From completely buggered, clogged and rough, to fully restored and in perfect working order; a carburettor restoration with few trial and error sessions thrown in ! Many thanks to the very helpful ICOA chaps who helped me selflessly and repeatedly throughout the course of all this.

    Thanks for making the cool slide show, beautiful restoration. I bought a red 1976 GL1000 after I got out of the Army. Put a Vetter fairing on it, fantastic machine for the time. Now many years later I have a 2021 Goldwing Tour and it’s an amazing machine. Honda builds fine motorcycles.

    Hello, You have done a marvelous restoration. You did it right as it's supposed to be done. I'm a retired private pilot, A&P Mechanic w/ Inspection Authorization. I just said that to let you know I can truly appreciate a task properly and beautifully done by the book. I have model just like yours that I'm restoring. Studying the correct way and methods is the only way to proceed. In Aviation, we are taught to go by the book and have the proper information readily available. I'm sorry for writing too much, but this excites me. Your son will have a wonderful treasure to keep in the family. Thank you for sharing you project.

    My first Gold wing was the Yellow 1976 GL 1000 bought while in the Navy. Wish I had not sold it but had to at the time. Next was a 1981 GL1100 burgungy and had to give that back because of financial difficulties. Next was a 1986 GL 1200 wineberry. Rode that as main transportation to work for 11 years and about 18 years overall. Then moved to a COLD climate where it sat in a garage, so I sold it in 2004. Then I moved Back to a warmer climate in 2009 and bought a 1999 Valkyrie Interstate, black and red with Actually 8000 miles on it in 2010.. Really in mint condition. But even though it has Great Power it is a HEAVY bike and TOP HEAVY, hard to back up, especially in gravel, sand etc. Started missing my old 1986 GL1200 wishing I had never sold it. Then this Dec 2017 one popped up for sale! Same year, color and claiming to have only 15,485 miles. Yea right, more like 115,485 or 215,485 I told myself. We Goldwing riders all know about the older Goldwings odometers not having the 100,000 rollover number. But the guy selling (30 year Honda dealer) swore on his mother's grave. (Uh, huh, if only mom knew what your son is doing in your name) Anyway, I drove 1000 miles to pick it up in Minus (-8°) weather. Looked it over but did not ride it (weather). Started it. Sounded pretty good, a little rough but not much. I am at present tearing it down. The fairing, saddlebag, etc., are in incredibly MINT condition, as is the radiator. So outwardly IT does APPEAR to be maybe a 15,485 mile bike. But once I got its SKIN off and after test riding it I discovered, speedometer not working, cable broken completely in half near wheel about 2 inches up inside sheath from wheel hub and cracked screw holder. Easy fix, but guy claimed NO LEAKS AND EVERYTHING WORKS. (Honda DEALERS.....uh). Then front shocks were mush. Been there done that, no problem. Then oil leak at final drive going into drive shaft, uh oh! Completely obvious this was leaking as there were actually visible oil leaks at joint where shaft housing and final drive (real wheel) meet. By the way I have a dealer Check List saying All these things were OK. AND the whole thermostat system had several leaks at almost every gasket both at thermostate and the pipe o-rings. UH HUH, 15,485? Anyway I have torn the bike down and am ready to pull the engine. Took the carbs off though first to rebuild, was really easy. (Rebuilt the Valk carbs, easy, but a pain in the bohoncus getting those out and in!) So what's my point here besides my story. There is more, but first a Really BIG (Ed Sullivan) THANK YOU for your VIDEOS! I'll deal with the dealer and maybe we can negotiate a little refund. But also, if you know if there is a way to tell if a bike has 115,485 miles and not 15,485 that would really be helpful. So far everything I have found could be explained away as just old age, (maybe) and cold weather causing gaskets to shrink/expand etc., over time and lose their seals. I am not looking to sue, just want to know if there IS A WAY to verify that low engine milage. Wheel bearings were good as were rotors. Brakes had deteriorated boots but that could be expected. But in 22 years of owning my original with over 250,00 miles on it I never saw ANY LEAKS of what I am seeing now while breaking down this bike. It also seems to have a small/medium amount of corrosion in the areas that normally are protected from such. Its almost like someone put a new radiator and New Fairing, saddlebags, etc., on a bike that had higher milage to make it APPEAR like a low milage bike. I have never seen a fairing group of coverings so well preserved on ANY GOLDWING this old, they do indeed look Brand New! It is amazing! But then......any help of knowledge in ability to determine if engine is older such as 115,485 miles on it instead of 15,485 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks regardless if you can help, LOVE YOUR VIDEOS they have been a great help!

    I have the desire to travel long distances feeling the torque to the strength of this 1000-cylinder engine on the roads of my country. Fantastic, sad that in Brazil it was not sold in 1975 and 1976 (since it was the year that the government banned imports of motorcycles in Brazil).

    thank God for people like you , who would rather rebuild them than ride them, I cant imagine taking 10 years out of my life to do that,, its so amazing to me. good for you, it must cost a ridiculous ammount of money to do something like that, I have a couple of nice bikes, but nothing like that, I would be afraid to take them out on the road. I suppose there is a place where you would look at a bike and not ride it,,, Museums things like that, which this one would be a candidate for Im sure

    What an detailed restoration. While I can certainly appreciate such a thorough restoration with such attention to detail it would not be of interest to me. These bike though remarkable for their day have very little value even in good condition. This is exactly why I restored mine to what I refer to as a rider standard. Mechanically very good but mine cosmetically shows some definite patina and I'm good with that. I wouldn't spend the major cash and time to have a museum quality Goldwing restoration, just makes no sense for me. I wouldn't even want to ride it, there is freedom of use in a somewhat less than perfect machine.

    • @guglielmodicarlo4139
      @guglielmodicarlo4139 Před 7 lety

      I couldnt agree more, but thanks to people like this, we can always be reminded of what they were like brand new. I still do not understand why these bikes are so affordable to buy. maybe in 10 more years when there will be less of them around, Im in the middle of a "ridable restoration" and the donor bike was less than 500 bucks,, so as you said, I most certainly would not take 10 years out of my life to do that to a bike that even in Pristine condition will fetch what 5K. or maye 6K to someone who absolutely has to have one? If you look at the work this guy did, he must have a serious ammount of money in that, but for some peopleI guess its not about the money,,,,,,for me it is
