      Strangely enough I have more success by letting the pond go through the natural cycle of succession by itself with minimal extra planting. I want to get this one native plant called water target, Brasenia Schreberi to grow in my pond, but idk where to buy it.

    Great video and very well presented. I even think this is the best one out there, for starting a mini pond without filter and fish. I am going to make a 75L pond that sits between the patio and veggie garden. I'm going to use a couple of edible plants as well like watercress and -mint. If all goes well maybe I'll even try to add Japanese rice fish next spring. Anyways, thanks a bunch!

    My problem is finding a barrel that is leak proof! I have tried a pond liner inside, but that seems to leak after a few weeks. I have even painted it with leak-proff spray paint, but still got the problem of finding another pair of hands to hold the liner folded, tightly to the side on a half barrel while I insert the staples from the gun! How about another video with all the problems you come across in real life, such as barrels that leak, where to get a helper to help hold the liner, how to measure a 2sq. metre square to mark out the size to fit the barrel and more?

    That spot looked so idyllic I'm surprised it didn't have a pond already! I'm turning a Belfast sink into a mini pond, and was wondering if there's a better period for it to receive the most sun? I'm south facing and was going to put it against one wall or the other to get more sun early or late

  • @WinchWen

    Ending up being a cesspit not a pond. Smell was horrible, plants either died or were dieing. Changed water frequently but to no avail. Maybe I should have lined. Mosquitoes or something similar appreciated the environment I created, hundreds of the blighters.

    Just to mention, whisky barrells give off a stench for 6 months minimum. This is their former life coming out the woodwork. It ruins the ater. Barrells are charred too and that black ash comes away and kills your plants and turns the gravel black permantely. Mentioning this as few others do and it helps people make an informed choice before they spend money on pond stuff that will die within 3 weeks and satin everything black.

    I did something similar last year, but had one or two issues, the main one being blanket weed. I have a powder solution to get rid of it, but just keeps coming back, swamping all the other plants and just looks a mess. I've even removed everything and started again, but same issue. Other problems - winds knocking high plants over (solved with bamboo canes holding pots in place), the metal rings outside have just corroded off, no idea how long it'll last), something eating the lily leaves, and pigeons eating any flower heads. These ponds are definitely not plug and play, they need a lot of maintenance unless I'm doing something wrong..?

    • @wwtorguk
      @wwtorguk Před měsícem

      Hi there, it sounds like you are doing everything right, any garden pond will need some maintenance. To tackle the blanket weed, try moving the pond to a shadier spot than it is currently in, and ensure no other excess nutrients are being left in, such as dead/rotting plant matter.

    Thank you... Really love all your videos. I'm under s native white oak canopy that is constantly dropping debris and fills any water with tannins, leaves etc. but Also have some underground water that may be more suited to enhance bog conditions. It really wants to fill up with noxious ranunculus so maybe i can get something else to take over... Anyway thanks for all the great ideas and supporting biodiversity.
