How many hours must I sign up for, to kiss the ring? You have to be a phenom to make the team (top6 F or a top3D). If you're in the "bottom half" and you don't get invited to the $ummer and $pring skills sessions? Welcome to AA, or lower. keep working hard, maybe you'll be good by u18 (where every kid who makes it is pretty good), if you haven't been jaded by the system. Silver spoon kids have to work hard to stay at that level, so they are usually good enough. Heard of a "elite" team where the coaches got to golf with the kids for "mentorship" opportunities. Just so happens at private golf courses where the silver spoon kids parents have memberships. Coaches don't make that kind of money. But, tell me that doesn't influence how they pick for the team. Of course that kid is good most of the time, but what about the glaringly obvious bad choices? Sometimes they make the team. Canadian (north american) hockey does have an access problem. U13 elite teams? 10k/ yr? Come on. Half the kids I knew who made juniors parents wouldn't of been able to afford that back in the day.
Yes, this can be a problem.
we have to figure out how to reign it back in and get out of the private ran organization and academy model and back to the community based association model. The only place I know that still does this and does it well is Minnesota. Hockey is still pretty affordable there. there are 0 in season AAA teams in the state. Everyone plays association hockey, the associations are non-profit and the rinks are city owned so ice time is affordable and most of the kids finish their careers playing High School hockey which is more or less free, just a student athlete fee which is for all sports for a given year and normally between $200-500/family.
Too many skilled guys played on the Pittsburgh Penguins power play last season. Result-one of the worst in the league.
That would be one factor, of many.
Eric, there are companies that sell VO2 measuring systems for like ~8k. Would that be something useful for your tech?
He'd love that. But $8k is steep.
The problem is, kids need more game play to be able to develop the intuition to be ahead of the play... there just isnt enough opportunities to play more... with kids being driven too and from school, there seems to be very little road hockey with their friends..our kid loves the practice and any game he can get in... so because skills training is more available thats what we end up with... ive thought about renting ice for invitational games, but where, its all really booked... kids want to play games more than anything else... i think development is a consequence of the time we're in, not a desire... in calgary, rarely is the weather cold enough to maintain outside rinks for any consistency.
Yes, this is why we focus on letting kids just play when they are young.
that is what I'm saying! the ODR is where the greats are made! As a mini-mite/mite coach we do station based practice but I try to incorporate a free play station and small area games as well as 3v3 scrimmages just to help get more of this. This last winter in St Paul Mn was awful the ODRs were open for a week, maybe 2. Hopefully this year is better
That's quite a decision for a kid to make. As they're developing they will find or be coached into a position that suits their skill set. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a race care driver. My passion was formed around dirt track racing. When I was 15 fate directed me towatds drag racing. I spent 30 years racing and at 72, still actively involved.
It’s absolutely “entitlement”, guys. It’s a “snowflake” mentality that has permeated society in which everyone is told from a young age that they’re great and if something isn’t going their way it’s the coach, the teacher’s fault, etc. I see players who could be brilliant players but they so convinced of their own brilliance and only know one way to play that they don’t believe anything anyone says because they can pull a Michigan at top speed or dangle someone who never really learned how to play the body properly. The arrogance and lack of attention to detail creates bad habits to the point of frustration. Run a “voluntary” chalk talk and see how many kids show up and they see those same kids - who were there in time to attend - don’t skate their routes and blow the zone, or fly by on shots, or or or … on and on.
A little extreme, but get your point.
I think you have problem seperating your work envirement from your free time friends group .
Sounds like it to me. Personal and professional life getting mixed up.
@@jackremming2653 also a very angry man , angry at himself propebly ,or maybe he got bullied when he was a child at school
Absolutely brilliant discussion. I was an assistant coach in a camp and the head coach pulled up a stat that said that in the Stanley Cup Final game 7 in which Colorado won the cup, Joe Sakic (arguably top 3 player in the world) was on the ice for 25+ minutes and had the puck on his stick for just over 2:00. That 5v5, power play, etc. As a coach now the number of times I see an elite skating/stick handling player take a bad angle shot with a teammate poised in front of the net is staggering. The selfish, head down, mindless play is a true epidemic. Who decided that it’s cool and smart to shoot from BEHIND THE NET, or (as coach said) to make every pass a sauce pass? Staggering. Great conversation!
Thank you!
Nothing is missing except money whoever thought it was a good idea to pay $50,00 for youth hockey and travel every weekend so you can’t work and make that money is a bad combo. So whoever thought it was a good idea should be banned from hockey forever
I think I'm looking at a clown right now.
I call them highlight players, cause they watch the three highlights of the week and think that’s how the game is played 😂
all you guys are saying is true but most kids are not smart enough or care enough to listen and do something about it
Absolutely agree, but the game is evolving and they are describing it perfectly. The kids need to adhere or lose out. A good coach helps a lot.
I am highlights! And i rule my beer league!!!!!!
Kids follow trends. That’s what they do, and that’s what we did when we were kids. The difference today is that they can literally be sitting on the bench watching skill highlights while we only got those on Sports Center or CBC wrap up shows. It’s not that they’re “not smart enough” it’s that the adults coaching and advising them aren’t compelling enough or diligent enough - and the governing bodies of hockey have decided to tip the balance heavily toward “skill acquisition” and away from “tactics and structure”. This is the major liability of “central planning” to a tee and it’s the result of “echo chamber” decision making by the people who believe themselves to the smartest people in the room.
Starts with the parents and coaches (or adults more generally) focusing on translating this message.
@@QuantumRadii I coach AAA kids and most of them are too skilled for the level of IQ they poses and have parents who will defend them even if they are wrong, most cant be helped because of this perfect cocktail of stupidity...
