Saying Goodbye to Dark Souls
So far in this year I've learned that I enjoy Elden Ring more than I thought I did, and that I enjoy Dark Souls less than I thought I did. Maybe someday I'll get to just play a FromSoft game and enjoy it exactly as much as I expect.
In truth, this video was hit pretty hard from me realizing half-way through production that the message was going to be entirely different than I'd planned. The working title here was 'Dark Souls is a Perfect Game', but this ended up being a story about outgrowing a thing you used to love. Coupled with the fact that I ended up being swamped with non-video work for the second half of this month, I'm really just content to have this one done. I hope you all enjoy.

Halo: Reach, and the Death of the Spartan

How many videos can this guy make on the Halo series without actually covering the main Halo games? Find out next time on Halo Wars. I have a growing love and appreciation for spin-offs and new perspectives, and Halo is truly ripe for choice when it comes to those styles of stories. Last year I covered ODST, and how it presents the perspective of what it means to be a Human in the Halo world. T...
How I Learned to Love Elden Ring

I've got kind of a weird relationship with Elden Ring; you guys mind if I talk about it for a minute or two? After 150 hours of Elden Ring, I was sad that I just couldn't see what everyone else saw in this game. So I started the process of making a video to discuss that, only for parts of Elden Ring to begin to click as I played the game past the 150 hour mark. So I made the call to do one fina...

I've put around 100 hours into Skyrim in the last year, casually popping in and out to just play around. Of course, I have another 400 hours or so across three different versions of the game, and no matter what I seem to do in any of them I always end up crouched, with a bow, in some shadowy corner, and today I want to figure out why. Republic Commando, and the greatest story in Star Wars

It's an older video game, but it checks out. Republic Commando is one of my very first games I ever played. It was virtually impossible for a child Thane to finish the game without cheat codes, and now that I'm an adult, with a fully functional adult brain, I just replayed it on the easiest difficulty. The bridge at Kachirho still has hands, hot damn. This video is to recognize Republic Command...

Melee combat is quite bad. No combos, special moves, parries or dodges. Magic has variety but switching spells is highly annoying with the left/right hand system. You cant just keybind spells on 1-9 keys and cast them by pressing the key. All thats left is archery.

What I find fascinating about each of your teammates deaths is that they're all ironic. Jorge, the most connected to Reach, dies in space and off the planet. Kat, the brains of the team, is sniped in the head. Emile, obsessed with clpse quarters and his knife, is stabbed in the back. And you, the character who was told to leave the lone wolf stuff behind, left as the last survivor forced to fight alone one last time after finally finding a team.

Understanding that "if we kill this man WE can take this bow and shoot arrows at people" is more akin to the ancient laws of TTRPGs. The slightly-less-ancient laws of video games (which include laws such as "no matter how flimsy a chest or door, if it's locked it's locked and breaking through it is likely impossible" and "red barrel go boom") actually states that if we kill this man, we may get his bow, a halberd, a magic wand he never used, a unique artifact, his panties or fuck all; only way to find out is to default cube him. If you're gonna talk about dark Soul's weapon variety as opposed to Skyrim, I'd like to add to your point that while they also played identically for the most part, as far as aesthetic variety is concerned, Morrowind leaves Skyrim in the dust. Morrowind was less than great in that regard, and Oblivion and Skyrim didn't really evolve from that. And if open world fantasy RPGs that play way differently are allowed as comparison, the game my mind went to while you were building up to Dark Souls was Dragon's Dogma, which I think is a 2012 game, so still very much the same era. That game more interesting melee than Skyrim at the same time as also more interesting ranged combat (tell me one thing Skyrim archery has to offer that compares to actually aiming at a cyclops' eye or tripping up an enemy from afar with leg shots before moving up close to it), an also ok magic system and giant enemy climbing straight out of Shadow of the Colossus. Although I'd still say that Dark Souls has better melee than DD.

I recently did the same thing as this playthrough, went through and played the game how it was supposed to be played, via dialogue and basic open world play. Guess what? first day found a weird ass tree I missed on my first run (where I only focused on building the most powerful build and number maxing), hit the tree, demi human explains where he's from, I go to where hes from, beat the boss. But then I noticed at the end, you could either go back to the start, or continue to through the tunnels. I explore the tunnels, not expecting much other then loot, but then I go come out of the cavern, on a island, that always though you had to do some late game content to get to. And it has a DRAGON CULTIST TEMPLE, which is the coolest thing I have ever discovered by happenstance.

The world and setting is brutal but it also captures the human element, everyone in universe knows the city is awful but hundreds of new people go to the city in droves everyday to try and achieve something, it's bad but it still pulls people in, and it's the same for the player, we know it's bad but it still pulls us in. Plus, as others have pointed out, if we're gonna live in a bad world then might as well enjoy the neon lights and mantis blares while we're at it.

Ah yes, Reach a game that coasts very heavily off its atmosphere alone with bkand characters and voice acting that gets praised to high heaven because of its stellar atmosphere. It's a shame. I want to like this game more, but the amount of pretentious "tHe PlAnEt Is A cHaRaCtEr" and the undeserved praise of Noble Team as well fleshed out characters (when their characters never extend past archetypes, other than Jorge) is frustrating. Ultimately, I wish this game's praise was toned down a bit. I think its good, but some people make it out to be a masterpiece and that's just not true at all.

On the topic of summons I feel like this needs to be put to rest: they are there for you as an assist. A crutch a tool. Your first playthrough of any souls title should be simply to see an ending. That's it. Summons are there to help you reach that goal ans should be used. The beauty of souls games however is that there are 300+ builds you can try not even counting theme builds (as you lightly tapped into as "bug"). Each of these builds makes the game fresh and new again and is a reason to try for subsequent runs. This is when you start expanding your toolset. No longer your goal just to see the ending credits but to experience something new! To get better to get stronger to run new concepts and thematic builds. This is when you start putting the summons away. To expand your proficiency and skill. This is when the games REALLY open up. 90% of the people who bemoan the use of summons probably haven't truly soloed ornatein and smough in das1 and should be ignored. The summons are there for a perfectly valid reason and purpose. Use them and then move on.
