Johnny Cash 1960s: The Irish Songs | Original Recordings
In 1961 and 1962, Johnny Cash would go on to record two songs that tell a story of Ireland or of primary Irish background. I believe both of these songs come from some of Johnny's experiences. Forty Shades, from his '59 trip and Shamrock from his attempt to plant clover next to his house in California.
Setlist:
• (1962) Shamrock Doesn't Grow in California
• (1961) Forty Shades of Green
For later notes: Forty Shades and Big Battle were recorded on the same session in 1961.

I bet you guys thought I left you? This footage is to celebrate two special occasions in the month of March. The first being Johnny and June's marriage on March 1st, of 1968; and the second, being the release of "The Legend of Johnny Cash" this month on March 24th. Here is the poorly preserved footage of Johnny and June's performance of 'Jackson' for the CBC Special in 1968. This is as good as ...

In 2015, my family and I chartered a van and a guide from Wild Atlantic Way Tours in Galway, Ireland to tour Galway and the surroundung area. At one point the outstanding tour guide put a tape of Irish music on as he always did to get his customers in an Irish mood. After about 20 minutes, "Forty Shades of Green" played, sung by a female singer. I said I really like that song and the tour guide said "you'll never guess who wrote it." I told him it was Johnny Cash and the guide was flabergasted. He said that he'd had thousands of tourists and not one knew it was Cash. I then told him it was on an album fron 1963. He then said, I'll have you know I met the man." He told us of his being a swim coach when his team was staying at the same hotel as Cash in Dublin. I then told him of the many times I met Cash starting when I was a kid. He thought I was putting him on. Then he tells us that one of the swimmers complimented Cash on his black shirts. Cash left the restaurant and came back minutes later and the tour guide's big punch line was "and he gave the boy one of his black shirts." I said that Cash gave me one of his shirts, too. The Tour guide said "no he didn't, you're just trying to get me goat." By now we were all laughing big time. I showed him a photo of the shirt and the letter of authentication. After that, it was as though we were old friends and I had my best day in Ireland.

Are there any plans to release the performance at the Melody Mill in 1958? I’ve been looking for that one everywhere. Thanks !
We've been meaning to, but there's content we need to cover. We actually forgot about it when we needed something to post for 1958. We also need to withhold it for a little longer for certain reasons, but we may post a song or two there. We're trying to figure out if other performances were recorded before it was demolished in 64.
you missed Snow in his hair for the last song

Big river is a good song one of my favorites by Johnny cash
One thing I noticed w/ both “Ballad of a Teenage Queen” and “Seasons of My Heart”, neither is a studio recording, but rather from a TV appearance from around that time.
Wait what are you talking about?
@@TheLostArchives1 Probably the appearance on American Bandstand when he did "Teenage Queen" where he lip synced it.

He once said in an interview about what was his favourite song, he said it was this one 😎

Wow I love Bill's laugh really enjoying himself
" Boom - Chica - Boom " ------- Only two men could ever make that sound. One was the Great Luther Perkins and the other one was the Great Bob Wootton. Many have tried but never could get it right.

Thank you so much for posting all these recordings. Your account is full of treasures! In one of the pictures Johnny Cash was playing with Flatt and Scruggs; do you know of any recordings of them together? I know they're seen together on that video of "So Doggone Lonesome" but would love to hear them play together.
I don't believe any that are available. However, Johnny and June both appeared on the Flatt and Scruggs Show in the 60s, so it's quite possible they performed together on that appearance. It is archival footage tho and unreleased.
The magic of their performances were undeniable. RIP Johnny and June.

Great video. The CBC should release all Cash videos from the 60's. We Canadians own the CBC so we should be allowed to see them.
in his biography Carl Perkins said he did not like playing the Luther part because Luther most of thought there was only 4 strings on the guitar. As you hear Carl Perkins was a long way from being able to play the Luther part the same. It was a little later they ran into Bob Wootton when Carl Perkins was unable to make the date in Arkansas. (that night is on youtube where Bob Wootton first played). Bob Wootton improved the Luther Style as the years went on. Than after Cash past away Bob Wootton went out on the road as the Tennessee Three and actually started playing more like Luther as he sang the songs while he played. I ask Mr. Wootton about his playing after one of his shows and he said yes he did play a little less because he had to think about the words but he wanted that basic Luther/Cash sound to live on.
Hello, friend. Just wanna let you know that you've done some great work for a Johnny Cash fan like me, I've been watching your channel for around 2 years. Got one question, though, considering my favourite show of his being probably this one, at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964, I gotta ask - are you aware of any image recordings beside a piece of Don't Think Twice and I Walk The Line? I'm guessing the whole performance must've been recorded, but somebody's holding it. Around three years ago I've stumbled upon a complete, full HD recording of I Walk The Line, but it has been deleted from CZcams. I can see some pieces of it here, on your video. Thanks for all your work and let me know :)
I do believe there is a full recording of the show, though of course there's always the possibility that there is not. Either way, the footage itself, I believe is owned by the Newport Folk Festival association(or something among those lines). I personally have not sought after this footage, because If a documentary can't get their hands on this footage, what makes me think I can? I hope this helps, thank you loyal viewer.
Love to hear it start with Merle Haggard’s “I threw away the rose”
